CHKDSK/F not fixing chkdsk
When I run Chkdsk on bootable disk it reports errors. Chkdsk/f at boot says clean and disk utilities say disks are ok. Chkdsk then reports "errors in the vol bit map etc." How do you fix this? It is happening on more than one computer and I have not seen this before last couple of mo. xp pro with sp3. Hardware expert said to scrap the hard disk and get a new one from him and software expert said scrap sp3, turn off automatic updates, ignore errors and get software from him. Before I take up either of these two enterprising "computer experts" I need a third opinion. Thank you in advance.1 person needs an answerI do too

Ok everybody of over 50 who have looked at this in last day. Where is your opinion? I could not wait so software guy says as long as I keep automatic updates turned off, I should not have any more problems with Windows and as long as the 5 year warranty is in force I should not have any more problems with drive, but what do I do with the other computers that are experiencing the same xp pro sp3 problem? Any opinions at all? I never saw this problem with xp until last few months.

My dear Coork, I thank you for venturing forth with your opinion into an area where all others failed to go. Unfortunately, your suggestion made no difference whatsoever. The error persists “”errors in the volume bitmap”. Do you or anyone have a better solution? I do thank you for your other suggestion to keep updates, however the “software expert’s” suggestion has not been disproved.

Coork, thanks again for the suggestion. Console CHKDSK /R ran and corrected at least one error. Then Win xp pro sp3 ran and reported "errors in the volume bitmap". This is on a Seagate disk that Seagate reports as 100% functioning on all tests. It is also happening on at least 3 other boot disks. All data disks are fine. I got mysteriously referred to "whatthetech" where a thread discussed someone else getting the same error message. His hardware was also completely intact. I had my hardware independently checked and it is also completely intact. This means that it is xp pro sp3 that is generating the errors. How do you fix this?

Coork, thanks for the excellent suggestion. Unfortunately, sfc /scannow verifies all xp files. All hard disk and memory tests clear the hardware of any problems on all computers. On the computer that I FDISK, striped, low format, verified, high format and reloaded xp, the error "errors in volume bitmap" recurred after I plugged back into the internet. It, on this computer, is intermittent. CHKDSK=error. Then I do nothing. CHKDSK= no error. Then I do nothing. Then CHKDSK=error. The errors just persist on the others.

Coork, I made a discovery. The errors only appear when the computer is plugged into the internet. Maybe that is why they always appeared on all the other computers. They are always plugged into the internet. On the test computer I have been describing, it only generates the error when it is plugged into the internet. When unplugged it never gives an error. How do you fix this???????? Just a curiosity, but how does Windows know the name of my network? All other times I had to tell it it wasn't "WORKGROUP", but now it automatically plugged it in during reload of XP on test computer after FDISK, striping, low format, verify and high format. I know it did not get it from the hard drive.

Coork, thanks for the suggestions. This is sp3+++++++++++++++++++ with auto update turned on. It has Windows Essentials turned on and I manually scan it daily with a daily updated manual scanner. Ie8+++++++++++ is also running. Another curiosity. Why does XP immediately turn off the firewall that you have to turn on manually after initial install and how do you stop XP from doing that?
