I thought I would post this over here as well (also in a continued thread in the hardware section) since, within the control panel, bluetooth is also supposed to show up under the networking section. My problem (and some others, as the other thread shows) is that within the control panel, there are no options for bluetooth, anywhere. Searching for bluetooth, using the quick search, gives me only a link to the networking section, and once that is clicked, there is no more mention of bluetooth, anywhere (other then in the help files). The bluetooth device was succesfuly installed (as reported by the driver installing within vista), and it shows up as a bluetooth device in the device manager, with the correct name, and no issues reported. However, there is still no options to use this device, anywhere. Any information would be greatly appriciated. Also: The built in help for vista bluetooth hardware is mostly useless, as almost all of it refers to different options within the bluetooth menu in the control panel.

Go to Control Panel, switch to Classic View and look for Bluetooth Devices icon, it should be there if you are sure that it's already installed and make sure that the Bluetooth stick LED is flashing (means it's working). Let me in the know . Good luck

its no where, not under classic, not under anything, i know its installed cause it went through the installation correctly, and it shows up in the device manager as working, connected, etc..

Try to remove the Bluetooth stick, restart computer, install it again and see what would happen. Good luck

I have the exact same problem as the original poster. I'm about to give up on this because I simply can't get Bluetooth to work. I even tried using my old WIDCOMM drivers from XP, but they caused all sorts of problems (it did get the old WIDCOMM control panel to show up though).And yes I've rolled back the drivers, tried drivers for other devices, uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers, etc. The Bluetooth stick lights up, and as you can see from my screenshots it shows up in Device Manager, but the Bluetooth Devices control panel never appears. I even tried searching for the BT control panel itself. I found bthprops.cpl (not sure if it's the BT control panel or not) but when I try to open it nothing happens.Here's some screencaps of what I'm talking about.

Try changing the Bluetooth device from current USB port and have a check. Good luck

No not yet, but having talked to folk more into computers than me, they have said I can just buy a Bluetooth USB plug it in and apparently it will work! If you put 'bluetooth usb' into ebay the thingscome up for a few pounds but havent bought one yet, doing more research!!! Good luck and merry Christmas x

I was able to install my bluettoth devices but there's no service that I can relate to the device therefore I can't use it. How can I install those services so I can connect my phone or earbud?

Sounds like your device is NOT supported. I had a Motorola Bluetooth USB stick and it did not work. I also had a Bluetooth device which I purchased at CompUSA (The one with the antenna that sticks up). Plugged that in and Vista installed the drivers. Then I checked control panel, hardware and sound, and there it was at the bottom.It is very nice of Motorola to not post any drivers for their device. Enyoy!

i have the same problem with my T60. it happened after my comopany ITreplacedmy hard disk with another T60 hard disk because of other issue. i tried the Fujitsu-Siemens method, but didn't work. i think it's also the problem of device ID in those INF files. can anyone help me on my T60?

Tried all of the above but still cant get bluetooth to appear in Control Panel on VISTA. The USB adapter is installed with drivers from 2006 and its LED indicates it is on. There were no errors on installing, I just cant do anything with the adapter as there is no icon in control panel..

I am trying to set up a Kensington Bluetooth Dongle on an XP Pro machine, and I get no bluetooth services anywhere. I tried editing the Registry as outlined in the MS article, and absolutely nothing happened. Any other ideas??

I am the kind of guy who turns off unnecessary services, I wasn't using BT for a while, but I was frustrated all afternoon trying to get it sync up with my phone and new BT headphones.If you run services.msc (which is the service management tool)You should see a Bluetooth Support Service, set this to start and then have it automatically start with windows as well.As soon as I did this, I was in business.I then ran the Bluetooth control panel application: bthprops.cplThis worked, and now I see Bluetooth listed in my actual control panel as well.Note, you may still see the BT device other places and the wizard to add devices, but it seems without the support service they cannot function.System Specs:Internal Dell Bluetooth on Inspiron e1505/6400Vista Home Premium 32bit

Thing is, on my computer the "Bluetooth Support Service" isn't even present So how do you turn the thing on? No. And there doesn't even seem to be an LED present on my bluetooth device - in installs nicely, windows detects it correctly, but then.. nothing So for now I've more or less given up. I'd still love an answer to this though...

