I had this in a Win7 inplace upgrade I did over Vista and it left the firewall slighly mangled. I had to install win7 over the top of itself to fix it.

I have the same problem with the 32 bit version.Updating has failed since february 16th.Haven't found a solution yet. However windows defendercan be updated 'manually' through the control panel. Select windows defender and go to the help options and chose check for updates.I hope a solution is found soon for the update problem though.

If it's the cryptic error that it's your firewall, and you only have the Vista firewall software "and" you did an inplace on top of Vista, a repair install may be the only fix. It's the only solution that worked for me and I tried resetting the software catalog, reregistering the dlls, etc.

I did a clean install on a machine dedicted to Win 7 alone. So it's not an upgrade. Before February 16th the update worked fine, I changed nothing to the configuration. And the date of February 16th comes along in quite a few posts on the net concerning the automatic updates.

Not sure if this is the same problem you guys are having but on my W7 installation I had the new AVG anti-virus and f'wall and that was causing me loads of problems with regards automatic updates, downloadsetc on W7. Switched AVG f'wall off and they all worked fine again. Just an idea.

Was this the free version of AVG? If so... I have that installed too. Never thought about turning it off.

HugDopey said: Was this the free version of AVG? If so... I have that installed too. Never thought about turning it off. It's the new AVG suite that was recommended when I installed W7 - it's a free trial version (not at home so can't get the version number). I disabled the AVG firewall, hit the windows update and they all came through. I then re-enabled the firewall after - even though I couldn't find any way of marking windows update as "safe" on AVG firewall settings, so there is a long termissue here.On another note the AVG free trial version period has since expired, I went to remove it last night (so I could get a proper free version of AVG installed) and the damn thing won't come off - it gives BSD half way through the uninstall time and time again... :-\

I can confirm that this error code was also occurring on a poster's system, Vista Ultimate x86, with Zone Alarm installed. Disabling ZA and enabling the native Windows firewall resolved the issue. MowGreen MVP Data Center Management - Update Services Consumer Security

Check the WindowsUpdate.log and see if the issue started occurring when the latest Version of the Windows Update Agent was attempting to install. Same issue here. I installed the AVG internet security package trial version 8.0.237 and it works fine. Updating windows7 is only possible when I stop the AVG firewall.Adding avgupd.exe to the executable-list does not solve this problem.regards, Gerard

Found out that I have error code 0x80072EE2. According to MShelp I have toadd the Windows Update websites to a firewall exceptions list:http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/dca75593-6b39-4563-ba62-35de98ea98ea1033.mspxAre these websites the same for Windows7? How can I add these to the exceptions list? Searched their websites, but did not find anything.regards, Gerard

If you use a different firewall, refer to the software publisher's help to see how to add these websites to your firewall exceptions list. "Resetting the native Win7 firewall to it's Default setting should [ note the word *should *] allow communication with the update servers. I'm not sure if adding the update URLs to Internet Explorer's Trusted sites has anything to do with Vista/Win7's updating mechanism but ... Method E here shows how and it's purportedly for Vista, so ... it should be the same in Win7.MowGreen MVP Data Center Management - Update Services Consumer Security

Hey Guys,I'm getting the same problem, when I look into my WindowsUpdate.Log its littered with....It keeps saying the "PROXY REQUEST" failed. I dont have a proxy server at all in my lan. its just a straight NAT lan. The router has no firewall software specifically for it. Because only static nat ports are open to permit access to my server but other than that, the rest of its dynamic. When the router sees a connection request from inside the lan, it holds the ports open but then when the connection is closed by the requesting machine, it shuts those ports back down. So it makes no sense.Any thoughts?2009-07-1403:33:48:216 948c60MiscWARNING: Send failed with hr = 80072f8f.2009-07-1403:33:48:216 948c60MiscWARNING: SendRequest failed with hr = 80072f8f.
