Cannot Install SP1
I am trying to upgrade a Windows 7 Ultimate x64 to SP1, however the installation aborts at 19% with a 80073712 error. Tried various solutions suggested in the net and specifically: 1. Windows Update Readiness Tool, after executing it %SYSTEMROOT%\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log contains ================================= Checking System Update Readiness. Downloading and reinstalling Windows Update 4. Runnig Setup and Repair from Win 7 DVD-ROM, it recognises the Windows Partition as Windows 7 Ultimate Recovered, however when I try to run repair, it aborts with a message 'This version of System Recovery Options is not compatible with the version of Windows you are trying to repair...' But nothing helped, and still cannot install SP1. Additionally for a few months now, every time at boot a get a message of the type 'Please restart to complete updates', deleted reboot.xml from C:\Windows\winsxs but still the message appears. Is there anything that could be done, in order to restore Windows Update functionality and be able to install SP1, or only a clean install of Windows will help? Hi, About update error 80073712, please refer this KB: You receive error code "0x80073712" or the "Windows Features" dialog box is empty when you try to install updates or components in Windows 7 or in Windows Vista http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931712/en-us And about error message 'This version of System Recovery Options is not compatible with the version of Windows you are trying to repair...' This error may occur if you use the 32-bit version of the Windows 7 installation disc to run the Complete PC Restore program on a computer that is running the 64-bit version of Windows 7. By default, the 64-bit operating system is selected in the list of installed operating systems. To work around this behavior, on the Select operating system page, select the blank space in the list under the Windows Vista operating system, and then click Next. Hope that helps. Thanks for your replies. I have tried already disabling the antivirus and also using the standalone installer. The Windows Update terminates with message Code 80073712 Windows Update encountered an unknown error while standalone installer aborted with Installation was not succesful A system error prevented the service pack from installing. Please download and run the "Check for System Update Readiness'' tool at ... If the "Check for System Update Readiness'' tool doesn't fix the problem, visit the Microsoft website for more information Details And details responds with Error: ERROR_SXS_COMPONENT_STORE_CORRUPT(0x80073712) Managed to start In Place Repair with a downloaded Windows 7 x64 image (the original DVD-ROM seem to gets mixed up because it contains both x86 and x64, well done MS!) but it aborts every time in 0% at Gathering Settings after starting the upgrade, tried 2 times after closing all programs, disabling antivirus etc. So, it seems, I have tried all the solutions (Update Readiness tool, In Place upgrade, running standalone installer) usually suggested for this upgrade problem. The other solution suggested - System Restore is not practical because I dont know the exact date that this problem occured, surely many applications were installed in the meantime and its more practical to do a clean install. Hi, If in-place hang at 0%, the installation disk may be damaged or corrupted. You can use another Windows 7 image for test. In addition, for Windows 7 update issue, you can try to perform reset Windows Update Components: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 Hope that helps. Hi, thanks for your prompt reply. 1. I had already tried resetting Windows Update components, I tried again yesterday, no luck. 2. The DVD was downloaded yesterday from MS site, using Download Manager, which checks the image after download. Furthermore, I used a program to mount the image, so corrupt DVD media is not possible. Click Start=>type winver in the search box and select it from the program results. Which version of Windows is running? Has the Service Pack 1 already installed? Version 6.1 (build 7601)?

Sorry you couldn't get SP1 installed. Don't blame your ganked install and over-used activation key on a product that clearly does not present these issues for millions of users. Just select Service Pack 1 in Windows Update and it installs. (When you have a properly installed OS. legally activated and compatible hardware and software, that is.) I don't have any empathy for your baseless rant. Please use the "partner" label carefully.

Windows is running Version 6.1 (build 7600), and SP1 is not installed, the whole purpose is to manage to install it.

Hi, thanks for your kind support. However, after spending 3 hours uninstalling antivirus, clean booting and trying windows update, standalone sp1 install and in place repair, the result is null. In general, lost 3 days in trying to get Win 7 SP1 to install with no luck. It seems that Win 7 has a lot of faults in general, and these faults could not be repaired, even with MS tools, terrible waste of time. The only solution is to format and reinstall, but I am considering not installing Win 7 again, since it is proven not reliable and ill supported my MS. Sorry that I cannot follow in your path. But, what information lead you to this conclusion what I have a 'ganked install' and 'over used activation key', or that I don't have a 'properly installed OS', 'legally activated' and with 'compatible software and hardware' ? It's interesting, since 1 day ago you were asking if SP1 was installed, now you 'provide' information that not even MS can provide. To answer that once and for all, I am only using legally owned software, on MS certified hardware. I am working in IT since 1987, used MS and other companies products since then, working full time with VB since 1993, hold an MSc in Software Design and MCP certification and finally, earn 100% of my income from IT since then. So it seems that I have at least a 'minimum' of experience in installing and supporting software, don't you think? Furthermore, what are the tools provided in order to correct this 'ganked install', according to you? Did you suggest anything, and I didn't try it ? Should not be a method that really will fix such problems, without having to resort to a clean install ? Do you have any idea of the amount of work required in order to do a clean install and then install 20 application needed by an user, especially if the user is a busy Managing Director ? Do you have any idea, also, on the amount of damage this is doing to MS, beside what me or you will say? To be frank, I have seen too many cases of things going wrong, the most recent was in a training with a MS certified instructor, where all hell broke loose with W2008R2 and she couldn't fix without a clean install. If you think that MS or any other company, makes perfect software without any bugs or errors, what is the purpose of having 5-10 Windows Updates/Fixes every month? Everybody can make an error, especially people and software, even MS software is made by people. Its interesting also, from another point of view, since I thanked those that responded in this topic, including you, and complained about lack of official MS support. So, you and only you, seem to have a 'baseless rant' and 'empathy' against me. Please correct your manners against other people, if you don't want to help, is ok, if you disagree with my opinions is also perfectly ok, but its not ok at all, to make false accusations such as those you made against me.

Please try the following steps: Delete pending.xml from C:\windows\winsxs to do please follow the steps below : a- Open Command Prompt with elevation b- Type in takeown /f C:\Windows\winsxs\pending.xml c- to take ownership of the file Type in cacls C:\Windows\winsxs\pending.xml /G :F c- Type in del C:\Windows\winsxs\pending.xml d- reinstall Windows update agent with /wuforce parameter you can download the windows update agent from : http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe e-Try Windows Update If you were not able to delete pending.xml, please let me know, we can try other special tool. Hi, thanks for your kind, professional and precise reply. I tried to implement steps in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931712/en-us however, sfc returned no errors, while system restore was not an option in my case since do not have a record of when the problem occured, many needed applications were installed and as such I thought it will take much more time, than a clean install. It is very interesting the solution you propose, in order to reinstall windows update agent. I had tried to reinstall it before but without /wuforce paremeter. However, I am into this problem for 4 days, until yesterday had received no satisfactory answer, such as this you propose. All things suggested or found in the internet, I had tried with no luck, so yesterday I was forced, really forced, to reinstall Windows and I am now in the process of completing the applicaiton installation etc. So its not possible to try your solution, since the relevant hard disk was formatted.