I may be able to help. I installed a bluetooth card in my XPS, and after installing the driver i also didn't have a control program. I looked the the directory that the driver installed in, and there was a setup program - when I ran this, I got everything I needed - a bluetooth icon in my taskbar, bluetooth in the control panel (under 'Other Control Panels Options'), and a bluetooth tab in the mouse control panel properties. I am running XP, so don't know if VISTA will work the same way.

I stumbled upon this thread and while reading i found the solution to my own problem. Windows xp pro sp2, bluetooth icon not showing up in control panel and im having poor performance with BT devices. I tried control panel -> administrative tools -> computer management expand the services and applications(by using the + symbol) then click on "services" in the list to the right side, find bluetooth support services and double click on that. Ensure that the service is both set to automatic and started. Hopefully this helps someone! best wishes. j.

I am having the same problem. I'm installing a Kensington bluetooth USB adapter on a laptop with XP Pro Tablet SP3, and I cannot find the Bluetooth Support in the Control Panel, and it is also not present under the MSC Services list. None of the "fixes" I've found thus far have worked. Anyone have an idea?

After a good hour of tinkering I finally got Bluetooth appeared on my Control Panel. Mine is Sony TZ18 with Vista Business.Not sure which of the steps below did it finally but here's the rundown:1. tried http://support.microsoft.com/kb/911894 , but didn't work. But I wondered if this has part in making the later steps work out.2. Went to check under Control Panel > Device Manager if bluetooth is indeed installed. Yes it was. I also noted that the bluetooth hardware apparently is made by Toshiba (in a Sony machine).3. So I searched for Toshiba Bluetooth and came up with lots of sites from which I can download the driver/stack or whichever they call it. I downloaded one. I wont bother mention which one because I ended up not installing it and went on another way.4. Then it dawned on me that I should check www.sony.com for drivers for bluetooth. Sure enough I found one. It 's not listed under the exact model/type for my TZ18 but I just picked one that looked close: TZ180. Some 25MB. Downloaded.5. Installed it and Voila! Now my Control Panel shows 'Bluetooth Local COM'. And,... my system tray (is that what you might call it? the one on the right bottom corner) also shows the much relieving Bluetooh Logo.In summary, I dont know why it's not installed in the first place because I had run the factory provided System Recovery which you would think should have all the drivers for every piece of hardware came with the machine. O well.So check your brand's website for bluetooth driver. If all else fails, check your bluetooth hardware's brand (from Control Panel>Device Manager) and do a search for driver/stack for it (which could be for one that's made by different company than your laptop).

GOT IT! In XP I simply went to windows update and installed service pack 3, and thensure enough in control panel "Bluetooth Devices" was there!!! hope this helps. my next problem was that when in bluetooth devices it did not recognize my chip, even though device manager recognized it. to fix this, i installed the Bluetooth Stack from CD for my chip (Dell Bluetooth 360). With no COM ports set on my mobile device, the software was finallyable to recognize "activesync" on my mobile device, and it synced up in activesync when i set the computer's activesync softwareto the COM port that my bluetooth stack said was for serial port. remember, no com port setting needs to be set on your mobile device! GOODLUCK!

