Can't find network password to file share windows 7
I have 2 pc's, both running Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium, a laptop and a desktop. I have set up media sharing, play to features all absolutely fine, and can access all the files on my laptop from my desktop. However when I try and access all the files on my desktop from my laptop it keeps asking for a network ID and password. I know all my computer names, network id's, network passwords, and user account passwords, but no combinations are working! Is there a password I am missing somewhere?!?! Any advice woud be awesome!

Hi, It should be a file permission issue. You can try the following steps: On the Desktop: Enable Guest account on both computers ==================1. Click Start Menu, type "cmd" (without quotation marks) in the Start Search box.2. Right-click the exe file and choose "run as administrator".3. Input the following command in the DOS prompt window and press ENTER: net user guest /active:yes Disable Password Protected Sharing==================Go to Network and Sharing Center and make sure the Password Protected Sharing is disabled Set permission=================1. Right click the shared file and choose Properties. Go to the "File Sharing" dialog box again, choose the account you use and click Add button.2. Select its Permission Level to Co-owner.3. Please also selete EveryOne from the list and click Add.4. Click Share. Also go to Advanced sharing and grant full control permission for the users. If the issue persists, you can turn on Password Protected Sharing and try to access. Thanks for the advice but doesn't seem to do the trick. I can see the computer on the network and can view shared folders under the homegroup, but whenever I try and access them it says to 'Enter Network Password' then gives prompts to put in my UserName and Password, it finds the user. but not matter what password I type in it keeps saying that it is invalid! I may have missed something but I can't find anything under the Network and Sharing Center which mentions password protected sharing, only a option to view and change my Homegroup Password. At the moment I am making do with sending files from my Desktop to my desktop, no password needed.

Hi, What exact error message is received? How about re-estabilish this homegroup? You can also try using file sharing instead of homegroup.Vivian Xing - MSFT

At the moment I am accessing the network section of explorer. I have tried accessing by going through the homegroup and double clicking the shared folders, but when I double click on the folder (or right click open) there is not response, and doesn't go into the folder. When trying to access it via the network it opens up a 'Windows Security' window asking for my user name and password, stating 'logon failure: Unknown User name or bad password'.

When trying to access it via the network it opens up a 'Windows Security' window asking for my user name and password, stating 'logon failure: Unknown User name or bad password'. I am having the same exact problem and it is making it impossible to scan documents and have the scans sent to any folder on my computer, wirelessly from my HP Officejet Pro 8500 Premier printer. This is a brand new printer, by the way. (Thought printer model info might be helpful). In any case, I see the same demand for a network password and user name, both when trying to access other computers on my network AND to send anything from the printer to my main computer. I've used every password I can think of, all of which I wrote down when setting up my D-Link router on this (also new) Win 7 computer. Was able to get the printer to connect wirelessly so that I can at least print things sent from my desktop TO the printer, but it resolutely refuses to allow anything (a scan) to go from printer TO the desktop. Making the printer connect wirelessly at all, required the security key for my network. And it did work to connect for printing purposes. But that code is apparently NOT also the network password, since it is not recognized.

I'm having a very similar issue here, if not the same. This is stupid. Hello I know this is a year old but I found out how to fix this. Go to Homegroup Go to advanced settings Go to the last option Make sure you have the windows recomended option picked and not the user account one. This fixed my problem hope it helps!

Brilliant - it works, but don't know why it's needed.

Peer-Peer Microsoft Lan Manager Networking has had these bugs since the day it was born. Try this. a) make certain all usernames are the same between the two machines, and each username has the same password as the other machine's like username. b) enable GUEST account on each and give it the same password on both (1ggg34 on both, etc.) Make certain network file sharing is enabled, but password protected file sharing is disabled. Map a network drive Z to Public on each machine from the other after waiting 10 minutes. Now it should work. The problem you had may be due to the LACK OF A PASSWORD for the Guest Account, which is integral to Lan Manager Networking (Microsoft Networking).

This is a very common issue, on windows 7, couple of clicks would solve this problem, Hit start, type "manage sharing" and choose the "Manage Advanced Sharing Settings" now make sure what you're going to edit is the profile currently selected for your network, e.g Home or Work ; Public , if you have only on connection you'll fine (current profile) near the profile that you're currently using. or you can go to network and sharing center and check your profiles under view your active networks, ______ once you go to Manage Advanced Sharing Settings make sure to: turn on network discovery under network discoveryturn on file and print sharing underfile and print sharingturn on sharing so anyone with network access.. under public folder sharingnow here's the key option in failed sharing between windows 7 and XP or older, under File sharing connection, make sure to choose Enable file sharing for devices that use 40- or 56- bit encryption.another key option for this issue is this, Disable Password protected sharing by choosing the Turn off password protected sharing , this is a must when connecting to a non-domain computer both windows 7 and XP, read this feature's description and you'll know that if its on, the user accessing network resources on the current PC should have a user name added to the machine that have the resources, so turning it off will definitely give you access.after this make sure you also set sharing permissions on the folders files and printers you want to share, to allow others to access it. ______ one more thing, both users Sharing\Accessing resources MUST have passwords, having no passwords would lead to this issue. _________________________________________________________ this should work with no problem, though sometimes you have to enable guest as Vivian Xing suggested. I've seen this issue million times before "back in technical support days" and this would solve it for sure, hope this helps good luck Aabed Yassine - Systems Engineer.
