Blue Screen on Windows 7
I am running a new HP Pavilion 6250 with AMD quad processor 64bit which came with Windows 7 installed and an HP monitor. The computer randomly shuts itself down for no apparent reason and reboots to the log in screen. After logging back in it says that it has recovered from an unexpected shutdown. It says it will check for a solution to the problem but then nothing else happens. Hi, Since Windows system uses separated user mode and kernel mode memory space, stop errors are usually caused by kernel portion components, such as a hardware device, third-party drivers, backup software or anti-virus services (buggy services). Please refer to the following steps to troubleshoot the issue. 1. Boot the computer in Clean Boot for a test. 2. Temporarily disable all unnecessary hardware devices in Device Manager, such as Modem, sound card or external device. For detail steps, we can refer to the link below: Device Clean Boot 3. Run antivirus program and perform a full scanning. If the issue persists, please upload the minidump file (%systemroot%\minidump) to SkyDrive ( www.skydrive.live.com ), then share the link to me. I will be glad to assist you to analysis the data. Thanks, Novak

Yes. I will up load the zip file to Windows Live. Thanks.Patty
November 4th, 2009 8:28pm

I have uploaded the zip file to Skydrive. Thanks! So far after running the clean boot, I think I have found the culprit to be one of the HP files. Since they were from the manufacturer I selected just HP files first thinking they would be the least likely problem. Wrong. SO I unchecked the HP files and checked all the other files. So far so good. I went back into the action center and was able to create temp files to zip and send. Also, for some reason, When I tell Windows to search for a solution it does, then it says windows needs more Information, I click ok but it says it's having trouble sending the information and to try again later.I may have accidently set up a LAN when I set up my computer. I have no LAN cable connected to the computer. I am using a wireless Linksys router instead. Could Windows be looking for a LAN cable that does not exist? If so, How do I correct this in Win 7.Patty

Since the blue screen did not occur after clearing the HP files, we can conclude that the HP file is the culprit. Please keep clearing the option to avoid the issue. Meanwhile, the system will not look for LAN cable automatically when there is nowired cable on the machine. You need not worry about the LAN cable when using Wireless.

felibo, your are experiencing a different Stop Error so you may benefit from starting your own thread. However, from your minidump file your issue is being caused by the driver for your network card, specifically the lne100v4.sys. The lne100v4.sys has a timestamp of "Thu May 04 02:07:50 2000" so is an older driver and may not be compatible with Windows 7.If you are unable to find a more recent driver for you network card consider, if it is possible, to remove the card, and install a network card which has compatibleWindows 7 drivers.

Ok, I"m having the same problem, the puter locks up and now my internet connection just quits. I closed all programs running and the cpu is going at 100% When I restart it hangs for like 10 mins and blue screen comes up just like these people. I think I want to go back to vista no probs at all. My first question is: i made the recovery disks for vista, can I go back??? I can do what you said for these people also. I really don't like what you all did with the windows explorer in vista and in 7. The old one was way better for finding files and u can see your whole harddrive at a glance. moolyjones, the minidump files revealed a DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE (9f) Stop Error(A driver is causing an inconsistent power state) and that driver has been identified as the netr28ux.sys.The netr28ux.sys appears to be a driver for a wireless adapter. Now the netr28ux.sys has a timestamp of "Sep 15 00:36:45 2009" so it appears that this driver has been recently updated. What wireless adapter do youhave and where did you get the drivers for the adapter?

I have a Zonet zew2545 802 11n wireless adapter and installed the driver from the cd that came with the thing.
November 9th, 2009 4:09pm

mooleyjones, Zonet does not appear to have a Windows 7 driver for the ZEW2545 adapter but you may be able to pick up a certified 64-bit driver using Windows Update. The ZEW2545 adapter, according to Zonet, has the Ralink RT3070 chipset. This Ralinkdriver is available via Windows Update and should hopefully install for your adapter. What I would suggest is to unplug the ZEW2545 and then uninstall the drivers using "Uninstall a program".After restarting the computer plug the ZEW2545 adapter back in.The ZEW2545 should thenshow up as an "unknown device" in the Device Manager.Right-click this "unknown device" > Update Driver Software > Search automatically for updated driversoftware.Hopefully the Ralink driver will thenbe installed. Here's a link to the actual driver, if you want to download and have a look at (you will have to install the ActiveX control)- the larger sized file is the 64-bit version:http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Search.aspx?q=RT3070The netr28ux.sys driver in that package is a slightly older driver (May 2009) but is certified for Windows 7 and, as such, should work better.

I'm having a similar problem to mooleyjones. ZEW2545 on windows 7 64-bit. I started by installing the drivers that came on the CD. That didn't work, so I uninstalled and went with what windows update wanted to give me. That also didn't work, so I installed the drivers listed on this thread, and that didn't work either. My PC hangs / freezes while booting and shutting down if the wireless adapter is in the USB slot. If I remove the adapter, however, the PC will boot and shutdown just fine. The only difference is that it looks like mooleyjones's adapter works intermittently and gives a lot of BSODs. Mine has never worked on this machine and has only given me one BSOD.

Hi Jerome,The dump file you provided is pointing at hpdskflt.sys as the problem. That appears to be a part of the HP Mobile Data Protection software package. Here's a brief description of what that software does: http://h20271.www2.hp.com/SMB-AP/cache/329702-0-0-190-121.htmlYes, it is related to a power management event.Go to HP's website, then search for your exact model of PC. That may be the only BSOD you have received. From that minidump the process that crashed was the teco.exe. The teco.exe appears to be the Toshiba Eco Utiltity. Can you open the Action Center on the taskbar > Maintenance > View reliability history > View all problem reports Can you right-click on a few of the "Toshiba Service Station has stopped working"" "stopped working" errors > View technical details What are the details of the errors?

