CMOS Battery Failure?
I apologize if this is not the correct forum, My computer has worked fine until I opened the case to install a case fan on the top. After in-stallion, I powered the PC back up and got an error message on the BIOs screen saying: "CMOS Battery Low" and "CMOS Date/Time Not Set". I set the date and time and continued as normal. Everything is fine except I can no longer see any icons in the notification area. On some advice, I kept the PC running for 24 hours to charge the CMOS battery, and finally restarted the PC due to a system update from Microsoft. The PC turned back on, but I couldn't see anything from the monitor, and did not hear the 'beep' from the motherboard. I made sure it wasn't my graphics card by swapping, which did nothing. I replaced the CMOS battery with a new one, and powered the PC back on and I got the same two error messages at the BIOs screen. After which I continued to logon no problems, however I still can not see my notification area. What happened to the PC?? What do I need to do to fix this problem? Any support would be appreciated.

Hello, I am guessing that by notification are you are referring to the POST screen when you first turn on the PC? Or do you mean the icon tray after Windows desktop is displayed? The POST can be controlled from within the BIOS. If you changed your battery, your probably back to default settings. Go into your BIOS and disable quick boot and you will get your post back. Sorry I guess my description was a little vague. By notification area I do in fact mean the icon tray on the desktop.

So you have no icons in there or the time/date is missing? What OS do you have? I everything else working normally?Miguel Fra / Falcon IT Services Computer & Network Support, Miami, FL Visit our Knowledgebase and Support Sharepoint Site

Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit. Everything seems to be working fine. I had to manually correct the date and time. The only icons showing are the volume icon and I have Norton installed. The other icons seem to be there, but I can't see them. Like, the spaces are there, even though i can not interact with them. Left clicking or right clicking the 'blank' spaces does nothing.

Thanks for the replies, I can not restart the computer because it will no longer boot properly until I put another fresh CMOS battery in. The first died, the second died after I attempted to restart the PC, and my third battery died while I was checking the BIOS settings. Even after I set all of the settings, it would not save those settings, reset and give me the same error messages. Instead of burning through more CMOS batteries, I ordered a replacement motherboard, since the one I have discharges the cmos battery within a couple seconds.

Hi, Restart the computer and enter into the Safe Mode, check if the issue persists. Do you have a backup? I think a system restore is easier to fix this kind of issue. Based on your description, it seems a hardware issue.
