CHKDSK runs whenever I turn on the computer
How can I stop the CHKDSK utility from running every time I turn on the computer? I'm using Windows XP.

This may work, in a Run window (Windows key+R), type cmd and press Enter, now type CHKNTFS /D (the capitals are for clarity only) and press Enter.Alternatively, go to a Run window (Windows key+R), type regedit and press Enter. In the left pane navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager. In the right pane double-click BootExecute and change the value from something like ‘autocheck autochk * /p \??\C:’ to ‘autocheck autochk *’ (not the quotation marks). Create a system restore point before changing any registry entries.

I tried both of the suggested solutions, but CHKDSK still runs at start up. Any other ideas?

I tried both of the suggested solutions, but CHKDSK still runs at start up. Any other ideas?Method 1: Remove the Chkdsk.exe or the Autochk.exe program from Scheduled TasksFollow these steps to remove the Chkdsk.exe or the Autochk.exe program from the list of scheduled tasks in the Scheduled Tasks feature. 1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Scheduled Tasks. 2. Click either Chkdsk or Autochk in the list of scheduled tasks. 3. Under Folder Tasks, click Delete this itemMethod 2: Check the Session Manager registry entryImportant This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:322756 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756/ ) How to back up and restore the registry in WindowsFollow these steps, and then quit Registry Editor: 1. Click Start, click Run , type regedit , and then click OK. 2. Locate and then click the following key in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\BootExecute 3. On the Edit menu, click Modify. 4. Type autocheck autochk * , and then press ENTER.Chkdsk Runs Each Time That You Start Your Computer http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;316506&FR=1&PA=1&SD=HSCHnass -- http://www.nasstec.co.uk

No success with either method.Method #1 - Chkdsk and Autochk weren't in the list of scheduled tasks so there was nothing for me to delete.Method #2 - Registry was already set to 'autocheck autochk *' (without quotation marks). What else can you suggest I try?

I upgraded to Windows 7, and the issue hasn't recurred.