I had this issue with a Dell 630 and it seemed like I was getting nowhere. The Microsoft reg. fix did nothing. I saw the device in Device Manager, but no services or Control Panel entries. Well, I have the problem of the Bluetooth control panel not showing up. The service is installed and running. If I run it directly at the command prompt by typing bthprops.cpl, it comes up and works fine. It set it to show in the tray, and I get to it there now. It's still a mystery to me why it isn't in the control panel, though. Jamie

God, what a pain in the butt. Same bluetooth device (rocketfish dongle)on the same computer with the same OS (Vista Ult SP1)- but after a clean install, I could not get Bluetooth to install into the Control Panel; even though it was listed in the Device Manager (but no services listed in services.msc) Long story short, I couldn't figure this out after trying various ideas from this thread. Then, I popped in the CD for the keyboard/mouse that I was wanting to ultimately install and I just started clicking every executable (.exe) I could find on the CD. One of these turned out to be aninstaller for WIDCOMM Bluetooth Software. After letting this run, things seemed to come right up. Go figure, just randomly install stuff and you'll eventually fix things...

The BT device is a Microsoft Bluetooth MouseSo goto:C:\Program Files\Toshiba\Bluetooth Toshiba StackClick on: AS.exeThis gives your machine the drivers. It also starts the BT. You should see the BT in systray.Double click this and the BT Settings wizard should show up. Click 'New Connection' Then engage the BT device by turning on the BT signal. This is usually some recessed button on the device.Hope this helps!

I think your bluetooth device is not turn on in XP search for this file BTTray.exe (if you have successfully install the bluetooth device driver) and execute it should see the bluetooth icon at the bottom right Right click and enable the radio hope that work

I've done your instructions on procedure 2. but I got an error message saying "Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it. Generic bluetooth adapter This device cannot start. (Code 10) " Do you know how to fix this? Thankz in advance

I had a similar problem of 'the missing Bluetooth Icon' .. after a bit of fiddling around i found that running the program BTWizard.exe which is part of the 'Intellitype' software install brought it back! Just de-select the 2 options for discovering the mouse and keyboard it offers and let it look for other devices .. It was installed here in my Win 7 x64 box ... C:\Program Files\Microsoft IntelliType Pro .. I'm hoping it will still be there after a re-boot ..

hi experts, my system - Lenovo T400, on WinXP Pro Ver.2002 SP3, same problem as mention by other users... so far i've read & tried most of the suggested resolutions mentioned. but i still could not have the Bluetooth Devices icon appear in my Control Panel or where ever... *Bluetooth support service - non-existent in Admin.Tools>Services *http://support.microsoft.com/kb/911894 - did not help either. *procedure 1, ..2 & everybody - also not ok *BTWizard.exe & BTTray.exe are non-existent in my pc, as per Search in all locations. & the other suggestions mentioned here dunno how many i've tried already. Folks I had the same problem with Windows XP HP laptop with integrated bluetooth device. I found a folder C:\System\Drivers\Bluetooth which had a setup.exe which I executed. It installed the whole jing bang and Voila !!! Everything is working. What triggered me to look for it was BDKAR's manual instruction 4 above. Good luck !

YOU ARE A GENIUS!!! I've fought with a Motorola PC850 USB adapter to get it to work with Vista and was at my wits end until now. There is a version for the device on Motorola's site but it's not Vista compatible. Vista recognizes it as the Broadcom Module 2035 and installs the drivers on teh Broadcom end, but still no stack. So, I downloaded it anyway (since it's a newer version than the disk), installed "Run as Admin" but it had issues, so I downloaded the Broadcom update that is compatible and lo and behold, wouldn't install due to no MS Stack. So, thanks to you I: 1. Uninstalled the Motorola from "BLUETOOTH DEVICES" and followed your instructions but instead installed the Bluetonium 2035 trans. and so far so good. Can hear very well over the headset and the system recognizes it in the audio devices, configured great. Just wanted to Say THANK YOU! I hate Vista and hope I get this puppy straightened out from HP repair to upgrade to Win 7 again.

