Can not longer share folders
Hello everyone,I installed Windows 7 as an upgrade from Windows Vista (I have way too many files to backup in order to do a clean install). For some reason, all my shared folders that I had on Vista are no longer accessible from other computer, or locally using my computer name (\\comp\Music). I've tried remaking all the shares, disabling firewalls, and changing all the networks to 'home' and 'work' which didn't solve the problem.Any ideas?

I have had this problem with XP before, its because your User account didnt carry over and technically you dont own those files and cannot access them. In Windows Explorer locate the folders, right click on the folder and goto Properties, click the Security Tab.Hit the Advanced button at the bottom, click the Owner Tab, now hit the Edit button. In this popup select your user account then at the bottom check the box that says "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects"In XP I would sometimes have to do it more then once to get it to switch over, and it could help to be on a fresh restart of the system.Good luck.

The owner is still set to me, and the account i use for sharing still has read & execute permissions.

And you cannot access them locally?

I can access them through W:\Videos, or W:\Chris\Music, but I can't access them through \\Chris-PC\Music, or \\Chris-PC\Videos from my own computer, or other computers. They do show up if I just go to \\Chris-PC\but if I try to go into any folders, it says it can't find it.

Oh, ok, well, I have a W7 laptop and a XP desktop, and am still trying to figure this out myself. I did manage to get my XPmachine to see the laptop again by going to Networks and Sharing Center, in the blue box to the left theres a text link forChange Advanced sharing settings, scroll to the bottom and you see a line:Public ------------------------------------ down arrowhit the down arrow to expand the public settings, I turned on network discovery and was able to see the laptop on the networkbut if I try to access the folder from the desktop it asks for a username/pass, have not figured out a way around that yet.

Ok man, reading in the advanced settings a bit more, what I did was enabled network discovery, turned on printer and files sharing, turned on network access can open, change, and create files, and turned off password protection. When sharing the folder it only let me add the Homegroup at first, so it would show up but I didnt have access, went back into permissions and was able to add guest, and now I have read/write access to the folder on the laptop.May not be the most secure setup but this will get you on the right track, maybe an expert can chime in and explain how to use the homegroup stuff.

My settings are the same, except I have password protected sharing turned on (I don't use homegroup). I've tried every combination of the settings, and have tried both home and public...

Have the same issue. Windows 7 shared drives (or even the computer name) cannot be seen from a Vista machine, SBS 2003 server, or WHS. The Windows 7 machine can see Vista shares but not access them. Accesses SBS shares fine. I cannot even open the Windows 7 shared drives from the computer I'm sharing from.

Sorry, but I accidentally proposed my previous post as an answer. This is my proposed answer: I just noticed that for whatever reason "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" was unchecked in the properties of my wireless network adapter settings. Turning that on makes the Windows 7 share visible on other computers, including my server. Let's see how long it lasts.

I do indeed have file and printer sharing enabled on my wireless, and wired.

Open explorer, right click on Network, chose properties, then click on chose home group and sharing options, then at bottom chose 'Change advanced sharing settings' then turn on Public sharing not just homegroup sharing. This may help. Cheers.

Shoot! I thought I had found something. For whatever reason it seemed to work when I had turned on the file and printer sharing, but I guess I need to test more thouroughly. Still wonder why it was turned off, I know I hadn't done it, at least not on purpose. Had hoped to contribute for once, rather than just posting questions. Ah, back to the drawing board! Really, this is a strange behaviour, and it seems as if there are quite a few people having trouble with this. I smell a bug of sorts...

Windows 7 has many new security enhancements that make it even stronger in the business world; but a bit more difficult for users at home like us. I had trouble sharing any folders/files/extra hard drives with my other PCs using older Windows versions. After turning on all my sharing attributes, I could see my other desktop and laptop on the network and they could see my desktop with Windows 7. However, even though they all recognized each other I still couldnt get access. One was running XP and we have Vista on the other. I could get into files on them from Win7, but they couldnt get into the desktop with Windows 7. I made a step by step post on my fix after hours of tinkering around. Maybe this fix would work for your trouble? Its pretty much exactly what Burr said but I tried hard to make it very easy to follow. Here is the link to my step by step: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itpronetworking/thread/033c418b-1096-4df7-bfad-fd3d431f3cd5 Id love to hear what your result is, if you try it, could you reply either way? Id love the feedback! Thanks!

Thanks for the reply, but unfortunately it didn't work. It still says that the network path cannot be found (although \\computer\ still is found, just not the folders in it)
