Can't connect to the internet using IE, but can using Firefox, among other issues.

She thought that it was legit and clicked 'Fix Now' and then it took her to a screen that said she needed to purchase the program. We she already has a version of McAfee anti-virus on her computer and thought that it was bogus that she had to pay for it again, so she closed out of the window. That's when her problems started. IE opened up to ____ sites, she kept getting these 'red shield' error messages, etc. So being the good son-in-law I installed MBAM, ran the scan and delete like 160 problems. Then I downloaded SP1 for her. Yes, that correct, 2010 and still running the original OS. No updates were installed for Windows Firewall or Windows Defender. After installing SP1, I could connect to the internet via Firefox, but not IE. I keep getting an error message of 80072EFD in the Windows Update window in the control panel. I tried accessing Windows Update from IE, but no luck. I ran another scan with MBAM with no other spyware found. McAfee's definitions hadn't been updated since Nov. '09, so I updated those and ran a scan with no viruses found. I disable Windows Firewall and that's the ONLY firewall installed, and I still can't connect to the internet using IE. I've been using Firefox without any problem. I even downloaded the most recent FireFox. I also downloaded Secunia PSI, but it won't connect to allow me to do a scan (firewall still turned off). This morning I was going to see if MBAM would download new updates/definitions and that won't even connect now. I use LogMeIn to help my family and friends out with their computers, so I thought that I'd give it a try with this laptop I've been working on and it works just fine. I'm just stumped. Can anyone help me? Firefox & LogMeIn work, but nothing else will with the firewall being disabled. I'm at my wits end. Also, I downloaded SP2 onto my thumb drive and installed it on the laptop, but still no luck with connecting. Jeremy
