Can't Install IE9, and only IE9
I am running Windows 7 Pro, 64-bit. 8GB RAM. I am able to successfully install all other windows updates except IE9. I keep getting a code error 80042009. I tried following the troubleshooter in the message that pops up.
Here is what I have tried up to this point.
1. Download the IE9 Full installer, same error fails about the 50% mark.
2. Verify no other updates pending. All other updates successful, even service pack 1 for Windows 7..After SP1, IE9 still fails to install
3. Performed full system scan, no maleware or virus.
4. Uninstalled both Symantec Endpoint and Spybot, IE9 Install still fails.
5. Verified that Windows Firewall is enabled., IE9 install still fails.
Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hi Phill,
Have you tried to install IE 9 from a different user account?

Actually I have not as there is just the one account, besides the administrator account. I have tried "run as" but having the same results. I will log in tonight and try that..if necessary I will create a second account if the admin account will not work.
In addition someone mentioned possibly disabling all addons to IE...

Hi,
Please install IE9 in
clean boot and reset the current IE. I would like to share
following KB to troubleshoot the issue. If IE9 fails again, please upload C:\Windows\IE9_main.log to
SkyDrive
or paste here for further research.

Performed a clean boot. Tried a install after clean boot. Still same failure. I went ahead and disabled Symantec Endpoint..same failure. Here is the IE9_main.log. The only update waiting in Windows update is IE9..all other updates have successfully installed.

Thanks Niki, I tried that myself but it didn't work. I have been trying to install IE9 (and 7 SP1) for over a year now. I think it's due to the fact that I upgraded from Vista rather than clean installing. I have tried everything I can
think of and everything I can find, and it absolutely refuses to work.

I'm baffled. I gave up on this. I've tried everything and nothing worked. I just started using Firefox. I've applied multiple updates since then and IE would always faile. However, over this weekend IE9 installed successfully on its own as part of the automatic
updates.
I have no clue as to why it would now update and install just fine.. I was having this issue for 6 months. Now it installed just fine..