This was of great assistance thanks. What I found in addition to this is that if windows is started with bluetooth services disabled and you plug in your generic dongle it Windows will try to find a driver. Even though it says its not installed there is a driver associated with the dongle so you must uninstall the driver then disable the device and physically take if out and then start the bluetooth services in your adminstrative tools services section. Then plug the dongle back it. Windows should then find the unit correctly. I am on win7 and never did get the bluetooth logo to show up btu the deive is connected under generic bluetooth radio and when I select it for properties the logo appears and I am able to change parameters. To reiterate: 1) Uninstall you driver 2) Disable it 3) Unplug it from your computer 4) Start bluetooth services 5) Plug dongle back in Hope this helps

Maybe it will help some of you, has the software to "control" your devices and all.

I found lots of info in this thread, perhaps my findings will help another too. Dell E6500 Latitude laptop Dell Bluetooth Travel mouse. I've experienced the same issues: No Bluetooth control panel, no Bluetooth Services in services.msc, no Bluetooth Toshiba stack. The Bluetooth light is glowing on the laptop but that's it. I had also installed Bluetooth drivers utilities disc for the Bluetooth Travel mouse and still no joy. This was found in the input devices at the dell support page for this model laptop. It did not change things but add set point app, which didn't help. No bangs in Device Manager. Nevertheless, I went to Dell and downloaded the E6500 Service Tag specific, "Wireless 370 Bluetooth Minicard" driver, found in the Networking section of the Drivers page at support.dell.com. Once installed and activated (so to speak), I had all of my Bluetooth functionality back and was able to add Bluetooth devices again. A driver is not enough, the Bluetooth "stack" is needed first. Good luck.

If your USB dongle installs correctly but there is no Bluetooth icon in the control panel try these easy steps, Go into to Device Manager and select your USB Dongle. Right click and select, 'Update Driver' Select option, 'Yes, this time only'. Then select the option, 'Install software automatically' Believe it or not, the wizard correctly download the missing service, installs and correctly configures it! I'm surprised non of the Microsoft chaps above did not advise this. P.S. I followed http://support.microsoft.com/kb/911894 before doing the above. I don't think it made much difference, but maybe it worth a look if above doesn't work for you.

The Answer is not to install or reinstall devices or software but to ensure that the bluetooth services are started and also set to start automatically. Setting to start automatically requires a reboot to be effective. Services are found by clicking START then in the search box enter SERVICES, a list pops up, click on the word SERVICES. Their names all start "blue...". BLUETOOTH SUPPORT and BLUETOOTH SERVICES are needed. Right-click on BLUETOOTH SERVICES, click PROPERTIES, find the drop-down for STARTUP TYPE, click on the down-arrow, set it to AUTOMATIC, click OK; restart computer or shutdown and then turn it back on, same thing for purposes of this. The device and driver install/reinstall process should also work but may not, and is a PITA if the software/hardware is already installed....removal/redetection and/or uninstal/reinstal is a LONG way to go if the problem is to have the servive running on startup. Which it needs to be to insure the appearance of the control panel applet in the control panel. Under some circumstances one could launch the control panel aplet itself, but I am not sure that that is possible from the user interface, as opposed to in a software development setting. If it is, it's over my head, I'm just one who has used and been abused by computers for 46 years, not an expert.

Yes..I agree with John. Some times Services are stopped. They should be restarted. INcase if they are already in Start, then stop it and restart it. It solved my problem.Hope it helps others regards, ghorpade

I thought I would post this over here as well (also in a continued thread in the hardware section) since, within the control panel, bluetooth is also supposed to show up under the networking section. My problem (and some others, as the other thread shows) is that within the control panel, there are no options for bluetooth, anywhere. Searching for bluetooth, using the quick search, gives me only a link to the networking section, and once that is clicked, there is no more mention of bluetooth, anywhere (other then in the help files). The bluetooth device was succesfuly installed (as reported by the driver installing within vista), and it shows up as a bluetooth device in the device manager, with the correct name, and no issues reported. However, there is still no options to use this device, anywhere. Any information would be greatly appriciated. Also: The built in help for vista bluetooth hardware is mostly useless, as almost all of it refers to different options within the bluetooth menu in the control panel.

