Bootmgr is missing after unsuccessful attempt at booting Ubuntu 10.04 from a CD
I receive a the message 'Bootmgr is missing Press CTRL+AL+DELETE' upon Win7 Home Premium startup . This message started after I tried booting Ubuntu 10.04 from a CD. I thought Ubuntu would simply boot from the CD, thus I did not remove my harddrive prior to the boot. Ubuntu 10.04 failed, so I removed the CD and tried booting back to Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium. Now I receive the Bootmgr is missing problem. The only way I can boot my Win7 is to insert the original Win7 installation DVD and not hit any keys to boot from the CD. Strange huh? I figure the problem is a result of changes Ubuntu made to the bootloader. I think they call theirs GRUB. Anyway, I have tried repairing via the Windows Recovery Environment. I used the Bootrec.exe command with the /FixMbr, /FixBoot and /RebuildBCD options. When I issue the /ScanOS option, it does not find any OS. Nothing seems to work. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can resolve this problem. At least I can boot my Win7 by using the original disc. I really don't want to re-install Windows as my system works fine albeit a strange way to boot it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Have you tried a Startup Repair from the Windows DVD? If not, run it several times.

I have tried StartUp repair. It did say 1 repair was performed, but the log did not reveal any details. I restarted the computer and continued to have the same problem. Here are the results of BCDEDIT: Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7600] Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. C:\Windows\system32>bcdedit Windows Boot Manager -------------------- identifier {bootmgr} device partition=\Device\HarddiskVolume1 path \bootmgr description Windows Boot Manager locale en-US inherit {globalsettings} default {current} resumeobject {c56d2a42-088f-11df-9593-cd1ec692ceca} displayorder {current} toolsdisplayorder {memdiag} timeout 30 Windows Boot Loader ------------------- identifier {current} device partition=C: path \Windows\system32\winload.exe description Windows 7 locale en-US inherit {bootloadersettings} recoverysequence {c56d2a44-088f-11df-9593-cd1ec692ceca} recoveryenabled Yes osdevice partition=C: systemroot \Windows resumeobject {c56d2a42-088f-11df-9593-cd1ec692ceca} nx OptIn I compared this to the results of another running machine I have (also Win 7) and they look very comparable. I suspect I need to re-install the BootLoader. This get performed as part of a Win install, but I don't know how I can do that independent of the other installation activities.

I’ve just noticed that you said you could boot up Windows using the DVD. In which case, you should be able to install and run EasyBCD. Download EasyBCD, scroll down here http://neosmart.net/dl.php?id=1 and get the instructions here http://neosmart.net/wiki/display/EBCD/EasyBCD+Documentation+Home After installing, go to the Add/Remove Entries Tab to change which systems you want/have.

Try deleting the grub loader.

Booting a Live CD will not install Grub or anything else, it all runs off the CD. Vote if answered or helpful, I am running for Office (joke)! So how do you know it was a live CD?

Sounds like Brent needs to go into his BIOS and tell it to boot to the harddrive first..

It will boot to the harddrive second so why would that matter?

Live CD will not install unless you tell it to. You can run it Live and actually even use a browser right off the CD. Vote if answered or helpful, I am running for Office (joke)! Thank your for the advice. I did install EasyBCD and added an entry. I then went to Manage Bootloader and, with the "Reinstall the Vista Bootloader" radio button highlighted, clicked on Write MBR. This all seemed to work. I restarted my machine and I continued to receive the Bootmgr is missing error message. I then booted into the Windows Recovery Environment using my Win 7 Premium Home DVD. Once there, I clicked on 'Startup Repair'. This completed successfully but with no more diagnostics than anytime before. I then went to the Command Prompt and executed the Bootrec program using, in this order, /FixMBR, then /FixBoot then /RebuildBcd. Once all this was done, I removed the Win 7 Premium Home DVD and rebooted my PC. At this point, I was able to boot my Win 7. However, I now have reverted back to the old "Vista" and "XP" startup screen (before it passes control to Win 7. In other words, I now see a green bar scroll from left to right during startup versus the Win 7 starburst theme (four colored stars that start from each quadrant of the screen then converge into the middle of the screen. I suspect this is due to what EasyBCD has done when I did the Add entry and Write MBR. I noticed in the Add/REmove Entries, the drop down had no Win 7 entry, but did mention Vista and Longhorn. Since Longhorn was Win 7 then perhaps this is what is expected. Since I do have my machine bootable now, I'm nearly finished. By chance does anyone know how I can get back the Winows 7 starburst theme upon startup?

First off, running all those versions of Windows off the disk is a tad tricky. I suggest Virtual PC which I use extensively. So If I need to use XP which is free for Windows 7 Profession and up. As for your theme, right click on the desktop and select personalize. Vote if answered or helpful, I am running for Office (joke)! I'm only running Win7 Home Premium. I don't understand your comment on themes. I'm familiar with themes, but didn't think this had anything to do with the screen upon system startup. AGain, this is only during the very 1st stage of the boot. I'm assuming this has something to do with a screen image the boot loader uses. Once Win7 appears and has me sign in, then everything is back to how it used to be. I'm familair with virtualized guests, hosts and hypervisors so you have a great suggestion. However, I have not implemented this on my home PC due to keeping it very "uasable" for the rest of my family. I'll keep this in mind for my next rainy day activity.

Well you are 1 SKU below what is needed, so you will need Virtual PC 2007 but that version cannot virtualize the USB so orphaned devices are not helped.
