Can not see other computers in domain
I'm unable to see any of the other computers in my domain. The network comes up configurred as a domain connection, and I can do remote desktop connections to other computers in the domain, but I can not see any of the other computers from window explorer. The other computers can see the window 7 box and access the shared files/printers but the window 7 box just shows a "residential gateway" which is the gateway out to the interent. I've hecked the adapter configuration and it has the network mapping and the file shares enabled. I'm logged in as a domain user and the computer is amember of the domain. So what have I missed in setting this box up?

Any of the following reasons can cause this issue: 1. Security programs, such as antivirus or firewall. 2. The computer connects to a incorrect DHCP server. 3. The network adapter driver is incompatible. You temporary disable the security programs. If the issue persists, access the website of the computer manufacturer to download the latest Windows 7 compatible network adapter driver. If the above suggestions do not help, please let us know if the Windows 7 computer can access other computers after you enter \\IPaddres in the Start Search box.Arthur Xie - MSFT

What OS is running on the DC and on the clients you can't see? What does this machine use as its DNS server? Bill

I've removed all security software and tried disabling the MS firewall with the same results. I've repplaced the anitviruss/spyware detection with MS security Essentials as I've noted in several other forums that people are having a lot of issues with non-MS software. One of the first things I've done was check the IP and DNS addresses to verify that they work. I've also pinged all machines using IP addresses and domain names succssfully. I also checked that the DNS server resolves the computer names correctly. One of the first things I did when installing Win 7 was replace the NIC with a new Netgear gig card that was stated as being win 7 compatible. I also had done the same on the DC box. The DNS server seems to be working ( i wouldn't have internet service without it), it's on the domain controller. The other reason I believe the DNS is working iis that the win 7 is logged into the domain. Yesterday I tweeked a bit with the GP entries(Local Computer Policy > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Local Policies > Security Options > Network access: Sharing and security model for local accounts: Classic – local users authenticate as themselves) and this mornig I can see the other machines from the win 7 win explorer but when I try to access them (any of them, except the win 7 box itself) I get an "error code 0x80070035 - the network path was not found". I run the diagnostics but it finds nothing wrong. I tried your suggested sewarch by IP address but it comes up blank (even though the machines are listed in the windows explorer, but the ping still works if I ping by computer name. Any more ideas? -LB -LB

The domain controller is a windows 2008 R2 Enterprise 64 bit box. It also runs the DNS controller. Based on my testing the DC and DNS seems to be working. The other macnines behave as expected, even the win 7box logs into the domain with no issues. As I've noted earlier I can ping everyone by name and IP address in both directions. My gut feeling is that it's some sort of permission or policy issue on the win 7 box but I can't find the right switch.\ -lb
