Can't renew IP Address, no internet connection.
I can't connect to the internet. I get a message that says little or no connectivity. I tried IP renew, IP config, Flushing the IP and just about anything else I can find in internet forums and still get nowhere. I am running a Dell XPS desktop with Windows XP. I can connect a laptop to the same exact router without changing a thing and get an instant internet connection but my Dell desktop won't connect. The Nvidia netowrk card says it's working fine. I've restarted the computer and plugged/unplugged the router and modem time and again. HiJudging from the ipconfig output the nVidia card has no entry for Gateway so it can connect to the Router and get an IP.Your Default Gateway should be 192.168.15.1nVidia's onboard NICs are somewhat Quirky, try to install the latest drivers form nVidia. Jack-MVP Windows Networking. WWW.EZLAN.NET

I tried a new driver and it still would not work. I had to roll back to the old driver.

Make sure that your DHCP Client service is running. To do this:Start -> Run -> "services.msc"Then look for the line named "DHCP Client" and make sure that the status is "Started" and the Startup Type is "Automatic". If not, double-click on it and make it that way.HTH, JW

It was not started so I clicked on Start and got a warning box titled Services. In the box it says "Could not start the DHCP Client service on Local Computer. Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start."

Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start." Not usre if this helps you but for kicks I made sure that my anitvirus was not doing something funny here so I checked the DHCP dependencies and here's what it shows: [SC] GetServiceConfig SUCCESSSERVICE_NAME: DHCP TYPE : 20 WIN32_SHARE_PROCESS START_TYPE : 2 AUTO_START ERROR_CONTROL : 1 NORMAL BINARY_PATH_NAME : C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs LOAD_ORDER_GROUP : TDI TAG : 0 DISPLAY_NAME : DHCP Client DEPENDENCIES : Tcpip : Afd : NetBT SERVICE_START_NAME : LocalSystemHowever when I look at the afd driver under the device manager it indicates the following: "This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed. (Code 24)"

This would be the reason that you can't get an IP address. The DHCP Client service won't start until services that it depends on (dependency services) have started. To find out what these dependent services are, after you double-click on the "DHCP Client", then click on the "Dependencies" tab. You then must make sure that the dependencies listed are started and/or running. Some of them may be drivers. You might want to check your system log for other clues ( Start -> Run -> "eventvwr.msc"). For example, TCP/IP Protocol must be started. This would be found in the Network Control Panel -> Local Area Connection [or similar] -> TCP/IPHTH, JW

I cannot restart it. I've tried several times but it won't restart. I even tried going into Safe Mode and doing a system restore but I can't restore my machine.

This page offers some suggestions. It seems like you've done step 2 and that info looks good. So that leaves you with verifying the drivers are there and trying to start them by hand. Hopefully, that works and even if it doesn't, it should tell us which drivers are the problem.

In the hidden devices I see the following with warnings AFD & PartMgr AFDDevice Type: Non-Plug and Play DriversManufacturer: UnknownLocation: UnknownDevice Status: This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed. (Code 24)I clicked on Troubleshoot, the hourglass came on and nothing happened. I clicked on the Driver Tab and it said the status was Stopped so I tried to start it. I got an error box saying the driver was invalid. The file version of the Driver is 5.1.2600.5657 (xp_sp3_qdr.080814-1236)PartMgrDevice Type: Non-Plug and Play DriversManufacturer: UnknownLocation: UnknownDevice Status: This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed.
