Can't see hard drives in Windows 7
I have windows 7 RC. I have 2 Western Digital 500 Gb hard drives (internal) and 1 1Tb External Western Digital Hard drive Connected to my computer. If I restart my computer all the hard drives are seen for a while, it varies, but at some point I will open my computer and the whole thing just hangs. It looks like it is sitting there thinking, like trying to find them. If I right click on "computer" and go through the disk management path, all the hard drives are seen, but when I click on them i can get into them, but it looks like file extensions are missing. The Mp3s no longer have any music note image with them, it's just blank white squares. All files of all types are like that in all the drives. So i know the drives are seen in disk management, but not seen completely. I am so confused, why would they be able to be seen properly on a restart of my computer for a while and then stop working correctly and not be seen?

Anyone? Hi,Is the external hdd self-powered?Is Windows 7 installed on a single part of 500GB?

The external hdd is self powered. Windows 7 is installed on a single part of one of the 500GB hdds. If i am understanding you correctly, it is installed on my C drive.

Anyone please??? I would advise you change the settings into the hdd properties to optimize for better performance instead quick removal and index all the hdd and content as well (rebuild index).See the options available for the file types related to your problem. If you are not familiar with indexing service let me know.

I am not familiar with the indexing service. Also just another tidbit of info, this happens to the control panel tab under the start menu as well. All of the problems seem to be under the start menu. I copied the shortcuts for the 2 internal hdds and for the external and put them on the desktop and i can access them continuosuly, but the file extensions are missing like I said in my first post. If i go under the start menu and try to access any of the hdds or the control panel nothing will come up, but if i click on the icons i copied to the desktop i can access them, but with missing file extensions.

Yes the problem still persists if i remove the external. It is weird though because if I restart my computer, everything will work fine for a while...then it starts doing this again.

I have found the answer to my own problem. I have BitDefender Anti-Spyware and apparently Windows Defender was turned on also which caused a conflict and made my HDD's hang. I turned Windows Defender off and presto...problem solved. Thanks to I.V. for trying to help me out with this.
