Can't access some of my files...
Hello,Since I installed vista RC1 5600 I can not access some of my files. In my picture folders a few pictures can not be opened/renamed/copied etc...I have tried :- disabling the UAC, - enabling the administrator and login in with it- and adding the group administrator to my user accountnone of this workedWhen I go to the security properties of the file I get :"the requested security information is either unavailable or can't be displayed"in advanced->Permissions :in advanced->effective permisions :"You do not have permission to view this object security properties, even as an administrator user. Try taking ownership of the object, which includes permissions to view it's property, Click Ok to close this Dialog, and then go to owner tab"(by the way this text is not displayed in a dialog box but in a tab)in advanced->auditing :same message except "permission" is replaced by "privileges"in advanced->owner :"you do not have permission to see this object's owner, even as an administrator"Please help me regain access to my files :-(note : it is also happening for one of my folder

Ok I updated to 5728 and I still have the same problem...Worse: After I updated some files are not displayed in the explorer like if there were not here, but the drive occupations shows that they are probably still here...What I did :-In my personnal folder I changed the links :For exemple for the picture directory : I changed the location to j:\photos where I keep my pictures. After updating to 5728 all the files in those directory are not showing.I have that for documents, videos, music, pictures, and favorites

Ok I solved both of my problems :For the files I could not access or even change ownership :turn UAC ON!then you can see the owner and change the ownership.... :-(change the rights [turn UAC off] (Sorry it's still too anoying, it's worse than surfing without popup control)For the file who disapeared after updating to 5728:Apparently when changing location of user->picture to something like D:\myRealpictureFolder,the folder myRealpictureFolder is replaced by a dummy folder, while the real folder and files inside are moved to a hidden directory called : D:\$INPLACE.~TR\Machine\DATAThat is why the disk occupation was still the same...Some complains bellow :I am sorry to say but IS THAT REAL?when you change the pointed location of your picture folder, windows move your files without telling you anything?!Or was it just a bug when updating Vista?...if it is not a bug it is very disturbing...It would be like a program asking the permissions to scan your folders to find your mp3,and in the end, without telling you anything, moving all your mp3 to another directory!

I agree, never try to disable UAC at any conditions and I warn of using such a software like: TweakVI software as it forces you to disable it, so don't use it at all for your security. Good luck

Just to make one thing clear: TweakVI does **NOT** force a user to turn off UAC. TweakVI works without any problem with UAC enabled! This is mentioned by the setup of TweakVI, as well as when you run TweakVI for the very first time.Steve

I have the same issue with VISTA business (released product). The above fix did not help.

I am having the same problem. I upgraded to Vista Business and cannot access the My Music folder.Currently, I have an "access denied" message and am prompted to use the security tab of the folder. Although my user name is listed as the owner of the file, the message still says that "I do not have ownership."How can I access the files? How do I turn on UAC like you did to access the folder?

SPOT ON! I have been trying to delete an empty desktop folder in Windows 7 for months. Same scenario as cronosmachine describes. This is the only solution that worked. Thank you. Much appreciated.

Can I throw another solution in here that's just worked *perfectly* for me... ZTreeWin - http://www.ztree.com/html/ztreewin.htm It's on a 30 day trial and that's all I needed to solve a heap of problems with files that Windows just wouldn't touch.

1 folder unable to delete or rename, on security it said "The requested security information is either unavailable or can't be displayed". Did you try using this http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc753525%28WS.10%29.aspx to reset the folder ACLs so that you'll be then able to "access" the folder as desired ?
