Can no longer connect to one computer in 6-system home network
The configuration of my home network is as follows: Home Network - WorkGroup ‘MSHOME’: Siemens Speedstream 4200 ADSL modem | Netgear MR814v3 Wireless/Ethernet Router @ 192.168.0.1 | | - Desktop @ 192.168.0.2 (“System”) | - Win XP Pro SP3; MS-6540; P4 3GHz; 2Gb RAM; SiS-900 based PCI | | - Laptop @ 192.168.0.3 (“Laptop”) | - Win XP Pro SP3; Acer TM230; Celeron 2GHz; 1Gb RAM; Realtek RTL8139/810x NIC | Netgear FS605v2 Ethernet switch | | - Desktop @ 192.168.0.5 (“Media”) | - Win XP Pro SP3; IBM830952A; Celeron 2.4GHz; 1Gb RAM; Intel PRO/100 VE NIC | SOHO SW8P Ethernet switch | | - Desktop @ 192.168.0.4 (“Win7”) | - Windows 7 Ultimate RC1; Acer J88M; P4 3GHz; 1Gb RAM; Broadcom NetXtreme NIC | | - Desktop @ 192.168.0.5 (“Foxconn”) | - Win XP Pro SP3; Foxconn SiS 661; Celeron 2.4GHz; 1Gb RAM; SiS-900 based PCI | | - Desktop @ 192.168.0.6 (“Rowena”) | - Win XP Home SP3; Via Tech P4M266-823X; P4 2.8GHz; 1Gb RAM; VIA Rhine II Given the stated IP’s are dynamically allocated by the Router, they actually vary depending on the order in which the various systems are powered up, but those shown are the normal setup. This network functioned in all respects without difficulty for some considerable time – access was possible to any system from any other system; a number of Remote Desktop Connections were established and functioned successfully, especially between “System”, “Media” and “Win7” whereby either of the first two could be operated from any of the three, while “Laptop” was also frequently used to run “Media” through this facility. But then late last week, without any warning or reported error, “Media” was no longer accessible from anywhere, either through the home network or Remote Desktop Connection. Since then, I have failed in every attempt to re-establish remote access to that system, including re-running the Home & Small Business Network Wizard on all XP-based systems; re-installing Remote Desktop Connection; and “ping”-verifying inter-system connectability, etc., etc., etc.! In the most recent set of attempts, every system successfully pings every other system and the DHCP server except “Media”, while “Media” successfully pings every other address including itself. “Media” can successfully access both the internet (as can every other system) and also every other system on the network. In other words, every computer can communicate outwardly, while all but “Media” will also accept inward communication. Running “ipconfig/all” on “Media” also reveals the node type as “Unknown”, so the potential registry corruption solution offered in the Vista forum is not applicable in this case. At this point, one word springs to mind – “HELP!”edited 6:33pm West Aust Standard Time 4th Feb '10Some further information in case anyone decides to be generous and offer me some help:All systems in the network are fully up-to-date with all the latest applicable Windows updates and hotfixes, as well as the latest drivers for all installed hardware.Attempting to contact "Media" from any of the other XP systems through the normal network processes results in a " \\Media is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of the server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found. " error message, while attempting to establish a Remore Desktop Connection gives a " This computer can't connect to the remote computer. " message. Trying to set up an RDC link from the Windows 7 system gives a very similar message to the XP one, and a simple network logon is met with " Windows cannot access \\Media. " and an error code 0x80070035.In desperation, today I hooked up another desktop to the network, this one running Ubuntu 9.10 Linux, and tried to connect from that only to be met with a message saying "Connection Failed - The shares list could not be retrieved from the server."And now comes the really confusing bit - while I still cannot access "Media" through either Windows or Linux Network processes nor Remote Desktop Connections, I CAN both access it and control it using TeamViewer 5 under Windows with no difficulty at all!
