Can't connect to secure wireless internet.
I have recently installed Windows 7 RC 64 bit. Everything works good, except for my wireless internet connection.I have a linksys router (WRT160N) and a linksys adapter in de pc (WUSB600N).I use WPA2 security for my wireless connection. The first problem is thatthe pccan't always find my router. When the pc is trying to connect to the router, my security key is asked for. When I type it in, I get the message Passphrase incorrect, but i'm 100% certain that it is correct. In an other topic in the forum someone had the same problem, but this was resolved by pressing the button on his router looking like a refrech button. This doesn't work for me. When I press this button, the pc is connecting, but returns an error, connection failed or sometihing like that. When I set my router to unsecure the pc connects to the router without a problem, but off course i don't want my wireless to be unsecured. When I put the router to WEP security, I don't even get t the point where I have to put in my security key. So that also doesn't work.Hope someone can help me.Does anyone know if Microsoft reads this forum and does anything with these issues.

Hey. I have similar problem as you. It finds the wireless find, but it won't accept the security key. But I found something weird. I am also using wpa2 but when holding my mouse over the wireless, and the small popup menu appears (the one that shows the name, security type, etc.) it show the security type as wep. This might be the problem, that windows 7 does get the right information. Do have the same problem or does it show the right security type? Thanks in advance for any help. /sorry for my bad english.

FWIW, my Win7 RC1 [build 7100] laptop correctly indicates that my wireless network is using WPA2-PSK.What wireless card do you have? Did the drivers work out of the box or did you need to install the wireless card drivers using the Troubleshoot Compatibility function, ie. right-click on the driver install file and select Troubleshoot Compatibility? I had to do the latter. In my case I installed using Vista SP1 compatibility for my Belkin F5D7010 ver 8000 card.MS-MVP Windows Desktop Experience, "When all else fails, read the instructions"

I have aasus 1000h, and i think is a ralink wireless card it has. It "worked" out of the box or it could find the wireless network, but not connect. It works fine in Windows XP and Ubuntu Remix. I have tried to install the latest driver from asus for windows xp and it still works, but still has the same problem. And i'm sorry but don't know what the "Troubleshoot Compatiblity" is when it comes to installing drivers. I have had no problems with hardware on my asus 1000h or my primry pc, other than the problem with security type/key.Hope to find a way to make it work with my Linksys WRT160N V2 wireless router. Thanks in advance.Oh.. don't know if this is important, but i'm running windows 7 32bit

If I remove my routers securityWindows connectsand have internet acces and if I change it to WEP it also works. But setting it to WPA or WPA2 Windows 7 still thinks its WEP. Using the right key for WPA or WPA2, Windows 7 tells its wrong. But using a WEP key, then it takes it and then comes up with troubleshoot. I guess that its because it thinks its a WEP network, but the router isn't and therefore refuesses to accept the key given by Windows. (Dont know if this helps or makes any sense). Also I can see that it picks up other local wireless networks, and can see them as WPA2. So it might be a problem with this type of router??Thanks in advance for the any help.

I have tried it with my security set to WEP again and now it is working. I haven't change anything since last night. So it's very strange that it is working now.I don't know if WPA would work now, but although I would prefer WPA2, I am afraid that if I put my router back to WPA2, I won't be able to connect anymore.I haven't rebooted my pc since it works, so I hope it will work next time I start my pc.Hope Microsoft will fix this soon!

Hello, I found that Windows 7 detects my wireless signal as WEP but the modem / router is set WPA-PSK AES. With VISTA everything works correctly ....! It will be a bug? Someone knows how to send this report to Microsoft? Thanks from Italy...

My modem / router is the one that gives Alice (Alice Gate VoIP ADSL 2 - fairly recently so that is Vista Capable) ... just do not know! I also tried the 32 bit but equal. If I use WEP works perfectly! Try to see if you can update the firmware of the modem ... Thank you and good forum

Hi, updating the router FW does not help. I installed W7RC yesterday, wireless connection worked fine until Windows Update had done it's business. After the update, I got the connection errors you all mention here. We'll have to wait until Microsoft comes up with something else. Otherwise I recommend a wired connection if possible, WEP are as good as useless seen from the security point of view :-)

Kega, Vincent, et al.,I have a WRT160 N router, version 2, build 11. According to the traffic on the Linksys website, the problem is with the router. There is a firmware error that causes the router to drop the connection for both direct link and wireless connections. In addition, several individuals reported dramatic slow down of internet speed even after removing the router. I installed this router on Windows 7 RC and had the same problem. I did a clean install with the router in place hoping that W7RC might correct the problem. No luck. Apparently, Linksys does not have a solution to this problem yet. Several individuals who attempted to contact Linksys support received no help. This problem occurs with XP, Vista, and W7RC because it is a router malfunction. Sorry for the bad news. Perhaps Linksys will correct this. I hope so since the router is practically useless.Roy

I have a LINKSYS usb dongle (extended with a usb extension supplied in the box to make it desk standing) connecting to a netgear router with Windows 7.I did not use the softwaresupplied on installation cd, but used the driver on cd by going through device manager and asking it to update/find driver and pointing it to cd. The dongle worked. When I tried it the first time with W7 I installed the software and could not get it to connect, even though it detected the network!!

