Can't extend Vista to Linksys WMCE54AG
Just upgraded my XP Media Center 2005 to Vista RC1 ultimate. I can extend to my xbox 360 just fine, however i cannot extend to my settop Linksys extender, WMCE54AG.

Have you found or heard of a fix yet? I was getting ready to upgrade and saw you had this problem and don't want to stop using my Linksys.

I am having the same issue

I have researched this a little and it seems that XBOX 360 is the only device that can currently connect to Vista as of the final Vista release. It does not seem that linksys will fix this either as they discontinued their extender.

I was informedby two different Linksys Tech Support persons today that it WILL be supported via a firmware upgrade. They told me a firmware upgrade for the WMCE54AG would be available by the end of March 2007 via a phone call to the Linksys tech support center (my case # 070221-013245). Later, I confirmed by asking the same question viaa chat session. Attached is a transcript: Hi, my name is Nurodin (24931). How may I help you? I am interested in upgrading to Windows Vista but the WMCE54ag is not yet supported. I have received conflicting information from Linksys as to whether this hardware will eventually be supported. When I checked earlier I was told it would eventually be supported. Nurodin (24931): There is no definitively time when it will be available. Can you please make certain of this? I have gotten different answers each time I check w/ Linksys. I would like to know two things: 1) A definite yes/no about whether it will be supported 2) an approximate date if known Nurodin (24931): There is no definitive time when it will be available, but eventually they will create an upgrade for this device together with Windows Vista. Where was this information available (about having an eventual upgrade)? I have asked 3 times now and gotten different answers, so I want to be absolutely certain. Did you get this answer directly from the hardware sustaining engineers? Nurodin (24931): Yes, we did get this personally fromour Linksys technician and engineers. Hmmm. Pardon me for being skeptical. I just want to make sure. I have asked 3 times now. Twice I was told "yes" but when I asked again recently I was told emphatically "no" it would not be supported and I would have to get a new media center extender. You can understand why I would not want to spend another $300...especially since it is only 18 months old. Nurodin (24931): I understand that part, Steve. My answer is yes we have or will have a support for the Vista and WMCE54AG but like I said there is no definitive time when it will be available. Thank you Nurodin (24931): You're welcome. Would there be anything else?No Nurodin (24931): Okay. Again, this has been Nurodin (ID 24931). Feel free to contact us if you require further assistance. And please don't forget to log-out. Have a great day and take care!

Did you hear back from Linksys on the new firmware with support for Vista ? I am holding on my vista upgrade for the same reason as you. Thanks in advance

Yes, I finally heard back definitively from Linksys. Seems that their tech support people gave conflicting information initially. The WMCE54AG will not be supported with Windows Vista...now or in the future. If you upgrade to Vista, you must either buy an Xbox 360, or wait for one of the newer media center extenders to come out. I'm not happy about it, and I'm sure none of the other people that bought MCE2005 extenders are happy either. As of this writing, I don't think there are any other choices for a Vista-capable extender besides the Xbox 360. I'm going to wait until something comes out that doesn't have a noisy fan in it...one of the main problems I have with putting anXbox next to my TV and A/V equipment. --Steve

Having same issue here - just bought one believing Linksys would support the product Perhaps there's a need for a 'community' lobby to Linksys. I'd happily pay something rather than buying an XBox or repeating a $3-400 purchase if Linksys ever produce another one... Thoughts?

Do you guys have a clean install of Vista? I had problems with all my tuners after I upgraded from MCE2005. Then I performed a clean install and all the tuners were recognized immediately. Good Luck! Johnerick

Johnerick, I think you are confusing the media center capability of Vista (ability to recognize TV tuners, abilty to record TV shows, etc.) with the media center extender capabilities of Vista. The problems we are all having relate to finding something other than the Xbox 360 that can allow our media center computer to live in one room, and our TV screen to live in another room. If you have been able to get an HP or Linksys "version 1" extender to work with Vista, then we will all eagerly await the secret recipe from you. But it seems pretty clear (at least from microsoft) that V1 extender hardware will not be supported by Vista and we'll have to either buy an Xbox 360 that we place next to our TV screens and string an ethernet cable back to thecomputer running Vista, or wait for some of the V2 extenders to start appearing. As of this writing, there are no V2 extenders other than the Xbox 360.
