Can't write to Win7 Ultimate x64 Share from Win2K Pro SP4
I have an ancient IBM Thinkpad (A21m!!) that came factory with Win98, which I eventually upgraded to Windows 2000 Professional (never messed with Windows ME). Now my wife uses it mostly for word processing in Office 2003, and is quite happy with it. The problem is, with only a 9.5 GB drive, there isn't much room to spare on the ancient IBM. Being the nice guy that I am, I had created shares on my desktop PC, which at the time was also running 2000 Pro. Having upgraded my desktop several times over the years, the shares went through several installations of Windows 2000, then Windows XP, and now Windows 7. The problem is, after I (finally) went from XP to Windows 7, I had to do a clean install since you can't upgrade directly from XP to 7 (I avoided Vista like a plague because of all the complaints from fellow IT people at work) and had to recreate the old Share. Having completed the transition to Windows 7 Ultimate (x64), I find that the Win2K laptop is unable to WRITE to the share. I'm able to map the "new" share (kept on it's own physical drive) to it's traditional home of Z:\ on the laptop, set Windows 7 to use account-based sharing, and gave my wife her own desktop account with the same name and password as her laptop, and files can be read and opened, but not saved, written over, deleted, or renamed. Some files can be created new, but Word 2003 is not able to save and generates an error: "Windows delayed write failed: Windows was unable to save all the data for the file \Device\LanmanRedirector\Win7Server\Anyas_Docs\~WRD0037.tmp. The data has been lost. This may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere." I even went so far as to tweak the security policy to allow for older clients (RegEdited HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa and set LmCompatibilityLevel to 1). I've checked the physical disk and it is without defect and bad sectors. I've given her local account complete and total and absolutely unrestricted access to that drive and it didn't help. I can right-click in there from an explorer window and create a new .TXT and edit and save in Notepad, but Word will not save new or save over an existing document. Does anybody have any ideas? This is becoming a serious pain in my crack! Is it possible the problem is on the Win2K laptop itself and not the Windows 7 Desktop?

Hi EvilSupahFly, I found several knowledge base (KB) articles about this error and they are listed here just for your reference: Event ID 50 is logged when you try to restore a large sparse file on a Windows Server 2003-based computer You receive an error message when you save or move documents in Windows XP: "Delayed Write Failed" In the meantime, please create another share folder to see if the issue occurs. For more information about the share folder in Windows 7 with older Windows versions, please refer to this thread: Forum FAQ: How to make Windows 7 work with older Windows versions for networking and file sharing Regards, Linda Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you, and to click “Unmark as Answer” if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Very helpful advice and thanks for the links. However, I ended up solving the problem by setting the permission on the Windows 7 shares to "Everybody :: Full Control" and while it doesn't resolve the underlying question of exactly what was going on in the first place, it now allows reading, writing, and changing from the laptop, which was the original idea. As for creating additional shares, I did, and before my sweeping change above, was getting the same error, so I suspect I need to examine the Security Policy on the Windows 7 desktop in a lot greater detail. For now though, my wife is happy and that's all that matters. :) Hi EvilSupahFly, I found several knowledge base (KB) articles about this error and they are listed here just for your reference: Event ID 50 is logged when you try to restore a large sparse file on a Windows Server 2003-based computer You receive an error message when you save or move documents in Windows XP: "Delayed Write Failed" In the meantime, please create another share folder to see if the issue occurs.
