Can not change Password in Windows 7
I have recently purchased a New PC, and Upgraded a Laptop to Windows 7. Attempting to put passwords onto my User name. Windows first says Passwords do not match, But they do!!! Then when retyped it says Can not change password. So what is going on? How can I fix it? These are just stand alone PC's nothing special except they are connected to our HomeGroup. Thank you for your help. I have tried everything I can find on the internet to no avail.

Does the account currently have a password? If not you must leave the current password field blank. And then type the new password into both the new password field and the retype new password field.

Hi Ray,You can try to enable Audit on the computer to monitor what happens on the computer. To do it:run GPEDIT.MSC,navigate to:Computer Configuration->Windows Settings->Security Settings->Local Policies->Audit PolicyPlease enable Audit account management. Then, please try to change password again. Please view related message in event log Windows Security section. Hope it helps.

Ray, Did you ever solve your problem? I had the same issue after upgrading to Windows 7 and fixed it by using GPEDIT to enable the Administrator account as it was disabled. At that point, I logged in as an alternate user, in my case "Frank" who is a member of the Administrator account, and was able to change Frank's password via the Control Panel.

THANK YOU!!! Spent hours trying to figure this out on my new PC as well. Was told I had to start over with Windows7 and lose everything. GPEDIT.MSC worked in 2 minutes.
