Can't connect to a remote desktop session or map a drive on Windows 2003 with Windows 7
Hello, first a bit of background: Network is Windows 2003 AD. All computers are on the same subnet and members of the same domain. I am attempting to connect from Win7 Pro to Windows 2003 Server 1 DC - ServerA - Win 2003 1 Print/File Server - ServerB Win 2003 1 File Server - ServerC - Win 2003 PROBLEM: I can connect to the DC - ServerA with remote desktop, file sharing and drive mapping I can't connect to ServerB with remote desktop, file/print sharing or drive mapping I can't connect to ServerC with remote desktop or drive mapping but I can browse to the shares available on ServerC (\\serverC\share) All of these problems began when I performed a fresh install of windows 7 onto an XP SP3 machine. All other computers on the domain do not exhibit any of these problems at all. They started when we upgrade. We've performed the upgrade (clean install) on two machines and they both experience the problems listed above. I am able to PING all three machines from the Windows 7 desktop Here's what I've tried to no effect: Turning off the firewall on the server Turning off the firewall and AV (we use Symantec Endpoint Protection) on the desktop My guess is that there is a change in the way Windows 7 handles security negotiation that I'm unfamiliar with. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, Since Windows 7 can connect to ServerA via Remote Desktop and can map drive, we can consider the network settings on Windows 7 are correct. This issue can occur by incorrect permission or settings on ServerB or ServerC. At this stage, I suggest you perform the following steps to troubleshoot the issue. 1. Assure the Windows 7 user account has enough permission to access ServerB and ServerC. 2. Please open System Properties on Windows 2003 and assure Windows 7 user is allowed in Remote Desktop group. For more information, please refer to the following article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/814590 If the issue persists, please capture the error message when remote connecting ServerB or ServerC and upload it for research. Thanks, Novak

Hello, Thank you for responding! 1. The user is the Domain Administrator account and has suffcient permissions to ServerB and ServerC. Tested by loging in with account locally in the server room and using RDP from another (Win XP SP3) computer on the same subnet. 2. The user has sufficient permissions and is part of the Remote Desktop group. The variable here is the OS. On Win XP SP3 there are no problems on Windows 7 we have all of the problems. Here are some strange twists: I've just rebooted both machines and ServerC is now behaving as expected it seems that is was caught in a shutdown and need some help to restart. The problems still persist with ServerB. This explains why ServerC and ServerB had slightly different behaviors. Also, Our Company makes use of an SSL-VPN that includes a web interface with links to launch remote sessions. These remote sessions are run by a Java based client. If I connect by that method I am able connect remotely to ServerB. I am still not able to map a drive on ServerB or browse to it. Here s the error I get when attempting to connect Remotely to ServerB using the native windows RDP client. I'm not even getting to authentication. All of this suggest two things to me Windows 7 has something in its firewall I don't know about or Windows 7 and Windows 2003 (ServerB) have some incompatibility in their RDP versions. EDIT: ServerB is our print server. Not being able to connect to it from Win7 machines means that our printers aren't added to the Win7 machines with our logon scripts like they are with the Win XP machines. This is the biggest problem. I'm really stumped here... What do you think?

Hi, Can you remote access the ServerB machine from other machine, such as ServerA or other client machine? This issue can occur by ServerB’s security or Group Policy settings. Please temporarily disable firewall and Group Policy settings on ServerB for a test. Thanks, Novak

Can you remote access the ServerB machine from other machine, such as ServerA or other client machine? I can connect to ServerB from other machines as long as they aren't Windows7. In fact I could connect from the same machine before I upgraded it to Win7. This issue can occur by ServerB’s security or Group Policy settings. Please temporarily disable firewall and Group Policy settings on ServerB for a test. I disabled the firewall on both the server and the Win7 client. No change still unable to connect. Not sure which security settings I should disable in the Server group policy settings and I'm also not sure how to disable the whole policy without effecting the rest of the domain. Any ideas? Thanks, Alex

Hi, In order to troubleshoot the issue, I suggest you restart the ServerB machine and Windows 7 machine to Safe Mode with Networking mode, and then run Remote Connection again. If the issue still occurs, please upload the Event log to the Skydrive ( www.skydrive.live.com ). Collect Event log ========================= a. Click "Start", input "eventvwr" (without quotation marks) in the Start Search bar and press Enter. b. Right click on "Application" on the left frame, choose "Save Log file As"; in the pop-up window, click to choose the Desktop icon on the left frame, input "app" in the "File name" blank, and then click save. c. Right click on "System", with the same method, save it as "sys". d. Locate the two saved log files on the Desktop and upload them. Also, please collect the Netmon log file. Collect the Netmon trace ========================= a. Download NetMon3.3 from the following website and install it on the computer http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=983b941d-06cb-4658-b7f6-3088333d062f b. Launch NetMon3.3. c. In the Microsoft Network Monitor 3.3 window, click Create a new capture tab … d. In the new tab, select all the Network Adapters in the Select Networks window. e. Then, switch to Network Monitor, press F5 to start NetMon. f. Try to connect the ServerB again. When it failed, go to step 7. g. Go back to the NetMon window and press F7 to stop the NetMon. h. Press Ctrl+S to save the Netmon file named test. i. Upload it to Skydrive. Hello, I did as you suggested restarted the server and booted into safe mode with networking. I then tried to connect to the server through RDP and then tried to browse to it. Both with no effect. I've uploaded the event log and the netMon test.cap file to skydive.live.com. Not sure how best to share them though. let me know. Thanks, Alex

Problem Solved. Turned out to be a NIC issue. The NIC on the server was either advertising two MAC addresses or the Switch was seeing two MAC addresses. Swapped out NIC problem solved. Thanks for your help!
