Can't Map Network Drive on Vista
Hi, Looking for some help on this. Vista giving the error message of "The parameter is incorrect" after trying to map a network drive. My prev laptop was Win XP, mapped no problems at all while being on it's own network workgroup. New laptop is Vista, I can get network connectivity, I can access all network based applications and get trough to the internet, can also ping various IP addie acros the network, but cannot setup a mapped drive for the same location as prev used on Win XP laptop. The Vista machine is also on it's own workgroup. Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

If the computers are not in the same workgroup you will need to map the drive using the IP address of machine with share on it. (\\192.168.1.2\sharename)

Hi Moanie, Thank you for the post. To perform further research on the issue, I would like to confirm the following information with you: 1. What is the exact wording of the error message? Would you please capture the error message? 2. Is the share folder shared on a Windows system? Can you map network drive for other share folders on this Windows Vista laptop? Meanwhile, please try to map network drive by using IP address as paosberg mentioned. In addition, Ive listed the following article for your reference: File and Printer Sharing in Windows Vista http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727037.aspx Hope it helps. I look forward to your reply. Sincerely, Joson Zhou Microsoft Online Community Support

I had the same problem! Found out this solution: in Windows Vista, avter having enabled every sharing option for files and printers go to "Drive C properties", select advanced sharing and share with "C" letter, after this, on the XP machine, you'll be able to map, for example \\10.10.10.20\C where 10.10.10.20 is the Vista IP address. It's not the same as before when we used to map \\10.10.10.20\c$ but it works... Hope to be helpful.

Procedure to map drives even after reboot in Vista: Im Austrian so i hope you will understand my english: Go to Computer (my computer or where you can see all the Drives and CD...) Right mousebutton to a free space and click "add Netrecource ore Networkplace or however" take User designed Networkplace OK Typein the ip adresse of the server and the shared directoryname example \\192.168.0.10\hd_d You can giva a name but you do not have to, just let it as it is you will erease it anyway. Type in the your servers-account username and password. klick done. so you now have a directory-link Sostartnow the add-Netdrive procedure, finde a free Netdrive-Letter and take the pull down directory menu. You will find our directory-link: \\192.168.0.10\hd_d Mark it and go direktly to de finish button or done (dont know how it lokslike on a englishl-speaks pc). Do this Procedure for each Networkdrive you want to map but after the 1st drive the Server remembers the Server-account name and Password so you have to click Username and Pass by adding the Networkdirveletter. If you have finished you have torestart the PC to make sure it stores in registry. After the reboot, all the Net-drive letters as well as the direktory links should appear, be connected. Now you can remove the directory-links and rename the added drives as you please. Good luck; Hubert Heiss Compuvos 03-2008 :-)

Hello I have a network drive which I am having problems with mapping across since I have reinstalled Windows Vista Home. After reading some forums, it seems that the problem does occur when a user name is changed. Every time I reboot the PC, the system tray identifies the Drive and if I open the drive browser, I can see all my files. But I cannot map the drive across - this means when I select Map Drive from Explorer, the NAS does not show. I have keyed in my user name and password, but that does not work either. If I open the drive configuration window, it has an exclamation mark on SMB file sharing. Other things: I have selected file sharing from my networking options and I have even closed my firewall. My Device Manager is showing that everything is fine, although at the beginning there was a driver missing for SMB controller, which I have consequently rectified. I have even tried mapping the drive using IP address, but this does not work. Thanks in advance for any help.

It may be wokring but this really isn't a fix. What if you have programs that only use \\computername to connect to the remote machine. The IP address may work, but I have seen this issue countless times over the years using windows. How do you fix the user account so that it resolves by name instead of ip address?
