CD/DVD Drive just opens CD to show files without reading the INF file to autorun
I have been making autoplay PowerPoint presentations for many years now using Office 2003 then 2007 and now 2010. The latest presentations I have made will not autoplay. I thought it was something to do with Office 2010 so I have been in exhaustive exercises with your Office support staff to no avail. I have rewritten the Autorun.INF many different ways according to their instructions without success. I thought to compare the INF file of an old 2003 CD that I had packaged for CD using the PP2003 package for CD wizard and was successful enough to send around the world to friends. This will now not play. I came to the conclusion that something must have gone amiss in my desktop PC CD/DVD drive until I thought that I would confirm that and run it on my laptop. This also has Windows XP and ran the drive successfully as well but now it doesn't. This seems to much of coincidence that both CD players have broken at the same time so I thought that perhaps an update in Windows XP might have done this? Is this the case and if so how can I get back to where I was a couple of years ago? Music CDs play OK but even propriety program data discs need to be manually run from My Computer, not what I want. Please help? Thanks

Hi DebleenaThanks for this help We are moving forward. Now the CD auotplays up to the point that it will just open the files on the CD. It used to play the PP presentation OK on this machine and I have done nothing that I am aware of to change this. All of the files are there but it would be good if the autoplay would use the INF file and run the presentation?I copy the log from the fix for your observations and comments.ThanksCharlie AutoFix [V5.2.3790.67]Time [2011-01-13 09:17:38]Microsoft Windows Version [5.1 (Service Pack 3) <2600>]Test [The Shell Hardware Detection service is running.] - Instance [N/A]: Result [AutoStart Setting]: OK Result [The Shell Hardware Detection service is running.]: OKTest [Policies] - Instance [D:\, Drive Type: 5]: Result [HKCU\...\Policies!NoDrives]: OK {Present} Result [HKCU\...\Policies!NoDriveAutorun]: OK {Present} Result [HKCU\...\Policies!NoDriveTypeAutorun]: OK {Present} Result [HKLM\...\Policies!NoDrives]: OK {Present} Result [HKLM\...\Policies!NoDriveAutorun]: OK {Present} Result [HKLM\...\Policies!NoDriveTypeAutorun]: OK {Present} Result [Driver level policies]: OK { HKLM\...\Services\cdrom!Autorun (Present) <Allows> HKLM\...\Services\cdrom\Parameters!Autorun (Absent) <Allows> HKLM\System\CCS\Enum\...!AlwaysEnable (Absent) <Not set> HKLM\System\CCS\Enum\...!AlwaysDisable (Absent) <Not set> }Test [Drive Notification] - Instance [D:\, Drive Type: 5]: Result [Legacy Notification]: OK Result [AutoPlay V2 Notification]: Problems { Service (Silent) Shell (Deaf) } >> Repair << [Autoplay V2 Event] Step: No steps to take. I right clicked on the CD drive in my computer go into Properties and choose the Autoplay tab. There were several options for different types of CD/DVD but none them gave the impression of being ale to do something to autoplay a CD rather than just open the files. I have tried to click on the Reset Default setting for all options but it seems to do nothing but again open the CD to show the files or tracks if it is an audio CD. I would like it to play an audio CD or run a PowerPoint presentation rather that just show me the files. The INF file is there with all of the correct information in fact I can put in a CD that I made several years ago that I know used to autoplay but now it doesn't. Say for instance I choose iTunes to play an audio CD it runs but then just opens the iTunes and show me the tracks it used to play. I downloaded and ran the MS CD Autoplay Repair Wizard and when I put the CD in to do the diagnostics it just showed me the tracks on iTunes. I finished the diagnostics and copied the log for your perusal. I hope it means more to you than it does to me? One of the bottom lines of the log is worrying as it says "Result: This AutoPlay setting cannot be fixed. Either the device is malfunctioning, or the wizard cannot determine the problem".Yes that just about sums it up. I am willing to edit the registry to whatever you want but I need you to tell me how to get into the registry editing mode? I am the administrator. I have nothing to do with Roxio or Real Player on my machine. Just to say that whatever has happened to my desktop PC to make this happen has also happened to my laptop. I use my laptop for emails only and have not downloaded any programs on to it that could affect its working so I feel that this is something that has come with an XP service pack that has done the same to both machines? Hi charlie3110,Did you make any software or hardware changes on your machine prior to this issue?Let’s follow these methods & check if it helps.Method 1You may also hold down the Shift key when you insert devices or media into your computer to open AutoPlay, regardless of the default setting.Method 2You may remove and reinstall the existing DVD/CD-ROM drivers. Thereafter, check if the issue persists. To do this, follow these steps:a. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.b. Click System and Security, click System, and then click Device Manager.Note: If Control Panel is in Classic View, double-click System, and then click Device Manager.c. In Device Manager, expand DVD/CD-ROM drives, right-click the CD and DVD devices, and then click Uninstall (Put a check for the option remove all driver software/files).When you are prompted to confirm that you want to remove the device, click OK.d. Restart the computer.Install the drivers.Hope the information helps. Hi DebleenaOn the hold the shift and it will play method then it didn't. The CD player whirred for about 20 secs then stopped so I uni-stalled the driver and rebooted and then put in an audio CD. It offered me some options to play and I chose the one I liked and all was well. Great.I am now back where I was a few weeks ago when I first started chatting with Steve Rinsburg about getting a PowerPoint presentation to auto play. I put in an old 2003 packaged for CD that I knew used to autoplay and it just opened to show all of the files and then stopped. It does not seem to see the INF file that would make it run, it used to. I also put in a packaged for CD that I have just made with PP 2010 and got the same result. Is there something that I can do to make these CD run the INF files and autoplay? Thanks any wayCharlie

Hi,What is the extension of the PowerPoint presentation? Is it .ppt/.pps/.pptx/.ppsx?It seems the PowerPoint viewer handlers are corrupt and may need to be repaired. You may try to repair the Microsoft Office application and check if the issue persists. For more information, refer this link: Automatically repair Office programsNote: The article is for Microsoft 2003/2007 however it’s also applicable for 2010 version.Hope the information helps. HiI have a CD that I made with PP 2003 that used to play automatically at that time. The extension on that one is .pps. I have another one that I have made recently with PP 2010 and the extension on that one is a .ppsx. I downloaded a new version of PP player under the direction of Steve Rinsberg but that made no difference. In both cases the CD opens to show me the files but does not read/run the INF file.I will try to use your link to Automatically repair Office Programs and see what happens.I did custom load PP from my 2003 and 2007 Office discs to see if that would help but it did not. Would this conflict shall I uninstall them?thanksCharlie
