Can't run chkdsk on Windows 7 system.
I have a Windows 7 Home Premium system that tries to run chkdsk at each boot but chkdsk stops with an error message that it can't access the disk due to a recently installed software package and suggests using a restore point. It then proceeds
to boot Windows 7. If I try to use a restore point it fails saying that chkdsk must be run first which, of course, fails again with the same error message. No software has been installed other than Windows updates since the machine was running without
this problem.
I tried booting PE and running chkdsk on the partion which suceeded but didn't fix Windows 7 wanting to run chkdsk every time it boots.
Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this short of wiping the disk and starting over?

Your disk may be marked as "dirty". See if the instructions at:

help.

Hi,
Thanks for posting in Microsoft TechNet Forum.
You could boot the computer to Windows RE, run CHKDSK in a command prompt and check the result.
Regarding how to boot to Windows RE, please refer to:
What
are the system recovery options in Windows 7?
Meanwhile, if you have installed disk management software recently, please remove it.
For further analysis, please take a picture on the error on the screen, upload it to Windows
Live SkyDrive and share the link for us:

Hope this helps.

I have solved the problem. Sorry for the delay. I was out of town last week and just got around to fixing it. Here's what I found:
Apparently Spyware Doctor with Antivirus 2011 was preventing chkdsk from running on the system partition. Even in safe mode it wouldn't run. This may be due to a rootkit prevention feature which I don't believe was in the 2010 version. I disabled Spyware
Doctor completey, rebooted in safe mode, and chkdsk ran on the system partition. Once complete it then tried to run on the recovery partition but cancelled each time. I assigned a drive letter to the recovery partition and then ran chkdsk on
it. That cleared up the issue.
Thank you to all for the replies.
