I have 2 pc's, both running Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium, a laptop and a desktop. I have set up media sharing, play to features all absolutely fine, and can access all the files on my laptop from my desktop. However when I try and access all the files on my desktop from my laptop it keeps asking for a network ID and password. I know all my computer names, network id's, network passwords, and user account passwords, but no combinations are working! Is there a password I am missing somewhere?!?! Any advice woud be awesome!

Thanks for the advice but doesn't seem to do the trick. I can see the computer on the network and can view shared folders under the homegroup, but whenever I try and access them it says to 'Enter Network Password' then gives prompts to put in my UserName and Password, it finds the user. but not matter what password I type in it keeps saying that it is invalid! I may have missed something but I can't find anything under the Network and Sharing Center which mentions password protected sharing, only a option to view and change my Homegroup Password. At the moment I am making do with sending files from my Desktop to my desktop, no password needed.

I have tried accessing by going through the homegroup and double clicking the shared folders, but when I double click on the folder (or right click open) there is not response, and doesn't go into the folder. I am having the same exact problem and it is making it impossible to scan documents and have the scans sent to any folder on my computer, wirelessly from my HP Officejet Pro 8500 Premier printer. This is a brand new printer, by the way. (Thought printer model info might be helpful). In any case, I see the same demand for a network password and user name, both when trying to access other computers on my network AND to send anything from the printer to my main computer. I've used every password I can think of, all of which I wrote down when setting up my D-Link router on this (also new) Win 7 computer. Was able to get the printer to connect wirelessly so that I can at least print things sent from my desktop TO the printer, but it resolutely refuses to allow anything (a scan) to go from printer TO the desktop. Making the printer connect wirelessly at all, required the security key for my network. And it did work to connect for printing purposes. But that code is apparently NOT also the network password, since it is not recognized.

I'm having a very similar issue here, if not the same. This is stupid. I'm facing the exact same problem, its asking me for a username and password. i've tried all the possible usernames and passwords but im having no luck. I didn't have this problem when i was running Windows Vista on Both my laptop and desktop. But when i installed windows 7 on both my computers its asking me for a username and password. PLEASE HELP

In this case, it should be the user name and password of the target computer where you are accessing the file.

Hello I know this is a year old but I found out how to fix this. Go to Homegroup Go to advanced settings Go to the last option Make sure you have the windows recomended option picked and not the user account one. This fixed my problem hope it helps!

I had the same problem. I tried entering "guest" as the user name and leave the pw empty and it worked.

Peer-Peer Microsoft Lan Manager Networking has had these bugs since the day it was born. Try this. a) make certain all usernames are the same between the two machines, and each username has the same password as the other machine's like username. b) enable GUEST account on each and give it the same password on both (1ggg34 on both, etc.) Make certain network file sharing is enabled, but password protected file sharing is disabled. Map a network drive Z to Public on each machine from the other after waiting 10 minutes. Now it should work. The problem you had may be due to the LACK OF A PASSWORD for the Guest Account, which is integral to Lan Manager Networking (Microsoft Networking).

I had the same problem as you do, here is what I did. follow the first step from vivian xing set net user guest/active:yes on both computer when the password window comes out, type \\compter 2 name\ then, right click the shared folder, make sure it is allowed full share go to sercurity -----advance ----change permission ----add ----advance ---find now ---guest computer 1 that' s it. it solved my problem. good luck
