Can I restore a Windows Image Backup remotely?

I have a computer in which I have created a Windows image backup. I can access to this computer remotly thorugh a VPN, so I would like to know if there is any way to restore this image remotely, while I am connecting through my VPN.

In ohter words, I would like to know if I can restore a Windows image backup from Windows, without the need to restart the computer in rapair mode with the recovery disk.

Thank so much.

Hello ComptonAlvaro,

Do you mean you want to remotely restore the system by system image backup ?

Based on my knowledge, you cant restore the system by system image backup without restarting the computer.

You can restore the system by using system restore.

Hello, thanks for your reply.

I am using Windows 8.1.

When I say remotely I mean that I am not access to the computer in person, I can access thorugh a VPN or teamviewer for example, or any other remote Access way.

For example, when I want to check the disk with chkdsk if it is the c: partition, I am said that the partition is using and that the check it will be done in the next reboot.

I would like something like that. I create my image with the Windows image backup feature, then, when I need, I say to Windows that I want to restore this image, then, in the next reboot, the image is restored.

Thank so much.

You cannot because when the system reboots you would have no way to restore the VPN connection and complete it

Well, the VPN connection could be restored.

For example, I have configurated a OpenVPN connection, OpenVPN is started at startup. this configuration is in the image that I want to restore. If the computer is reboot after restoring the image, I could connect to the computer once starts again.

I know that I can do that because if I remotely I reboot the computer, after a few menutes, I can connect again. So the unique problem is that the image is not restored in the reboot and reboot again after the restoring process.

Hello ComptonAlvaro,

Do you mean that the you can remote desktop to a computer that can reboot with VPN connected?

When you want to use system image backup to restore the system, you cant use like remote desktop or third-party software like teamviewer to remote access to.

When you use system image backup to restore the image, you restart the Windows Recovery Environment.
For more information about Windows Recovery Environment, please take a look at the following article.

Well, I mean that I install Windows, install drivers, intall OpenVPN and set OpenVPN to start at start up. So I can reboot the computer and when the computer is ready, I can connect again to the computer, because OpenVPN has started.

If I create an image backup with this configuration, if I restore the image, OpenVPN starts at start up, so I can connect again remotly.

The problem is that I don't have any option in Windows to say that I want to restore an image backup at the next reboot, so I can't restore the image remotly, thruough my VPN. If I could do that, how OpenVPN starts at start up, I could connect again when the image was restored, beacuse OpenVPN is included in the image backup and configured to start at start up.

For example I can do that with scandisk. When I am connected to the computer through my VPN, I can set scandisk to be run in the next reboot, I can reboot the computer, the computer runs scandisk, and when it has finished I can connect again bacause OpenVPN starts at start up.

Can I do that this with image backup? I would like to know if I can do the same than with sacnadisk, but with image backup.

Thank you so much.
