Can't access admin share
Hi, Apparently you can no longer access the admin shares (c$, d$, etc). This seems to be affected by the homegroup feature which I already reported a major bug with which has been experienced by at least another user (read about it here : http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itprogeneral/thread/3d0f4143-fbc0-43f3-8170-a180e1a950ed). In the homegroup's settings you can either have Homegroup manage access to your machines or do without it and be able to access your other PCs by having the same account and password than the originating PC. I tried to enable that and nothing worked. I was asked to enter the network password, and I was denied access at every turn (even tried the usual computer\username for the username).. So I found this information about a missing registry entry called LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy which I read about here : http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/951016. Granted, this is for windows Vista and I have not tried this yet since I had to deal with my loss of of admin rights which was caused by leaving the homegroup somehow... So what I want to know, is this a bug of the HOMEGROUP feature not setting this registry key to allow access to admin shares or do we have to do something else that I have not done in order to get access to my admin shares? Thanks

I have homegorup account disabled, I have not made any additional GP or local security setting changes and I can access Admin$hares with no problem. I am running build Win7 32 build 7100 and have access this computer from my other systems running Vista Business and Vista Home Premium. With this in mind, admin shares are still allowed in Win7; this problem has to be related to sharing/security/network issue and is acually a common problem with all OSs.

Have you tried to actually enable HOMEGROUP and see what happens? Did you verify if the specified registry entry exists on your windows 7 machine? From what I gather its important to have that in order to have admin shares...

I did a clean install of my server and just installed win7 on my workstation again.. Both are part of a homegroup and as expected, I can't access my admin shares (c$, d$)... Registry key LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy missing on both ( http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/951016). Is this caused by joining a homegroup? To anyone who can access their admin shares, can you check if you have that registry key set : LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy. Thanks

I ran into similar issues. Here's a summary of my results: Pretty sure that theLocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy reg key is necessary or admin shares won't work since the credentials provided by the remote user will not be elevated to admin rights even if they're an admin on the 'sharing' machine. A & B are Win7, C is Vista With A & B in a homegroup, C could reach the admin shares on both A & B, however A & B couldn't reach the admin shares on each other. I removed A from the homegroup and B was able to reach the admin shares on A, but not vice versa. I then removed B from the Homegroup and A could reach the admin shares on B. C could still reach the admin shares on both A & B. Then I deleted theLocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy reg key on A, restarted, and neither C nor B could get to A's admin shares. So basically, and I may be wrong, if a Win7 machine is part of a Homegroup, other Win7 machines can't access it's admin shares, but non-Win7 machines can. If it's not part of a Homegroup, any machine can access it's admin shares. This is all provided that theLocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy has been added to the registry.

Have you verified that the Windows firewall is disabled in a domain environment? If you are using a 3rd party firewall like Eset Nod32 or Symantic that is most likely blocking your admin share access.

When computers are in workgroup or home group, accessing admin share in Windows 7 difficult. Firewall and local security policy settings did not help when I faced the same issue. Just change the registry key as mentioned here. It will help to access admin share in Windows 7.

Hello Ptessier, I know this is an old question, but to answer your question, I was having the same issue - I could not access my win7 laptop's C$ admin share from my win vista desktop using my laptop's local admin account. I found the localaccounttokenfilterpolicy on another site, and cross referenced it to your question, and then tried it myself. Everything is working fine now after adding that key in win7; I didn't even need to restart. Homegroup settings have not been affected by the registry modification; the win7 laptop is homegrouped with one other win7 laptop. If I were you; I'd mark this question fixed; it seems that you solved your own question. :)
