Can't Start HomeGroup Listener Service, Windows 7 Home Premium x64
Hello, I've been having some network related problems, and I think that it's because the service "HomeGroup Listener" can't start... (Problems such as not being able to "play to", bot being able to start/join a HomeGroup, etc) When I try to start the service, this is what I get in the Event Viewer - The HomeGroup Listener service terminated with service-specific error %%-2147467262. I searched on-line, and found few mentions about the Windows Firewall service, but on my system it's enabled and running. I tried copying the registary values of that service from another, working machine, but with no success. I *think* it's something to do with registary permissions, but not sure how to check that, and where to check if it's not the right one... I tried creating a new admin user, but it didn't help eithar The only security software I use is MSE, nothing else. Would be happy to get any ideas/help, and provide any other information needed. Thanks a lot, Elan

Hi, To troubleshoot the issue, please perform the following steps. 1. Assure the Server service is started. 2. Temporarily turn off firewall and antivirus program, and then verify the problematic service again. 3. Leave HomeGroup completely and start the service again. a. Click the Start Button, type "cmd" (without quotation marks), in the search result list, right click on Cmd.exe and select Run as administrator. Note: If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue. b. In the popup window, type the following commands and press Enter one by one: Net stop p2pimsvc 2. Access t he following folder and clear all files inside: C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Roaming\PeerNetworking 3. Click the Start Button, type "cmd" (without quotation marks), in the search result list, right click on Cmd.exe and select Run as administrator. Net start p2pimsvc Hope this helps. Novak

Hey Novak, thank you for your time... :) I tried doing as offered, but sadly it didn't help. Also, I can't "leave the homegroup" as I'm not joined to a one, Windows won't let me (It says "HomeGroup isn't ready"). Even with firewall/MSE turned off, the service didn't start. Here's what I get, when I try to start the service using the "services" MMC - Windows could not start the HomeGroup Listener on Local Computer. For more information, review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service-specific error code -2147467262 Any idea ? Thanks a lot, Elan

Hi, Please also try the following steps for a test. 1. Run System File Checker (SFC) to verify whether any system file is corrupted. When scanning is completed, please verify the service again. If the issue persists, please move on the next step to perform an In-Place Upgrade which can repair the system files. 2. In-Place upgrade (Repair install) a. Start the computer by using the current Operating System. b. Insert the Windows 7 DVD in the computer's DVD drive. c. Use one of the following procedures, as appropriate: If Windows automatically detects the DVD, the Install now screen appears. Click Install now. If Windows does not automatically detect the DVD, follow these steps: d. Click the Start Button, type Drive:\setup.exe in the start search box and then click OK. Note: Drive is the drive letter of the computer's DVD drive. e. Click Install now. f. When you reach the "Which type of installation do you want?" screen, click Upgrade to upgrade the current operating system to Windows 7. Hope this helps. Novak

Hey Novak, SFC couldn't find any corrupted files, so I went with the repair install. It took some time to finish, but it fixed all of the problems. To be honest, I hesitated doing that, as I didn't want to re-install and re-set all of my software, but I was surprised with how good the Windows 7 Repair is, it really kept everything - I only had to reinstall one software (Virtual CD Drive). While I still don't know what caused the problem to begin with, I'm happy that everything is OK now. Thank you for your time! Elan
