Can I backup a 32 bit and a 64 bit windows 7 machine to the same external drive?
While I am aware that I can create multiple system images from different machines on the same external hard drive, I would like to know if I can mix 32 bit system images with 64 bit system images and have no issues restoring the machines to their original configuration. Thank you.

I haven't tried it, but if you're using an imaging program that supports both 32- and 64-bit systems, I see no reason why not. I image my XP and Windows 7 systems on the same external drive (although they are both 32-bit). I just use different folders to keep them straight since I use the image date as the name. Not trying to plug it, but I use Acronis True Image 2010's boot CD to do all my imaging, both creating and restoring. Using the "boot from CD" method, I would think that it doesn't care which version of the OS it is that it's backing up. SC Tom

Thanks for the recommendation Tom. I forgot to mention I am using the built in imaging software in windows 7 and organizing the files within the external hard drive causes the computer to not recognize the files therefor, organization of that kind will not work. I've been trying to avoid 3rd party software as I am pleased with the built in software as it accomplishes all that I need. To be honest, I doubt anything bad will happen when I mix the two, I just would hate to lose all the images I currently have. Thanks.

Again, it's just a guess, but if the image is created with 64-bit Win7, I doubt that Win7 32-bit would even attempt to restore it, and vice-versa. I could be wrong; I'm sure there must be SOMEbody who has done what you are asking :-) SC Tom

The restore program will only recognize the appropriate backups-so using the same drive should not be a problem-just begin a restore to test it, you can cancel before it runs. The problem will arise when the drive begins to fill up. The Win 7 backup program will complain or not back-up. It may want to delete older back-ups to make space. I have a test mule that I have created multiple complete PC backups for on a single removable drive. (Evaluate different OS and configs) When I want to restore, say Vista Ultx64, I boot to the installation dvd and point the restore process to the drive and it finds the appropriate image(s).

You can backup or image as many different os as you want to your external drive.