Hey Roy. I have the same router as you, with the latest firmware. But if its a router problem, how can it be that its only windows 7 that makes this security type error ? If I use Windows XP, Ubuntu or OSx, on the same laptop, it works perfectly. There are no delays or connections errors. My Nintendo Wii and mobil phone also works without a problem. If it's a router problem, shouldn't it be consistend and give me problems on every device? Or am I missing something?

I had exactly the same problem: WPA is detected as WEP and so the key is detected as "wrong" because it's more than 13 character. I can say that depends on the adapter for two reasons: 1) I have tried another adapter and it works 2) I have solved the problem using a different driver I suggest going to the manufacturer site or to http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Home.aspx and search for the ID of your hardware (something like USB\VID_15A9&PID_0004, you can find under Device Manager->(right-click on the device)Properties->Details->Hardware Ids). To install use the device manager to update the driver. Hope it helps.

I have had my wireless that is installed at install of w7 wiped out by running free windows registry repair 1.8 and higher. trouble shooting says it cannot find a network though drivers and adapters still in place. using dlink adapter on an old biostar MB 550 or so. Device manager has no problems showing both adapters and stating drivers are there. I used windows 7 start up repair on install disk. think it may be used without the disk but it was still in drive. the network will be there if restored to an earlier time than when lost. make sure to go back far enough for microsofts generic drivers for adapters to be reinstalled.

Get the driver from RAlink who make the chipset for the WUSB600N. I had this exact same problem and solved it with that driver. You MUST use the wireless utility that comes with it though, not WIN7s. Here is the driver http://www.ralinktech.com.tw/data/drivers/IS_AP_STA_RT2870_D-1.4.1.0_VA-2.3.1.0_RU-2.2.2.0_VA-2.2.7.0_AU_2.1.2.0_VA-2.1.2.0_031309_1.0.8.0_Free.exe Aaron

Alok, my computer can see 8 wifi networks, one WEP, the others both WPA and WPA2. I've just tried to connect with my sons network, he uses a 3Com router with WPA, strange, but this actually works. Mine is a D-Link DIR-615. Please see my first posting; After finsihing install of W7RC, the wireless connection actually worked for 4-6 hours, then after installing all the updates from Microsoft I shut down the computer. Next day the problems arised :-) Regards T.

It sounds like there's a problem with the specific combination of your router model and wireless NIC+driver. Could you please tell me which hardware version (A1, B2, C1) and firmware version your DIR615 is? It would be quickest if I can reproduce this in-house and then debug.Additionally, do you have adifferent Windows machine (or different adapter) which connects OK to this router? If yes, would you please install Network Monitor 3 from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=983b941d-06cb-4658-b7f6-3088333d062f&displaylang=enand install it on your machines (the Win7 RC one which fails to connect and the other one which connects fine). Please configure netmon to perform a monitor mode capture on both machines, select PHY and channel that your Access Point is configured for (you can checkwhich one from it's configuration page or searching for the router's SSID in the output of "netsh wlan show net bss"), zipupthe captures and send them to alokm at microsoft dot com.For details of monitor mode please take a look at http://blogs.technet.com/netmon/archive/2007/06/15/wireless-capturing-with-network-monitor-3-1.aspx. Make sure that you see beacon frames from the router in question and please include the SSID of the problematic routerin your email.Thanks,-alok. Alok Manchanda Microsoft Corporation

SaMcp1123,I have not been able to get it to work. I am still working with WEP security instead of the preferd WPA2 security. Other problem I am having is that in about 50 % of the times when I start my PC, my linksys adapter is not found and there for my connection is not found. I have to restart my pc to fix this. When I restart it always works. Bu t this isn't new to Windows 7, I had the same problem with Vista.

Have you tried all the options given to you here? It is possible it is your driver. Your driver has to support WPA to use WPA. If you just used the driver that was built into Windows 7 that could be the problem.
June 15th, 2009 5:26pm

