Can not change the network location of an unidentified network
I have a VPN setup on Windows 7 Home Premium, but Windows has classified it as an Unidentified Network and put it in the Public network category. Because it is a private network I want to relax the firewall settings on the VPN adapter but in the Network and Sharing Center I can't change it from Public network. The link is black and unresponsive. The wireless adapter works fine, it connects to the Internet and I can change it's Network location. The machine is a brand new Dell Inspiron 14 with Windows 7 Home Premium and the VPN is OpenVPN.

Hi, When does the network category show Unidentified Network? Does it occur when connecting to Internet via wired network adapter or Wireless network adapter? At this stage, I suggest you try the following steps to troubleshoot the issue. 1. Bypass the router and connect to cable modem directly via wired cable for a test. 2. Temporarily turn off firewall on the machine and disable all other network adapter in Device Manager. 3. Upgrade the NIC driver. Thanks, Novak

Having the same problem here using Cisco Anyconnect VPN client. The problem is that Windows treats the VPN interface and applies the public firewall profile on it, therefore blocking everything by default. I would rather not put in rules and apply them to the public profile. Isn't there a way to classify the VPN interface in Windows, to Domain or Private?? This issue is posted all over and no solutions have been found.
