Can't Network 2 Vista Computers on the LAN side of my Network...
Can someone please help. I've tried everything possible that I can think of and have run out ideas. I've never had any problems networking computers before until now, and I'm kinda thinking itsa bug with Vista. Here's the scenario... (2) new computers, installed clean full versions of Vista Ultimate. Both computers are hardwired, ethernet Cat5, to my Netopia DSL Modem provided by AT&T (This connection sucks, but its the only service provider I can get in my area.) NOTE: Systems previously ran Media Center 2005 and had no problems networking together. Anyways, I pull up the network map on both systems and can see each computer listed on the tree. However, when I try to map a network drive, it keeps coming up with an error about a DNS/Network path not found. I've tried everything, however it looks like Vista is searching for my local computers on the internet side of the network and not locally.?.?.? Both computers can ping themselves, the router, modem, and outside websites sucessfully. However, when I try to ping from 1 computer to the other on the LAN, its unsuccessful.Seems like the router is blocking communication between computers on the LAN side, however the only thing that has changed is upgrading from Media Center Edition to Vista which leads me to believe that itsa Vista problem. Everything else remains the same. Does this make any sense to anyone? I need to have these computers talking to each asap because its keeping me from operating my business (Quickbooks specifically.) Any help would be great. BTW, I purchased a book, "Windows Vista, Inside Out" ISBN #0-7356-2270-1, and went through chapter 14 start to finish and still had no sucess. Thank you for your help.

I have a similar problem. I have 2 Ultimate PCs with static IPs, I have reduced the protocols to Windows Client, File/Print Sharing, IP4. Network discovery is on, the PCs show up, but only 1 can access the other. It was almost automatic to set up in XP home or pro. I have posted to several newsgroups, with no response. I will try Home Premium next, then back to XP, or Linux. This is really frustrating. It is odd that both PCs can access the Internet.....
