Can't upload zipped JPEG files due to strange user listings.
I have a problem with JPEG Security. I'm running Windows7 Home premium and for the last week I haven't been able to upload zipped JPEG files as Hotmail can't scan them. When I go to Security in Properties for the files there is now the following group/users listed: SYSTEM Home Home Users Administrators WMPNetworkSVC There is also a user which pops up for a few seconds with a red question mark next to it then dissappears: S-1-5-21-2775352452-3948834160-3103892614-1000 Thinking a had a virus I've run full scans with AVG(full version) and Malwarebytes to no avail. I then contacted AVG and ran the scans they sent to me, including Hijack this and autoruns, but they couldn't find anything and had no further advice. I've traced the unknown user to a SqmUpload file in C/Windows/System32/Tasks/WPD. That doesn't really mean anything to me though, so any help would be great! Seeing as I'm studying and need to send my assignments as a zipped JPEG file this issue is really causing me headaches:( I've tried to remove the extra users but can't without completely locking the JPEG due to inherited permissions, which I also can't change successfully. If I edit their permissions it still can't be scanned by Hotmail so doesn't solve my problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.Amanda Dehnen

Hi. Your topic caught my attention because I have on occasion wrestled with unknown security SIDs too. But I never saw them come-and-go like you explain. For me, they're here to stay. So what you describe, that's freaky, freakyfairy. I don't think this can possibly be the case, but you don't by chance have a Pay-as-You-Go FlexGo computer, do you? For an overview, see this Managed PC datasheet (pdf). I scanned through the Win7 registry, and it doesn't seem to be implemented anymore. But some ADM template stuff remains. Maybe if a Vista computer was upgraded it'd still apply? Did you upgrade? Well, on the far chance, here's instructions to disable Software Quality Management (SQM) in that case: KB951282 As I continued looking into this, I changed the search to WPD+SQM. As can be seen from this KB article KB959108, WPD stands for Windows Portable Device API. Maybe that's getting closer? However, that same KB article identifies SQM to mean Software Quality Metrics. Hmmm. Is that a euphemistic change, I wonder, or is it really something entirely different? Well, the very first item listed in the SQM search is this article: Microsoft Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP). You'll find references to CEIP in those KB articles I already mentioned. I really don't know what to think beyond that. I cannot find anything in my registry that seems comparable to what you must have in yours. I also checked that secure WPD folder. Mine's empty. However, I have disabled various internet things in Windows Media Player, including CEIP, so maybe that's why? That opt-in/out can be found in WMP in Tools > Options > Privacy. Sorry I couldn't be helpful. I really didn't understand what you meant by "scanned by Hotmail" and just which permissions you're looking at. So I got sidetracked with these other curious things. Anyway, I hope something I just mumbled will give you some direction. I'll watch this thread to see if someone else knows what's going on with it. It was especially interesting to come across this and numerous press releases like this. Good luck.

Thanks for your response derosnec. I appreciated your links and read them all but they didn't help. I don't have a Pay-as-You-Go FlexGo computer so that isn't the issue. Nor did I upgrade from Vista. I have deleted the file in my WPD folder but it hasn't changed the outcome. I have also gone through and disabled any CEIP related tasks. I also disabled WMP Network service which shouldn't have been running in the first place as I'm not a part of a network! But I'm still faced with the same problem. What happens with Hotmail is when I try to upload a zip file I get an error message which says the file can't be scanned so won't be attached. Seeing as the only difference this week compared to last is the listed user/groups in the security listing I figure this is the problem. I can manually change the permissions to the files but that is a huge hassle and I really want to figure out what is causing it. I wanted to do a system restore but the only one I can find listed doesn't go far enough back - and I know they are being set because I checked. I am now at a loss as to what to do next.Amanda Dehnen

Just a thought, are you password protecting the zip files? That may prevent Hotmail from being able to scan them.

No I'm not password protecting the zip files.Amanda Dehnen

Hi, I would like to confirm the following questions: Did this issue only occur to this specific zipped file? How about other files? What was the error message when Hotmail failed to scan files? I feel left out. I haven't a clue what you guys mean by "scanning uploads" to Hotmail. I zipped a couple files, then emailed them to myself using both mail.live.com and also wlmail. In neither case was there any hint those attachments were being virus-scanned. Not during uploads anyway. I also tried to find info about virus-scanning of attachments in the Live Help or in Help & Support. I couldn't find anything. I also consulted my NIS2011 documentation. There's no telling what Norton is doing. There never is. Here's something about 'Scan Documents on Upload' that maybe pertains to MSE. I don't use MSE. Some of those other things freakyfairy mentioned might be insightful if a fuller description was given.

Hi, The issue occurs on all newly created zipped JPEG files. I can zip other document files with no problems. When I try to upload them on Hotmail a red cross comes up next to the attachment with an error. The error message says "This file couldn't be scanned for viruses and wasn't added to your message." If you need any more information please ask. I'm not sure what will help but am more than willing to provide anything that could help fix this issue. I have a screengrab of the unusual listings but not too sure how to get that up here. Amanda Dehnen

zip and other compression tools will not compress a JPG file due the exiting compression of JPEG My MVP is for Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 IT, and I am getting increasingly good with Visual Studio. Developer | Windows IT | Chess | Economics | Hardcore Games | Vegan Advocate | PC Reviews

That may be the case but it doesn't explain why there are new user/groups listed in the control listings for security or why this has only started happening in the last two weeks. Nor why the zipped JPEGs are being knocked back by Hotmail. I have to submit my assignments as zipped files and they are JPEGs. So I still have the same problem. I CAN successfully upload zipped JPEG files created before the issue arose. So unfortunately I am still stuck!Amanda Dehnen