Not sure if you guys/girls got yourselves sorted, but here's how I (finally) kicked VISTA (sorry, dunno about XP just yet) into: A) installing my Bluetooth device B) having "Bluetooth Devices" in the control panel C) showing the wee Bluetooth icon in the bottom right-hand corner of the Taskbar D) all the various amounts of joy that come with Bluetooth working! # Here are two procedures, follow one or t’other depending on which applies to you! First, Click "Start Menu" then "Control Panel". Double-click "Device Manager" in the control panel (you have to be in 'Classic View' to see it). This opens a new window. EITHER: Your device installed ok, but isn’t doing what you want. In this case you'll have an item called something like "Bluetooth USB" or "Bluetooth Devices" or whatever. Follow “Procedure 1”, then “Everybody”. OR: Your device never found a driver & didn't even install at all, in which case you'll see an item with a yellow exclamation sign next to it under "Other devices". Follow “Procedure 2”, then “Everybody”. Procedure 1. 1) So, you've got an item called something like "Bluetooth USB" or "Bluetooth Devices" or whatever. Expand this by clicking the little " + " sign on it's left to see the Bluetooth device(s) in a sub-list. Right click the device & choose "Uninstall". A warning comes up, say "OK". The device gets uninstalled. Repeat for all the Bluetooth devices if you have a couple of them. Once they're gone, choose "Scan for hardware changes" in the "Action" menu. Now you'll see an item with a yellow exclamation sign next to it under "Other devices". Go to the “Everybody” stage. 2) IF and ONLY IF after choosing "Scan for hardware changes" in the "Action" menu you find you’re device simply gets reinstalled and you find yourself back where you were (how annoying!) then do this: right click the Bluetooth device & choose “Update Driver Software…”. Now go to step 2 of the “Everybody” stage. Procedure 2. 1) Your device never found a driver & didn't even install at all, in which case you'll see an item with a yellow exclamation sign next to it under "Other devices". Good for you, life is simpler than for everyone else! Go to the “Everybody” stage. Everybody. 1) Right click the device with the yellow exclamation mark & choose “Update Driver Software…” 2) In the window which comes up, choose the second option, “Browse my computer for driver software.” 3) In the next window click on “Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer” 4) You’re presented with an enormous list of stuff. The (approx) 6th thing is “Bluetooth Radios”. Left-click “Bluetooth Radios” to select it then click “Next”. 5) Under the left-hand column “Manufacturer” choose “GenericAdapter”, then in the right-hand column “Model” choose “Generic Bluetooth Adapter” & finally click Next. 6) A warning comes up saying “Installing this device is not recommended because blah blah blah”.. Say “Yes” anyway, the device installs and you get a final window saying that “Windows has successfully updated your driver software.” Press “Close” to return to the Device Manager window. 7) At the top you’ll see “Bluetooth Radios” and clicking the “ + ” sign will show you both “Generic Bluetooth Adapter” and “Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator”. 8) Take a look at your bottom right-hand corner of the taskbar… You’ll see a Bluetooth icon there. RE-open (i.e. close it, open it again – just because it might not update without this) your control panel (still in Classic View) – you’ll see “Bluetooth Devices”. 9) Smile. Grin. Dance a little, perhaps. You should now be able to do whatever it was that was making you scour the internet for a solution to this rather tedious nonsense… Woohoo! Thanks so much . Go to My Computer --> Properties --> device manager --> Double Click the pan under bluetooth --> Enable the device and keep your wifi on as well ---- DONE ----

I have small story. This didn't make Bluetooth Devices appear in Control Panel, but I could double-click on the icon in the system tray then, and then select 'search for devices in range'. I right-clicked to disable my mouse, then when this screen refreshed, it found the mouse on the next go. Thank goodness you posted your finding!
