Can't block websites on Host Files... Just won't work.
I've been trying to block a few sites on host files but it just wouldn't work and it's getting to a point where I am just getting really pissed off because I don't know what else I could do. I follow detailed instruction. Open Notepad as Admin, then open Hosts and add '127.0.0.1 www.facebook.com' and then save the file. I've tried putting just one space between .0.0.1 and the www or i've even tried pressing the Tab key to decide how much space to put in between. I've tried facebook.com with or without the www. Nothing's worked so far. Now I seem to have a new problem on my hand. Someone suggested I reformat my Host files so now I don't have the 'Hosts' file anymore but hosts.bak appears. I just bought this machine about a month and half ago. It is running a trail version of Norton on it. I read somewhere that security softwares can block any changes to the Hosts files. I tried shutting off everything on Norton and even that didn't work. I need to block some sites because they interfere with my work. Would truly appreciate any help.

If this is for a home/family enviroment then I would suggest downloading windows live family safety. Another option is to block websites in your router, some routers allow you to create a profile based on a users mac address and you can create rules and block sites. Please see the following page and/or review your routers manual, if you decide to shop for a router that would suit this need I would suggest you visit a networking forum to choose features you would like in a router. http://explore.live.com/windows-live-family-safety?os=other There are much better solutions for blocking websites than using hosts files, and you can also block access based on time periods.
