Can't Join Lync Meetings in Outlook 2013 with Lync 2013

Hello,

I'm having an odd problem with joining Lync meetings in Outlook 2013 using Lync 2013 and hope there is an answer out there.  When I click on Join Lync Meeting in Outlook I receive this error:

"We're sorry, but Lync has run into an error that is preventing it from working correctly.  Lync will need to be closed as a result. Would you like us to repair now?"

Both Outlook and Lync are 2013 32-Bit.  I tried everything including uninstalling quick and full repair of both Office and Lync.  Then I uninstalled and reinstalled both Office and Lync. Then I tried using new mail profiles under a new user account with no luck. Then I formatted the drive and did a fresh install of Windows 8 with only Office and Lync installed and it is still happening.

I can join or start the meeting if I copy and paste the Join link into IE, but I can't click through from Outlook.

I have the exact same setup on another PC that this is working fine but I never messed with anything just did default installs.

Any ideas?

Check the Application and System Event logs on that PC, they should reveal an error code that usually might point to a driver issue.

Also make sure that both Lync and Outlook (Office) has the latest updates.

Ok, I tried a fresh windows 8 install using 64-bit outlook 2013 and 64-bit Lync 2013 and same result.

Then did another fresh windows 8 install, installed Outlook 2013 32-bit and Lync 2010 client 32-bit and the Lync 2010 client is working fine, I can join meetings right from Outlook without having to copy/paste the link to IE.

Guess I'll use the 2010 Lync Client for now.

Hi,

Were there any other issues between Lync client and Outlook? Can you see Conversation History on Outlook normally?

Please press Ctrl and right click Lync icon in the taskbar, open configuration information. On the open page check if EWS status and MAPI status are OK.

Please also try to disable the Add-Ins of Lync Meeting Add-in for Microsoft Office 2013, restart Lync client and Outlook and then enable the Add-Ins again to test.

Best Regards,

Eason Huang

The problem may be related with the installation package for office 2013. The lync 2013 seems not installed correctly.

Did you ever solve this problem?  Looks like Micrsoft Tech support was not very helpful in this thread and did not really anser to isuse, even though it is marked as answered.

I have exactly the same problem.  Whenever I click the Lync URL in the Outlook 2013 calendar entry, it gives the "We're sorry, but Lync has run into an error that is preventing it from working correctly.  Lync will need to be closed as a result. Would you like us to repair now?" " message.

I can copy the URL out of the Outlook Calendar entry and paste it into a browser and join a Lync meeting that way.

Have tried reinstalling both Office 2013 and Lync 2013  couple times to no avail.

What a pain!

Seems to be something with Lync meeting add-in. If I disable it, then I can click from calendar entry and get to a meeting without error (of course, then I can't easily make a new meeting a Lync meeting is add-in is turned off and Lync button doesn't appear when creating a new meeting).

We are having the same issue. Don't see a good answer. On a 64 bit Windows 8.1 Office 2013 64 bit computer, the copy/paste of the URL is NOT working. So we don't have a workaround for one of our users.

I was able to tell the user to copy the hyperlink in the Outlook meeting, paste it into a browser but then add the tag ? sl=1.  This will open up the meeting in the browser.  I'm not sure about the .netframework security?

I just bought a new laptop. Win 8 - 64bit.  Also bought and installed Office 2013 and also Lync 2013.

When in Outlook - I press Join Lync Meeting, or press the link in the Calendar event.   I get the dreaded..."We're sorry, but Lync has run into an error that is preventing it from working correctly. Lync will need to be closed as a result. Would you like us to repair now?

And nothing seems to fix the issue, reinstalled everything, Office and Lync.  Also played with the Outlook Add-In too - removing and adding.  I made sure all MS Updates were installed.

Event Log shows the following, similar as mentioned above.

What does work... as a work-around... 1) Right Click and select Copy Hyperlink and paste into ANY browser, and Lync pops up in the Lync Online Meeting with no issues.  (or select the Hyperlink and paste into any browser)

I can't figure out what is wrong.  Please Help.

I've got the same problem, w8.1, office 2013, lync 2013. My problem occurred after the update in September-October sometimes. If I rollback my computer to before that, all works fine. So one solution is to roll it back and stop all updates...

I see that this thread has been going on for a year now with no solution in hand and users, myself included still unable to have good use of the "integration" between Outlook and Lync.

Me: 8.1, Office 2013, Lync 2013 64-bit.  I have tried disabling the add-in as was suggested somewhere above, this DOES allow me to join a meeting via an invite.  Huge inconvenience however because I cannot create a Lync meeting invite via Outlook without "toggling" the Add-in back on.

