Can't alter properties for bookmarks - 'An error has occurred when writing the property...'
When I attempt to modify the properties of a bookmark (rate it, add a description, etc), I get the message 'An error has occurred when writing the property...' This has been reported on other forums. Does anyone know of a fix for this? I know it was a bug in the RC, and it looks like it carried over to the RTM.Any help will be most appreciated.

Does this help any?IE > Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > remove the checkmark in front of "Enable third party browser extensions" > OK then restart IE.If that does not help re-enable third party browser extensions. If it does help, you would have to track down the third party browser extension causing the problem.Another thing try is to restart the computer in "Safe Mode with Networking" and see if the same problem exists.

Nah - it doesn't help. I can use IE8 64 bit, which has no third party add-ons, and it doesn't work. I have three computers that run Windows 7 (2 that run 32 bit and one that runs 64 bit) and all three suffer from the same issue. Running with all add-ons disabled makes no difference.Give it a try - see if you can change properties of any of your bookmarks. Even better, create a shortcut to a website on your desktop and try to change the details. It doesn't work. It's not a permssions problem, as far as I can tell, because running as administrator or disabling UAC makes no difference.

Anyone have any ideas? I'd appreciate it if others would try to change details of bookmarks and report their successes/failures.

Yes, you are correct that does occur.I am trying to figure out if it is actually by design.

I can't image it would be on purpose. Why give a user the ability to make changes, only to deny those changes?

What I am thinking is that there is a setting that would allow the change. But it could be abug. I'm surprised more users have not reported it.

Anyone else have any ideas? At this point, I want to submit a bug report, but I can't find information on that process anywhere. Can anyone point me to a bug submission website for 7?

I very often with right click add prefix to the Text of a bookmark then sort byname to see items I've started with aaa or or aa or bbb or zzz where I want them to be. Check Favorites folder in your user account, mine is read only, not hidden. This does not apply to bookmarks within which are not read only.

Check Favorites folder in your user account, mine is read only, not hidden. This does not apply to bookmarks within which are not read only. It's not about sorting or about permissions on the favorites folder. A shortcut created on the desktop does not reside in any favorites folder and is not read-only, so there is no permissions issue. Are you saying you have no problems changing the rating, adding a description, or adding notes to a bookmark/internet shortcut? Re-read this thread and create a shortcut as I suggested, then post your results. I'm certain you'll find you cannot change the rating, description, or notes fields on the details tab, under properties.

My Mistake, you are right; not possible to vary .URL detail using Windows 7 U. 32/64 BitHowever using Vista U. 32 Bit, also in this machine, I see the Favorites folders in V. U. 32, W. 7 32, and W. 7 64 As Blue Folder with Gold star to the right; and using Vista I can change .url detail in W. 7 Possibly one could use Virtual Windows XP to make changes not possible in Windows 7 OSs but this is not a solution to the problem. .url in Registry (W. 7 32Bit):Persistent Handler8CD34779-9F10-4f9b-ADFB-B3FAEABDAB5A ShellEx there are 5, all point to FBF2... below000214EE-0000-0000-C000-000000000046: FBF23B40-E3F0-101B-8488-00AA003E56F8 Points to item with binary Access permission settings which possibly could correct problem? I see that other formats can be varied, never having tried it before. This for .Jpg Date Taken is useful for me, not previously knowing it could be entered and that this could be done on multiple .jpg selected. Detail in .Wmv DescriptionCan enter Title, Subtitle,Rating, Tags, Comments Detail in .Jpg DescriptionCan enter Title, Subject,Rating, Tags, Comments .Jpg OriginCan enter Authors, Date Taken, Date Aquired, Copyright .Jpg CameraCan enter Model, etc.

I just 'upgraded' to IE9, and am still getting: "An error has occurred when writing the property..." Reports of this yet unresolved problem go back to 2009! Maybe the IE team should get one of the kids from the Firefox to come in and show them how to solve the problem! <grin>

I have the same problem since I upgraded to W7 from Vista. Hoping after all this time, someone has an answer. Also, description and Notes do not display on bottom of the folder--at least not consistently.
