Bridging two networks
When on the road, I have a need to connect my Windows 8.1 laptop to the hotel's wireless network, then connect my Netgear router to the laptop and bring the connect to share the hotel wireless network with my other devices.  If I use a Windows 7 laptop to create the bridge, everything works great and I can reshare the connection.  However, when I try to do the exact same thing from my Windows 8.1 laptop, it sets up exactly the same and the bridge is created with no issues, but I can't get to the internet from any of the devices I connect to the Netgear router.  What am I doing wrong?

Bob

Can we assume you have booted Netgear and the 8.1 machine at the same time?  What happens if you ping the netgear?  the win 7, the hotels wifi?

Start>search (or run)>cmd>right click to run as admin> ping Microsoft.com

Next step (when in 8.1 config) is to type netstat -an from the same elevated command prompt.  Please post this in your next post

Also please type ipconfig /all and paste it as well.

i have tried on windows 7 but not on windows 8.1 but i believe it will work.
i think what you need is not bridging but ICS. (internet connection sharing)

my guess of your current connection is
WIFI > laptop > netgear(LAN)

try the below link

http://www.home-network-help.com/internet-sharing.html

just remember to set the router ip to 192.168.137.x and the default gateway to 192.168.137.1 (For WAN connection)

IP address will assigned by your netgear router remember to enable DHCP

For dhcp remember to set the DNS name (public dns 8.8.8.8 will be good)

run cmd > ping 8.8.8.8 will be good if request pass then all is good.

physical connection should be

Wifi > laptop > netgear(WAN port)

Good luck have fun :)

You can also replace http:// with hxxp:// in the link as that will "get through" while you are waiting to be verified

Andy, thanks for the suggestion.  I tried this and it does not do what I need to have done.
February 16th, 2015 9:06am

When I replace the nxxp:// it asked for the app that I want to allow opening on my computer.  What app would that be?

Bob

You do not need to OPEN the link.  For example if your onedrive link (or where ever you put it) is https://onedrive.com/random charaacters here you change the link to hxxps//onedrive.com/same random characters

Bob

You did not ping as admin. In other words you missed the "right click and run as admin".  That should have no effect.

Is fall_city the bridged device or the hotel wireless.  You can obviously connect to fall city but not the internet.  I do notice a lot of port mapping (geek speak) but do not think that is related.

Questions

Does this only happen at this one hotel (or all hotels)

Why do you connect the 8.1 first and not the Netgear? ( connect my Windows 8.1 laptop to the hotel's wireless network, then connect my Netgear router ).  Couldn't you just plug the netgear into the hotels wifi then log onto the netgear from both PC's and let the netgear do the routing/sharing?

February 16th, 2015 10:24am

Yes, Fall City is the SID for the router that I would like my other devices to connect to and get on the Internet through the bridge.

This happens in all hotels and is not set up on my home network where it's also happening.  Again, this is not an issue if I bring a Windows 7 laptop with me (or use it at home) and set up a bridge.  It only happens when I try to bridge through my Windows 8.1 laptop.  I want to avoid having to lug around additional hardware to make this work.

The only access I have to the hotel network is wireless.  As such, I have to connect my Windows 8.1 laptop to the wireless network first, then plug the router into the Ethernet port on my laptop.

Wanikiya and Dyami, any thoughts on how to fix this?  I used another Windows 8.1 laptop I have to create the bridge and it did the exact same thing.  Now I know for sure it's not a strange setting on my original Windows 8.1 laptop causing the issue.

I appreciate the video.  However, I am trying to bridge from a laptop to a router to share the connection to other wireless devices around me.  I addition, you are using Windows 7 to create the bridge, which in my situation, works great and I can do exactly what I'm trying to do.  The problem is I can't make it work when bridging with a  Windows 8.1 laptop.  It should be identical, but for some reason it's not.  I've tried it on two different Windows 8.1 laptops and the bridge will not work in either.

Hi,

Please try to disable the firewall and IPv6 for test.

I tied both and it didn't make a difference.  I thought for a minute that you might be on to something.  I wonder if bridging, the way I'm trying to do it, was disabled in Windows 8.1 or is just broken.

Ok. I really need to figure this out.  Thanks for looking into this.  My guess is this is an undocumented bug in Windows 8.1.
February 23rd, 2015 9:10am

Hi,

About router access problem, because we don't have the Router to make test, it's hard to identify where the problem it is. Let's narrow down the issue again:

From the screenshot you provided below:

BOBANG-DELL is your client PC and he client connect router fine, right?

