Can't get Folder Redirection to work
I've been having trouble getting Folder Redirection to work in Win 7 (Ent and Ultimate). The machines are on a domain but there aren't any policies that should be affecting this. If I manually go change the location for a particular special folder to a network share, regardless of whether I hit yes/no to the copy files prompt, after hitting ok to close the dialog, if I go bring up the location tab again, it's back to the original location (c:\users\...). It just never sticks. Same thing seems to happen if I enable folder redirection for a set of users in a security group -- after a gpupdate /force:user, several logon/off to sync stuff, the folder location seems to still be c:\users\.... I suspect these issues are releated, as I should still be able to do it manually without the GPO. Not sure what's causing this, any help would be great...settings to check, etc. For the simple, non-GPO case, I don't see anything obvious in the event logs. I just change the location, hit ok then go back, hit properties and the location is no longer the new one... I should add that in both the GPO and non-GPO based redirect attempts, the offline files were setup. I.e., after manually attempting to redirect the Favorites folder, when I go to the network share that has the target folder, I can see that it's setup to be always available. Thanks

If you look in Event Viewer in the Application log you will find events related to folder redirection that will tell you what is wrong and why the folder redirection cannot be applied. Please look that up and get back with the information found there if you need further assistance.Blogging about Windows for IT pros at www.theexperienceblog.com

When I manually try to redirect the folders, there's no corresponding entry in the Application log.

That is true, there are no such events when redirecting manually, but if you again activate the group policy to apply folder redirection you should get some events that hopefully will lead us to a solution.Blogging about Windows for IT pros at www.theexperienceblog.com

How do you deploy these Windows 7 systems? If the deployment is image based, please let us know if you have defined the location of user profile in the unattended installation answer file.Arthur Xie - MSFT

It's just a small lab, nothing really automated or fancy. All of the installs were manual. I didn't specify any custom locations for the user profiles anywhere.

Where does the shared folder locate? On the Windows Server computer, or any Windows client, or a NAS? How does it work if you redirect to a shared folder on a Windows 7 client computer? Additionally please let us know if file sharing works properly. Meanwhile, I suggest you temporary disable firewalls and check the result again.Arthur Xie - MSFT

Same thing happens if I try to move the folder to one on the local machine. The target I'm trying to use is a DFS share on Win 2k8 R2 Servers in the domain as the data is replicated between multiple servers. There aren't any firewall issues that I can see; there are domain-wide policies to allow most protocols (and especially windows networking, etc) when connected to the domain. File sharing works normally otherwise. It is strange that it's not working even to another folder on the same machine. Something's going on and I suspect it has nothing to do with the network.
