Cannot Join/Create HomeGroup
I am having problems with the HomeGroup feature. It simply will not let me join or create a Homegroup. If I try and create the homegroup on this machine it refuses and simply states 'Cannot create a HomeGroup on this computer' All other aspects of networking and file sharing work fine. After running the HomeGroup troubleshooter it identifies the HomeGroup service as not running, but it cannot autofix or switch it on?

Hello DBakes,When you open administrative tools>Services, right click the 2 services pertaining to Homegroups and select properties and on the dependencies tab ensure that all of those other services are running as well. The Homegroup listener and manager have a large list of dependant services which will not allow Homegroup to run if they are disabled.

Hi SaMcp1123,Thanks for your suggestion however these services fail to start on the computer. When I attempt to enable the HomeGroup Listener service I get the error 'Windows could not start the HomeGroup Listener on Local Computer. For more information, review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service-specific error code - 2147023828'When I attempt to enable the HomeGroup Provider service I get the error 'Windows could not start the HomeGroup Provider service on Local Computer. Error 1068: The dependancy service or group failed to start'

When I attempt to enable the HomeGroup Provider service I get the error 'Windows could not start the HomeGroup Provider service on Local Computer. Error 1068: The dependancy service or group failed to start' Hello DBakes,This is what i was referring to in the properties for the homegroup services, on the dependencies tab is listed several other services. If those services aren't running then Homegroup Provider will not run. Both the provider and the listenerrequire almost the same dependant services. Are theDCOM and RPC services running?

Hi,I forgot to add that on my previous post, I went through each of the dependant serices, and each one, including DCOM and RPC is running

Are all the services set to run automatically?
June 15th, 2009 3:37pm

Yes. I've given up on this one. Besides I struggle to see the point in a Home network environment. I just have the folders/files I want to access shared and mapped like i always have done int he past.

Hey DBakes , I know it's a little late, but did you have the Windows Firewall service disabled? I created a Homegroup on another machine, and was able to join it with my laptop, but couldn't share any libraries and the Homegroup Listener service wouldn't start. I turned on the Firewall service (but still left the firewall off), and was able to turn on the Listener service; library sharing worked, too. Just a suggestion.

I had similar issues. During the Win 7 installation on my 1st machine I told Windows to set up a Homegroup. Then, when I installed Win 7 on a 2nd machine, I could see the Homegroup I had previously created on the 1st machine, and I was told I could join, but when I clicked 'Join' and input the correct password, it would not let me. So I quit fooling with it until I had completed the installation on both machines. I then went back to the Homegroup settings for each machine and chose 'Remove This Homegroup' (or some such option). Finally, I started the process over. I created a Homegroup on the 1st machine and then when I went to the 2nd machine I was able to join with no problem.

In the Network and Sharing Center, left pane, change advanced settings, have you turned on Network Discovery and File and Printer Sharing? Review the other settings applicable to your configuration and set appropriately. The problem with troubleshooting is that trouble shoots back.

Hello, I've got exactly the same problem, and I've tried everything described here. In advanced settings, I can turn the net work discovery on and save the new parameters. But when I come back to these parameters, the network discovery is off again. Any new ideas ? Thanks.

What started as a simple "Windows couldn't remove your computer from the homegroup " became a nightmare for me, but I finally figured it out. For those of you who couldn't start HomeGroup Listener and HomeGroup Provider service make sure these services are started and set to automatic: -Function Discovery Provider Host -Function Discovery Resource Publication (Enable in following order): -Peer Networking Identity Manager -Peer Name Resolution Protocol -Peer Networking Grouping If these services are disabled it may be the reason why you couldn't create a homegroup. I hope this helps.

I think we all need to assume at this point that those services are started and this is a much more insidious problem. Folks, if you do not know what you are doing, spare us the wasted time of checking services that are running. I have yet to hear anybody talk about possible problems which need to be corrected in the system registry. Whatever is wrong with this Homegroup I suggest you do it the old fashioned way: Set the folders you are willing to allow onto your home network by using the SHARE folder option. Share folders, share printers, scanners, and so on and to ____ with this home group!

I agree. I especially love the replies that ask us the obvious that is already stated. when i try to activate any of the Peer related except the identity(it is running), they still say error 1068? There is no way of fixing this?

Hmm, interesting, no response to this for 24 days. Why on earth would Microsoft introduce a new IP protocol (IPv6) and then require it to make homegroup functional? If i'm not mistaken, IPv4 creates IP addresses with 4 numbers, i.e. 155.191.234.5, and IPv6 creates IP addresses with 6 numbers, i.e. 155.187.245.98.190.1. The main reason for IPv6 is an eye toward the future, when there will be so many devices connected to the internet that there will need to be more available IP addresses than IPv4 offers (4,294,967,296 possible IP addresses if my math is correct). I can't imagine this will be necessary within the next 5 years. This is one of the most frustrating problems i've come across in about 20 years of PC support and repair, and homegroups are supposed to make home networking SIMPLER. Who was the software designer that said, "Hmm, we could use IPv4 as the basis for homegroups, and we know everyone with internet access will have no problems. OR, we could go with a recently introduced protocol that we already know has compatibility issues, and then make homegroups fail to function if users experience any of these issues. Let's go with the latter option!" Apologies for the sarcasm, but i'd really like to hear the reasoning behind this. More importantly, we'd all appreciate it if support engineers didn't abandon a thread when a solution hasn't been reached. Thank you.

I had to write to say thank you. My nightmare also ended due to the services information above. Can't say thanks enough. What I am left with is, why doesn't the troubleshooter check these services? Not that I think the troubleshooter is worth much, sometimes it helps, but checking these services seems so basic. Fortunately gorek figured out my problem after I tried, I think, every possible solution on the web since the creation of the universe. Also parallel universes. For those who it does not help please disregard what must be an irritatingly happy response. I would post all the things I tried but I didn't record them, I was just digging through the dumpster as fast as I could.
