Can't use Hyper-V after enabling the feature

When I enabled the feature for Hyper V on one of our Consultant's Windows 8.1 laptop this is the  error we get when we try to open the MMC console app:

MMC Cannot open the file C:\windows\system32\virtmgmt.msc

This may be because the files does not exist, is not an mmc console, or was created by a later version of MMC. This may be3 also be because you do not have sufficient access rights to the file.

The user has local admin rights and when I opened up mmc.msc manually and tried to added the hyper V snap-in tool it errored out as well.

Is there a way to install Hyper-V with our windows 8.1 enterprise disk or is there a way to repair the Hyper-V Installation?

You kind of have to figure out what the problem is -- i.e., what error do you get when you try to open it with MMC?   However, the first thing to try is to uninstall the Hyper-V feature, reboot, then install it again.   My guess is its a permissions problem...   Is it a domain joined PC and are they logged into the domain at the time?

It is a pc on the domain and they are logged in.

They have full admin rights to their pc so it shouldn't be a permissions issue and i've tried removing and reinstalling Hyper-V and the same issues still occurs. I've also logged in as the domain admin and tried the install as well and nothing. Are these files downloaded from Microsoft? If so is there a way I can manually install it from the installation disk like I can with .NET ?

When we try to load it manually in mmc it says the snaptool is not available and asks if we would like to remove it.

It sure sounds like a permissions problem, Hyper-V permissions can get strange in multiple roles (domain and local) like that, especially is UAC is involved as well..     I would suggest asking your question in another forum where more hyper-V people hang around, perhaps in   http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home?forum=w8itprovirt&filter=alltypes&sort=lastpostdesc   or   http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home?forum=winserverhyperv&filter=alltypes&sort=lastpostdesc

Hi,

This issue can be caused by corrupted user profile file:

Please try to delete the entry under your user profile if there it is:

C:\Documents and Settings\myusername\Application Data\Microsoft\MMC\virtmgmt

Also try to take ownership of the file C:\windows\system32\virtmgmt.msc to check the results.

I'll try with the local admin account to see if that helps.

Also I'll do the deletion of hyper-v entries and take ownership of the files.

I'm scheduled to work on his laptop on monday and i'll give an update then.

Thanks for all your help so far.
