Can not share with Linux box (HD1000). Works with XP, but not Win7. Linux box can see the UPNP share though...
Hello all,I am trying to let my Roku HD1000 PhotoBridge access my Win7 box. I set it up the best I knew how and even found this post below and verified that the settings where the same (see below in italics).I even used regedit to change the value of\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem "NtfsDisableEncrytion to a value of "1" and still no joy...The HD1000 uses a version of RedHat if that helps and works like a charm with my XP box.The funny thing is that the HD1000/Photobridge can see the UPNP share from the Win7 boxs WMC (via WMP12). It can even open up the picture folder and view the pictures too.So inclosing, I am trying to most importantly find out how to share folders/files with theHD1000 from my Win7 box and as a bonus find out why the HD1000 can see the UPNP share from WMC (on the Win7 box) and can access and view pictures, but when it comes to music, it can only see the Music folder and eachroot folderthat has the albums music, but it can not see the files (or access them)in said folder. For example, ifI had a folder named Rush with all theRush albums in the"My Music" folder, it can see eachRush album, but when you openany ofthe album folders, you don't see any music files (either WMA or MP3).Note: On the XP box, all I need to do is enable the needed fodlers "Share" option under properties. Thanks for your time, Matt BurkhardThis process will make the network a little less secure but it works well because a password isnt used and everyone is allowed access. 1. First, know what the Computer name is and what Workgroup it belongs to. The Workgroup name needs to be the same on all PCs that are being networked; no matter the OS on each system. This is already setup, even if only by default, in the setup process while installing each OS. Verify what the Windows 7 computer and workgroup names are by going to Control Panel > System and Security > System > and read information under Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings (The third category down). If the names need to be changed go to Change settings in that category or Advanced System Settings in left pane. Then, Computer Name Tab > Change, type the Computer Name and Workgroup Name. > OK. Make the computer name meaningful to aid recognition. The computer should restart. 2. Second, adjust Win7 settings to allow for sharing with older OS on other networked systems. Now go to Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Change Advanced Sharing Settings (side panel). Make sure Network Discovery, File and Printer Sharing, and Public Folder Sharing are all set to on and Password Protected Sharing is set to off. Note: I recommend leaving Media sharing set to on and under Windows HomeGroup connections select Allow Windows HomeGroup to manage homegroup connections (recommended). 3. Third, choose which folders to share on the network and adjust properties to do so. Drag any folders to be shared to the Public folder. Or To share a specific Windows 7 folder or additional drives on the system, right-click it > Properties > Sharing Tab > Advanced Sharing > tick box for Share this folder > Apply > OK > Close. You only need to share the highest level folder, not every sub-folder. Two little people should appear on the icons of the folders that are shared. 4. Now, you MUST follow this step or the folders will not be shared despite previous steps followed!!! Because Password Protected Sharing turned off, the security permissions have to be changed on the folder(s) to allow Everyone access. Right-click the shared folder > Properties > Security Tab > Edit > Add and type Everyone (not the quotes) into the box and select OK. Tick the boxes next to the permissions you want to allow (e.g. Read or Write, etc.) then Apply > OK. Some messages may appear: An error occurred while applying This is not unusual and can be ignored by clicking Continue. 5. Windows firewall is normally set to allow file and printer sharing but if you have a third-party firewall make sure file and printer sharing are enabled so that each machine can talk to the other(s). Do not disable the Windows firewall if its the only one running. 6. To see or copy files, click the Windows Orb (Start) > Network and the computers/folders/files should appear. Use two windows to drag files from one PC to another.

Are you just unable to see the shares or are you able to see them and just can't access them?

Hi Adam, First off, thanks so much for your prompt responce and taking the time to help me. This is killing me since I skipped over Vista but want to upgrade to Win7 becasueI really like it! Also I am a die hard PhotoBridge (HD1000) fan and user and don't want to have to keep a XP box running if I don't have too and love the neat features of Win7's netowrking (like "play to"). To answer your question:No, I am unable to see any of the Win7 shares on the HD1000.However, I am able to see the WMC UPNP share if I enable "Share Media"Thanks again, Matt

Adam,Not sure what you are asking... On my XP boxes I have "use simple file sharing" enabled. Then I select the folder I want to share, right click, select propertiesand select share, then "share this folder on the network".On the Win7 it's not as straight forward (which some of that is me not beeing use to the OS yet), I changed to a "Home Network" (from public) then clicked "changed advanced sharing settings" and dumbed down the items as much as posiable. (under Home/work (current seting))Network discovery is ONFile and printsharing is ONPublic Folder Sharring is ONMedia Streaming is ONFile Sharing Connections is enable 40-56 bit encryrptionPasword ProtectSharing is OFFHomeGroup is set to "allow windows to manage"I suspected that the encryption was the issue and didn't see a choice for disable so I even used regedit to change the value of\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem "NtfsDisableEncrytion to a value of "1" and still no joy...I think I had this same issue with Vista and is why I ditched it from the get go, with being hard to use and not shaing easy, I only used Vista for a week or so and then went back to XP. Win7 however is nice (I know it's a lot like Vista (read Mojave Experement)but I like Win7 and want to use it. Also I have friends that want to use their HD1000's with Win7 too. Thanks again!

Is your Windows 7 machine in a homegroup right now?

Hello Adam, Sorry for the delay, life got in the way.... I did have it set for up for "HomeGroup" at first (by mistake) but it seems that "HomeGroup" only works for Win7 OS devices, correct? So then I turned/disassociated from the HomeGroup (it now says "ready to create" (under "Network Sharing Center"/"view your active networks")).Once again, thanks for your time! Matt
