Bug reports; compilation: Hardware: Fan Controller; Internal Hard Drive detection; Desktop Background Shuffle
I was directed to put bug reports in this thread, so here is a compilation of 3 reports previously made at: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproperf/thread/5e1f7e54-6e41-40e2-9f77-129a700d1057 http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprohardware/thread/cbb2128d-1919-49b5-9f11-a8a9a0d4a3a5/ http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproui/thread/6c4edbde-7953-4e77-a1b6-fbe6e4b6e91d/ Specs: System is Canadian model: Toshiba Satellite L300D (PSLC8C-04401R) Updated to most recent BIOS version available through manufacturer AMD Athlon X2 64-bit dual core w/ 4 GB RAM, running 64-bit W7RC7100 ATI Mobility Radeon 3100, using Catalyst 9.5 for W7 drivers Running W7RC7100-64bit, Previously running Vista SPx (Whichever was most recent through MSUpdate) PROBLEM #1: Windows 7 disrupts system cooling behaviour -Prior to the installation of W7RC, the laptop cooled itself appropriately. --I played Mass Effect, a 3d game, during which the fan would run at speed, blowing hot air. --Otherwise it would kick up occasionally during load for a couple minutes at a time. -Since the installation of W7RC, the fan will, after a certain period of use, engage at full speed and blow COOL air, even with CPU usage at 0-5%. --Since the installation of W7RC, once the fan starts blowing at full speed, it will NOT stop, until reboot. [EDIT UPDATE] -It appears to be linked to a heat issue. I was monitoring core heat, and the fan does spin up in response to high heat (even though load never exceeded during 25% during the monitoring period - I was watching a YouTube video at the time), but as has been described in relation to this problem, even once the heat has returned to normal levels, the fan never slows down. -For emphasis: Never happened prior to W7RC installation. [/EDIT UPDATE] [EDIT UPDATE2] And no sooner do I make this above report, than does the fan silence itself of its own accord. After about 10 minutes. Whereas I have previously noted this problem to persist while I was attending to other errands in my office for upwards of 1/2 hour before I rebooted it to quiet it down. This may after all be a heat issue, but then why is the computer heating up under minimal load? [/EDIT UPDATE2] PROBLEM #2: WDC WD2500BEVS-26UST0 ATA Device detection -W7RC detects the internal Western Digital hard drive as removable storage and gives me the option to "eject" it in the Devices & Printers icon. --This problem was addressed by user axfelix. PROBLEM #3: Desktop Background "Change Picture Every" malfunction -Problem started when I noticed that --A) my computer was hard-freezing (ie. frozen screen with no response at all) after about 30 minutes of operation, and --B) my wallpaper was not shuffling, even though set to do so at 30 minute intervals. -I began to experiment with the settings, changing the interval, as well as the shuffle option. --The wallpaper began rotating only when I toggled the "When using battery power" option. It is on now, and the feature works. ---Note: I am running my laptop on my desk with no battery in it. --I could not replicate the freezing behaviour during experimentation, although it has not recurred since the rotation began working. I would especially appreciate any insight into the FAN ISSUE. The other two aren't really important to my use of the system, but the fan problem makes my computer very loud when I'm just trying to work, and moreover, if the fan will not regulate properly, it will burn itself out. If this doesn't get resolved soonish, I'll have to ditch W7RC, which would be a shame, as I'm otherwise enjoying the functionality. In my original post re: the fan, I included links to 4 other postings I dug up on the web, complaining of fan regulation issues that seemed to tied to a W7 install, so it isn't a unique problem. Cheers.
