Can't ping between SBS2003 and Windows 7 clients
We have a small school network using a SBS 2003 server. Existing XP clients all access the file server and each other, no problem. We bought 2 new clients, initially with Windows 7 Home Premium. When we had problems connecting them with the server, we applied the Windows Anytime Upgrade to Professional. This did not solve the problem. Symptom: We cannot ping the Windows 7 clients from the server, or the server from the clients. The 2 Windows 7 clients can ping each other. Things we've tried: Applied the Windows Small Business Server 2003: Windows 7, Windows Vista and Outlook 2007 compatibility update Disabled IPv6 on the adapter setting on the clients Turned off Windows firewall on the clients (Have been unable to install Trend antivirus since it's on the server) Changed network type to Work Still can't ping. Any ideas?

No suggestions yet, but what is the error you get when you try to ping to/from the server? Could not find host? Destination host unreachable? Request timed out?

Request timed out.

Is that in both directions? That error means there's a network connectivity issue. Check your cabling and/or switch/router and make sure everything's connected properly. It could also mean that your Windows 7 machines are residing on a different subnet than your server. Can you post the results of an IPCONFIG /ALL from both the server and one of the Windows 7 machines so that we can look over the settings? One from one of the working XP machines would be helpful as well.

Yes, the problem is in both directions. I am not at the school now, so I can't run the IPCONFIG/ALL, but I don't believe that a different subnet is the problem. The Windows 7 computers replaced XP computers - and no network changes were made at the time. The old XP computers connected to the network just fine.

By different subnet I don't mean a different physical network, rather a different logical network. Since the Windows 7 machines can ping each other but not the server I suspect a configuration issue in the IPv4 protocol. Maybe DHCP, maybe DNS, maybe both.
