Can a domain name also be the local machine name?
Windows 7 pro, member of a domain
In the local group policy editor, it says I can "Assign a default domain for logon". Can I use the local machine name qualify as the domain in this case?
I want the users of this pc to only enter a username and not be required to enter the domain name.

This setting does nothing with local computer name. If your computer is registered in domain
A.local
and there is another domain
B.local
then by default the computer would "work with" domain A.local
When you assing the second domain in GPO, then you will work with B.local
If your computer name is MYCOMP, then you can logon locally mycomp\username with local user account.
Default DNS registration will create FQDN MYCOMPUTER.A.local
Alternative FQDN in second doamin is MYCOMPUTER.B.local
Do not mix nebios name with FQDN.

Hi,
try via domain policy:
Computer config -> Admin templates -> System -> Logon -> Assign a default domain for logon
or
localy:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\DefaultDomainName