To confirm this, please ping the Windows 8.1(here as network server) from client computer(BOBANG-DELL).

This part work fine, then open the network interface of router to see if it could connect to Windows 8.1 server and Internet.

If the router has no internet access, it should be the Windows 8.1 share issue. Please refer to this thread to reconfigure:

http://superuser.com/questions/241651/setting-up-wifi-router-as-a-switch-for-internet-connection-sharing

If the router have internet access, it should be the router issue.

Update the router firmware to be adjust to Windows 8.1 and then assign static IP to client for test.

February 24th, 2015 4:07am

BOBANG-DELL is the client PC that is trying to connect through the bridge, but cannot.  The screen shot is met to show that the client PC has successfully connected to the Fall_City router but the Windows 8.1 laptop, where the bridge is created, will not allow the router to pass through the bridge and access the Internet.

I'm having a slight technical issue that is preventing me from establishing the bridge connection on my Windows 8.1 laptop.  In doing some testing yesterday, I used the command line to establish an Internet Connection Sharing link on my wireless connection.  Thought I would try this to see if it would work.  It didn't fix my problem.  However, now when I try to establish the bridge between my Ethernet adapter and my wireless adapter, I get an error message stating "To create a Network Bridge you must select at least two LAN or High-Speed Internet connections that are not being used by Internet Connection Sharing."  I ran service.msc and stopped the service and set it to manual, but I'm still getting the error message.  Any suggestions?

February 24th, 2015 9:34am

Just to save time in your response, I checked the property tabs of both adapters and neither is set to share it's connection. Also, I changed the service to "disable" rebooted the computer and still get the same error message when trying to establish a bridge.

before you bridge can you try setting up your lan for your laptop to other wireless devices using 192.168.137.0/24 network?
try this setup
in your laptop lan interface ip address 192.168.137.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway and dns blank.
connect laptop lan interface to netgear router wan interface.

netgear wan interface set to static ip address 192.168.137.2  netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.137.1

netgear lan interface dhcp

try to use another computer to connect to your netgear using wireless it should get another ip address.

then try ping 192.168.137.2 then ping 192.168.137.1.

if successful then follow the previous link i have given "www.home-network-help.com/internet-sharing.htm" this is pretty fool proof. i will say it might be lan setup issue.

February 24th, 2015 10:04pm

I can't get past this error message wen I try to establish the bridge between my Ethernet adapter and my wireless adapter, I get an error message stating "To create a Network Bridge you must select at least two LAN or High-Speed Internet connections that are not being used by Internet Connection Sharing."  I ran service.msc and stopped the service and set it to disable but I'm still getting the error message. Until I can get past this, I can't do any more testing.

you don't have to bridge when using Internet connection sharing.

The solution i am offering is to share your wifi connection to your netgear router Not a bridge network from your wifi connection

it's like creating your own lan network and your laptop acts as a ISP so no bridging is required

just in case you looking for disable answers.syr.edu/display/os/Disable+Internet+Connection+Sharing+in+Windows+8+and+8.1

you could simply unchecked the check box which you checked.

February 25th, 2015 4:48am

I have the box unchecked and am still getting error message.  Please review the previous threads.  All of the obvious steps were taken.

I did try to set up an ICS, that's what caused this latest issue of not being able to clear that connection within Window 8.1.

Ok, I was able to fix the ICS error message when trying to bridge the two connections.  I then went back and tried to set up an ICS per answers.syr.edu/display/os/Disable+Internet+Connection+Sharing+in+Windows+8+and+8.1 instructions.  However, when I click on "Allow other network users...." I don't get the dialog box to select the other adapter.

Also, the bridging still doesn't work.  However, the most important point is, everything works perfect with Windows 7.  I still think this is an undocumented Windows 8.1 bug.

Hi,

From your prompt information "To create a Network Bridge you must select at least two LAN or High-Speed Internet connections that are not being used by Internet Connection Sharing.", it seems that you have meet this requirement.

Please post your network adapter settings (like below) of your Windows 8.1 host computer here for analysis:

Check if your router and this wireless network adapter in the same LAN segment.

Karen, per the previous threads, that issue was fixed.  I can create a bridge, the bridge just doesn't work.