HOWEVER, the best work around I have come up with (at least it works for me and I hope it provides some relief for others until a real fix comes through) is this: Use the Lync client to join the meeting (instead of Outlook).  In Lync, go to the meetings icon, badge, charm or whatever it is being called this year and join the scheduled meeting from here.  This way I have been able to keep the Add-in enabled so while I cannot join from the Outlook Calendar but can still create and send Lync meetings via Outlook Calendar.  What a pain, but it is working for me.

My thinking is that the issue has more to do with Outlook, the Outlook Calendar and the Add-in than the Lync client itself.  But that's just a guess based on what I have done to workaround the flawed integration.

I have come up with some other "workarounds" for those brave enough to download the Lync Version form the 8.1 Windows store . . . so if you're bold, try downloading that and add to the mix!

January 24th, 2015 2:34am

I have the same issue.

Copying the url into the browser starts the meeting. So, I disabled the Lync addin in outlook and then tried clicking the link. That doesn't work.

So, I changed the default browser to chrome and tried again.

Now the meeting dialog is opened in chrome and I can start the meeting (yes, I do have some opened browser windows, but it works)

Unfortunately, I cannot invite people to lync meetings with my addin disabled, but it should be useful info for the Microsoft product team...

January 28th, 2015 8:44pm

I copy the Lync-link into a browser to join a meeting. This works when the link is included in the invitation, but sometimes the only way to join is to click on the lync Icon in the ribbon and then I'm stuck.

Today I traced a successful startup from the browser, and a failed one from Outlook. The differences between the environment Outlook hands overto Lync (which failes)  compared to what IE hands over are:

Outlook (fails):
CommonProgramFiles=C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files
PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE=x86
 PROCESSOR_ARCHITEW6432=AMD64
ProgramFiles=C:\Program Files (x86)

IE (ok):
CommonProgramFiles=C:\Program Files\Common Files
PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE=AMD64
ProgramFiles=C:\Program Files

I.e. it looks as Outlook don't use the defined system environment, and instead creates one that unfortunately looks faulty.

I hope this can help MS to get this one sorted...

January 28th, 2015 9:53pm

I'm not expecting this one to get sorted, due to the fact that somebody has come along and marked this question as answered - even though the solution is to downgrade to Lync 2010.

In response to peterprog's suggestion - children applications always inherit the same environment variables as their parents, so Lync.exe will have the same environment variables as outlook.exe - when clicking the link from outlook.  Lync.exe will have the same environment variables as Windows Explorer when opening the link from IE or Windows Run prompt.  I don't believe the difference in environment variables is the cause of the issue.

This looks like it's going to be one of those problems we're going to have to live with until the issue is actually raised with Microsoft support, which will require somebody spending some money to raise a ticket.

My environment:

Surface Pro 3
Windows 8.1
Microsoft Office Home and Business 2013
Lync 2013 Basic (yes, I've tried all different sorts, asll well as reinstalling to no avail)

 I am simply trying to understand the effectiveness and value of these forums and am not understanding how this work around answers the integration issues between Lync 2013 and Outlook 2013?

I would like to assume that Microsoft had intended for Outlook 2013 and Lync 2013 to work together in a more seamless fashion and that expecting users to figure out on their own that in order to have a user experience that is good is to downgrade to an earlier version of Lync.  I would be challenged to think that's part of product roll-out plan.  I am unclear how this is flagged as an answer addressing to the issue? Why is a work around considered an answer and flagged as such by a Moderator?

February 12th, 2015 11:16am

I just got my working on Windows 8.1.  Look at your "Programs and Features" and see that you are not using Lync 2013 basic.  I updated my Office 2013 to the company licences which gives you the full version of Lync 2013 and not the basic mode.  Once I reloaded Office 2013 company licenses it all started to work.  At first I had my home office365 which does not give you the full version of Lync 2013.  I hope that helps others.

Windows 8.1, 64-bit Office 2013 Professional Plus

Bittersweet to hear that it may have to do with a licensing conflict.  However, this makes some sense, but only amplifies my frustration.

I've purchased a license for Office 2013 Professional Plus which is supposed to come with Lync 2013 (the main reason I pursued the "Plus" version).  When I installed the suite, Lync did not install and the way the installers currently work (unlike to old days) I was never provided an opportunity to "select" installing Lync - the installer just decided what to install (based on my Microsoft ID I guess).  I assume that there was some determination by the installer that I did not need Lync, maybe it checks to see if I use 365 or something like that?

