Can Windows Defender co-exist with MS Security Essentials? With Defender had MsMpEng resourse problem.
My system resource were being used up by MsMPEng.exe When investigating, seemed that Windows Defender was problem. They co-exist on my windows XP pro computer but I'm going to uninstall Defender as I believe Security Essentials covers what Defender does. I couldn't find info confirming this on any Microsoft site, (not too surprising) but I did find this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Security_Essentials MSE replaces Windows Live OneCare (a subscription antivirus service) and Windows Defender, which only protects users from adware and spyware. Hopefully someone from Microsoft keeps an eye on the wiki to make sure it is accurate.

If you're using Microsoft Security Essentials, there's no need to use Windows Defender. You can turn that off and just let Microsoft Security Essentials handle things.Microsoft Security MVP, 2004 - 2009

If you're using Microsoft Security Essentials, there's no need to use Windows Defender. You can turn that off and just let Microsoft Security Essentials handle things. Microsoft Security MVP, 2004 - 2009 I tried to post to ask a question but for some reason I couldn't do that. I have a problem that you as moderator may be able to help me with,.I have an older XP. I did have Zone alarm but when they enhanced the program it proved to be too big for my comp to handle and I had to unload it.At this time I don't think I have any security coverage. I desperately need an antivirus/spyware program. I need a small but efficient one that is easy to understand,. I looked around on the net but not knowing exactly what I am doing I decided to come here for help. As you can tell I am not computer literate. I can type a letter and get into an art program but know nothing about the variou programs. Does microsoft have a good program that is small and understandable at the same time? I did come upon the 'Defender' program and installed that. Is is an antivirus/spyware program? I looked at the Security Essentials but it appears to be all updates and I think is to big for my comp. I don't really understand all of this so would really appreciate some help. Actually I don't even know where to go for the answer if you do reply. As a mod are you able to email me?I really need help with this. Thank you in advance and to anyone else that may read this and is able to give me some direction.

While waiting for a reply I reread this thread. I decided to take a chance on loading Security Essentials and I am happy I did. It is not a large program and my old comp works just fine. I also removed Defender.Thank you all for your above answers in this thread.

It's good to hear that your PC is running well.Microsoft Security MVP, 2004 - 2009

What about Software Explorer? I believe MSE doesn't have it. Plus, removing something from start-up using "msconfig" demands immediate restart no matter what was it.
