Browser traffic does not go through VPN on Windows 7
Hello Everyone, I was using Windows XP built in VPN client to tunnel to a Win2003 RRAS server. The entire traffic (including HTTP browser) traffic was encrypted, my IP address would show as my RRAS server's address. Effectivly, the server was used as a gateway (i.e. no split tunneling). With Windows 7, disabling split tunnelling seems to interfer with host resolution and therefore encrypting browser traffic doesn't seem to work. When connected by VPN, websites cannot be resolved; I get "Error 105 (net::ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED): The server could not be found." None of the following solutions worked: 1. The solutions / workarounds listed in this article :http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942440 (DNSCache registry modification, Checking use default gateway on remote network, setting up DNS on subdomain isn't possible) 2. Unchecking "use default gateway on remote network" doesn't work either. Browser traffic isn't routed to the server in this case. This basically enables split tunneling; which is not desired. Please let me know if there's a way to disable split tunneling (ie route all traffic to the server) without having internet host resolution issues. Thanks, A.

Hi, Can you tell me which VPN software did you use, the Cisco client, the Windows 7 built-in or other client software? Based on my research, I suggest you also try the following steps to troubleshoot the issue. 1. Create a new VPN connection without any third party software. Temporarily disable firewall and IPv6 option to check the result. a. Click Start button --> Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> Network and Share Center --> Click "Set up a new connection or network" under the "Change your networking settings". b. Select " Connect to a workplace" and click Next --> Use my internet connection (VPN) --> Type the internet address and destination name in the box --> Check 'Don't connect now; just set it up so I can connect later' and click Next --> Enter your VPN username and password --> Then click the 'Create' button --> Click the 'Close' button to finish. 2. Please also refer to the following article to troubleshoot the issue. You Cannot Connect to the Internet After You Connect to a VPN Server Split Tunneling Thanks, Novak