In any case, I do subscribe and PAY for Lync through one of Microsoft's Lync providers.  Since the Office installer wouldn't install Lync, I reached out to my provider who had to set up an FTP site to upload the client for me to download to install, which I did.  It has it's own license (distribution via the Lync provider) and does show up as a separate item under the Programs list, but not "basic" as Mark pointed to above.  My version shows up under Programs as "Microsoft Lync 2013" right above "Microsoft Office Professional 2013".

I have tried using the "repair" feature for both installers, nothing has changed.  I have tried contacting Microsoft for support and after the better part of an afternoon speaking to folks from the "Office" group who shared that Lync is a "Windows" product so they couldn't help, then speaking with "Windows" product folks who said that since it was a product added to the "Office" suite, they couldn't help and so on, I pretty much gave up on expecting any help.

Summarily, I would very much like for Lync 2013 to integrate correctly with Outlook 2013 and would like for Microsoft (either/both "Office" team or "Windows" team to help make the user experience better.

If anyone has any idea how I might be able to use the Office installer to install Lync (as I thought it should since I paid for it and is why I got the "Professional Plus" version in the first place) I would appreciate your guidance.

Agree that children normally inherits the same environment as the parent, unless the parent decides to pass on some other for some reason. The reason I believe the problem is in the environment is that if I disables the lync plugin, Outlook starts IE which starts lync. This works fine if I've started IE in advance and the lync-linc is started in a new tab, but if it is Outlook starts IE, IE will fail starting lync. So depending on how IE is started, it can either succeed or fail. My conclusion: if lync looks in the wrong directory for some dll, it fails.

I had the same thing.  Office 365 home but a professional Volume License copy of lync.  Suddenly couldn't join any meetings.  So I reinstalled over the top both office 2013 and lync 2013, with the volume license version of the software, and lync no longer gets the error.  Guess MSFT never thought about the scenario...

Hi

Just wanted to share our problem and solution.

We buy Office Home & Business with our PCs because it's cheaper, and we have Lync on premises.

Recently some users started receiving this error. We tried alot of things but couldn't fix it, so we decided to create a case with Microsoft.

Now before i continue i want to explain something. There are two types of office:
Click-to-run - This installs from the internet and is meant for private customers.
MSI - This installs the good old fasioned way and is meant for businesses.

Microsoft told us that our office installations is a click-to-run installation and our Lync is a msi installation and running two different installations is not supported (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2753630), so we should contact our local Microsoft support.

So i called our local Microsoft support. After two calls and getting transfered a few times we got this conclusion:

Office Home & Business is only available in a click-to-run installation and a Lync Retail (the click-to-run version of Lync) requires a new licens. So we were scr*wed.
Note: Lync Basic is free but has limited features and was therefore not a solution.

After experimenting with a lot of things we found out that the problem only occured on one model (Dell Latitude E7440). If we installed Lync Basic click-to-run it worked. If we moved the harddrive to another model it worked. So it must be something driver/device and click-to-run that is causing it.

That's what we found out, but the solution was a whole other thing.

Normally you cannot activate Lync Retail with a volume licens that you get from VLSC, but we found out that if you install the lync version from vlsc first and then install the lync retail version afterwards without uninstalling the vlsc version, then it is either already activated or you can activate it with a volume licens.

-

Solution:
Install Office Home & Business.
Install Lync.
Install Lync Retail (You can get this from the office single image on oem.microsoft.com)
If it asks for a licens then you can now activate it with a licens from VLSC.

The most annoing problem i have ever encountered.

Solution:
Install Office Home & Business.
Install Lync.
Install Lync Retail (You can get this from the office single image on oem.microsoft.com)
If it asks for a licens then you can now activate it with a licens from VLSC.

The most annoing problem i have ever encountered.

This workaround is better than the cut and paste option.  I was able to join the meeting directly from the Lync client.  Thanks for the tip.

To Microsoft Community:

I am having the same problem when trying to join an on-line Lync meeting from Outlook, message "We are sorry Lync has run into an error that is preventing it from working properly .......'

Laptop: Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro, MS Lync 2013, Win 8.1, Office 365

It does not appear that Microsoft is any closer to a solution for this problem.

I've now got used to my workaround, but I do not understand why MS does not do anything about it. The problem is the environment office transfers when starting up a new program, which for some reason is faulty. So I always have the lync plugin deactivated, and before clicking om a lync-link in an invitation I start up IE from the desktop. Then the click will start via IE that will start lync. This Always works. If I forget to start IE in advance, office starts IE and IE fails to start lync with the well-known fail message. Then it is just to close IE and restart it manually, then the start of lync will work. The only time I need to enable the lync plugin is when I need to add a lync session to an own invitation, but then I disables it directly afterwards.

If MS wonders why Apple seem to increase their markeshare as they do, it is not because they have so much better products, it is because they fix the annoying faults when they are detected...
