Can't dial in to RAS
Verified line is working. Works fine when dialing in with XP. Cannot verify credentials in Vista Business or Vista Business sp1. Can somebody run me through the settings? Perhaps I missed one for Vista? Any ideas? -thanks

Hi flayofish, Before we go further, I would like to confirm the following information with you: 1. What exact wording of the error message was received when attempting to dial in to the RAS server on the Windows Vista machine? 2. What device is being used as the RAS server? 3. Is it a VPN connection? If so, is it a PPTP or L2TP connection? 4. What authentication method is being used? I look forward to your reply.

Error 919: The connection could not be established because the authentication protocol used by the RAS/VPN server to verify your username and password could not be matched with the settings in your connection profile. Looked at our RAS box, seems it's running MS-CHAP. Vista is only gives options for: PAP, CHAP and MS-CHAP v2. It would be easier (from a campus wide perspective) to enable the Vista machines to authenticate using MS-CHAP. Is there any way to do this, or does the server need to change? RAS: win2k sp4. It is not a VPN connection, we use a different server to handle VPN connections. The RAS box uses Active Directory to confirm credentials. -thanks

Added MS-CHAP v2 to RAS server and restarted services. Added MS-CHAP v2 to XP and Vista laptops. XP and Vista laptops cannot login. Removed MS-CHAP v2 from Server. Back to only XP laptops able to login.

Problem solved. There was an authentication setting buried in a policy setting. Set the server for MS-CHAP v2 and authentication setting in policy to MS-CHAP v2. Restarted services and set client laptops to same. All works fine now. Long story short, it's fun to inherit a dated server.