I'm also having this same problem. I have a Linksys WUSB600N adapter, and a Linksys WRT160N router (with WPA2-PSK wireless security configured). My unusual network configuration and ambitious attempt to narrow down the problem may be helpful, if there still is question about why this problem exists... I happen to have have an unusual network configuration in the sense that my Linksys N router acts as the gateway to our Internet connection, but we also have an Apple Airport Express G router that's a mere access point on the network (long story). However, my experience is the same as others I've seen in this thread. I bought the Linksys N adapter and N router back in March so there was a router with network ports and a fast connection so I could stream content from my desktop to my then-new XBOX 360. Also, it fixed a problem where my Zune 80 wouldn't connect with the Apple router, but that's neither here nor there. I was using Windows 7 Beta 2 and the N adapter and N router played perfectly together--I had a strong, fast signal, and lightning-fast rates in online speed tests. When I installed Windows 7 RC, I decided to take advantage of my Athlon 64 X2 processor's capabilities and go up to the x64 version of Windows, having been made confident it wouldn't cause me problems with legacy apps. On every attempt to connect to my N network, it rejected the passphrase. However, I could connect to the Apple G router with WPA2 security, on-and-off. I tried installing the USB N adapter on my laptop, which I'd also installed Windows 7 RC x64 on. The same problem occurred. I then tried installing RC1 x86 on this computer, where it worked in the last beta, and the same problem occurred. I then ran out and got a Linksys PCI card Wireless N router, thinking maybe it was an issue with USB devices. The same problem occurred. I still had Windows Vista (x86) installed on this computer in a different partition, and the wireless N adapters both work just fine. Also, I have a recent Linksys Wireless G PCI adapter and that can connect to any of these networks fine in either Windows 7 or Windows Vista, but, obviously, I have less throughput with G, so it's not so good for using the XBOX with Windows Media Center as an extender. ... So, to summarize my experiences: Windows Vista SP1 x86 with two separate N adapters, or a G adapter, connecting to either a Wireless N or Wireless G access point with WPA2-PSK: Good. Windows 7 Beta 2 X86 with two separate N adapters, or a G adapter, connecting to either a Wireless N or Wireless G access point with WPA2-PSK: Good. Windows 7 RC X86 or X64 with a G adapter, connecting to either a Wireless N or Wireless G access point with WPA2-PSK: Good. Windows 7 RC X86 or X64 with N adapter, connecting to either a Wireless N or Wireless G access point with WPA2-PSK: Fail. ... HI there I am having an issue with my wireless adapter and router. Here is the situation My leaser will not allow me to have an extra cable modem install near the only place I can have my desktop. So my next course of action was to get a wireless adapter and connect it to a wireless router. Here is the entire map NOT WORKING: Desktop -> Linksys adapter Model: WUSB600N -X > Linksys wireless router Model: WRT400N -> Cable Modem. WORKING: Desktop -> Linksys wireless router Model: WRT400N (connected through hardline) -> Cable Modem. WORKING: Desktop -> Cable Modem. This is what I have done. I did a fresh install of Win7 Build 7100 x64. Got the router to install and connect no issues had to get a 50ft string of Cat-5 to string across the house until Newegg delivered my router and adapter. Once the router was install I have no issues of internet. I got the adapter installed, device drivers had no problems, ran the software that came with the router (LELA) and no problems still. Using Win7 networking management, connected manually to the network I had just set up. No problems. Unplugged the cable from the router and the Ethernet jack in my PC no issues. Still pulling down 8MB tested at (speedtest.net) with the wireless adapter. Only issue the router was plugged into a wall jack near my comp, I got this also to connect my 360 to via hardline. So thinking it was all good, I shut down my pc, unplugged my router, relocated it and plugged everything back in, turned everything back on. No internet. I can see the network some times with excellent signal, try to connect using WPA or WPA-2 with the correct security key and 7 tells me I cannot connect to the wireless router. Thinking the router fugged up, unplugged the 50 ft cord and plugged it directly from my modem to the router and i get internets. Second try, relocated the router and connected the computer via Cat-5 cable to the router and voila internet. I know for a fact the wireless router is good because I can connect it to my iTouch and NDS with no issues. After relocating it the first time to be near my 360. I have tried resetting the IP, resetting the modem and reconfiguring my wireless network. Still cannot connect to internet via adapter. I am using the most up to date drivers for my P5N-D NIC, chipset, everything my basic TS steps have fixed most of my problems and this will not fix. Anyone have any suggestions?

Pyrocide: as mentioned in this thread, there appears to be some sort of issue with certain wireless adapters + wireless routers and WPA/WPA2. This is the case for my own network.I have a linksys wrt160N v2 router, and I have this problem with one of my computers using a ralink adapter and a linksys wusb600n adapter. I have had four other win7 7100 computers work perfectly with thesame router, and the ralinkadapter worked with build 7000. The workaroundwhich works for most people is to use WEP security.

Has anyone found a solution for using WPA2?I still have the same problem. If I set my router to WPA2, windows still sees it as WEP.I did have the same isues with connecting to WEP by the way. That is, after putting my router back to WEP i wasn't able to connect. So before I went to sleep I disconnected the router form the powergrid and the next day when I came from work I connected it back to the power and I got connection to the internet through WEP.I didn't have a problem using WEP untill I got a new mobile (Samsung S8000 Jet) which i can't seem to get connected via WEP but can get it connected via WPA2. So now I have to make a choose WIFI for mobile or for the PC.
