Can't see computers on workgroup, but can ping via NetBios & IP ok
Very weird, but I can't see the computers on the workgroup in Windows 7 Home Premium. I know it's not the network, because I ran a 3rd party network diagnostic tool that shows me ALL the NetBios names and IP's of all the computers in the workgroup. I can also ping the IP and NetBios name of the computers from the cmd prompt. However Windows 7 does not show any computers in the network map, except itself. I tried creating LmCompatibilityLevel and set it both to "1" and "2" but did not help. Also tried to increase the LanManServer parameter size to "3" but did not help. Also tried reducing the encryption to 40bit compatibility (from default 128 bit), but did not help. I suspect that the problem is because I have an wireless Access Point connecting this computer to the network, and for some reason the network discovery doesn't see the computers. However it does show the AP, Router, and a few printers. Very odd. Any ideas ? thanks!

Make sure that all computers are in the same workgroup (for exp. "myworkgroup") In order to enable the Network Discovery settings, you may make sure the following services are enabled and running. - DNS Client - Function Discovery Resource Publication - SSDP Discovery - UPnP Device Host http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/winservergen/thread/2e1fea01-3f2b-4c46-a631-a8db34ed4f84

Yes all the computers are in the same workgroup. I can "see" them with a 3rd party tool running off the same machine. It's just Windows 7 that can't see them for some reason. I'll check those services you mentioned.

checked the services you mentioned .. All are set to Automatic and "started" status.

also to add: I tried disabling the Windows Firewall, did not helpAlso successfully mapped drives using IP & NetBios names to shared folderstried disabling IPv6, no help Pretty sure it's just a problem with Network Discovery, and it started after I put in the Access Point. Windows 7 id's the AP as a Gateway. The network map shows it as a AP/Switch/Hub.

Hi, I suspect the issue is related to the wireless Access Point. Please use a wireless router instead and then check if network discovery works properly on Windows 7. Niki Han TechNet Community Support

thanks for your reply. I also suspect the same. But it's strange why Windows 7 Network Discovery can't see the network, but a simple 3rd party tool can see it from the same computer.