I have a question auggy, what software do you use to read those minidump files?

A handy application to read minidump files is BlueScreenView: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html However, you may find using WinDbg of the Debugging Tools for Windows gives you more complete information. You can download the Debugging Tools for Windows from the following link: http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtools/debugging/default.mspx There is a tutorial in the following link on setting up WinDbg, such as setting the symbol path and utilizing the !analyze -v command: http://www.sevenforums.com/crash-lockup-debug-how/26584-2-intermediate-configuring-debugging-tools.html Basically, install the Debugging Tools for Windows, open WinDbg, > File > Symbol File Path and then paste the following under "Symbol path": SRV*c:\symbols*http://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols then click "OK" Then close WinDbg and answer "Yes" to the "Save information for workspace" question. Now open WinDbg and drag a minidump file onto the WinDbg GUI or WinDbg > File > Open Crash Dump > then browse to and select a minidump file. To get more information on the crash, type the following at the kd> prompt, and press "Enter": !analyze -v To get a list of drivers loaded at the time of the crash run the lmtn command at th KD> prompt. BTW, I see from a thread on the Toshiba forum you have disabled the ToshibaServiceStation.exe from loading and that has been successful. If, at some point you want to "fix" the actual error you could try what is suggested in the following link: http://support.ornj.net/topic/windows-7-issue-immediate-crash The problem in that link is with a different application but just modify the steps to match the Toshiba Service Station application. To get to the user.config for the Toshiba application you will have to "show hidden files and folders": Start > Computer > Organize > Folder and Search options > View > then select "Show hidden files and folders" under "Files and folders" > OK

adamantium_skull, the minidump file showed a PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA and the driver which caused the crash was the EX64.SYS The EX64.SYS is a Norton driver. I would suggest to uninstall Norton and see if the BSODs resolve.

auggy, Thanks a lot for checking. (Sorry for not updating) It is most likely an HP driver problem. HP wasn't helpful. But I resolved the problem by reinstalling everything, a huge pain. The problem occurred after I ran Windows update. After some thought, I believed an HP driver was not compatible with some new Windows update. So I reinstall the factory image, turned off Windows update. It had since worked. lms2

I thought I would follow up on my own pb since I was able to fix it : it was a driver issue as expected. I own a HP pavilion DV7-2020ef (bought last year) running Windows 7 Ultimate then Enterprise, both x64. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?lc=fr&dlc=fr&cc=fr&sw_lang=&product=3949665&os=4063& (sorry if the page shows up in French) In the Device Manager : Others devices => I had a warning icon in front of an "Unknown device" When I opened it to check the details, some hints in there pointed towards ENE CIR Receiver so I downloaded and installed the ENE CIR Receiver Driver (Windows 7) off the page mentioned above (sp44994.exe) I since have had a "clean" device manager ant the BSOD are gone now ! Wooddoc, the minidump files show a DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (d1) and a MULTIPLE_IRP_COMPLETE_REQUESTS (44) Stop Error all being caused by the ser2at64.sys. The ser2at64.sys is a driver for ATEN USB Serial Adapter. This driver caused a similar problem in the following thread: http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7repair/thread/24d5c13a-d090-4533-97ba-219364a7197c#74809113-9155-43e2-90f0-583e178fd469 The ser2at64.sys installed on your system is dated Oct. 15, 2009 and therefore is the driver from Windows Update which may be buggy. In the other thread rolling back the driver to a 2007 version seemed to help. However, Aten appears to have now posted Windows 7 drivers (v1.0.074) if you wanted to give them a try http://www.aten.com/download/download.php?pid=2005022316346005&type=driver#showResult

Hi Andre.Ziegler, Thanks for your time and help. It seems that this BSOD is caused by the driver of my Silicon Image SATA card. But unfortunately, there is no updated driver on their website. Besides, about the memory test errors you said, does it mean that my physical memory have some defects? Or it means that there are some software data errors on my memory? Thanks!!

Hello guys... I'm having the same problem. My computer shuts down for no apparent reason. Not so often, but enough to annoy me. Most of the times I just notice when I get back to my computer after leaving it on over night or when at work, that it has "recovered from an unexpected shutdown" with similar details as the original post on the top here. But sometimes I catch the bluescreen, and it reads dxgkrnl.sys. Most of the times I've seen it happen is when I try to shut down. But it's not exclusive. (obviously since it restarts during night etc.) My computer has been somewhat a pain in the ass since I got it 1,5 year ago. Uptil now I have changed faulty memory, graphics card and now reasontly the harddrive. When I then installed a clean Win7 x64 on my brand new SSD I was confident that my troubles was gone, But straight after the fresh install this started happening. I imidiatly started supspecting my motherboard since it was almost the only part left of my original machine. But after searching the net I found that it might be graphics drivers or Direct X. I installed both the latest versions, but the problem persists, so I'm back at blameing the MB. Maybe you guys can help me conclude before I return it for warrenty reasons? I have zipped all my minidumps and uploaded with skydrive: http://cid-4ffc84a65382bd9e.office.live.com/self.aspx/Minidump/Minidump.zip Please help me out... This issue is driving me nuts. I've built a few machines myself over the years, but these days (although I don't usually buy OEM machines) I always prefer to pay someone else to do it for me, so he's responsible for hardware problems, not me. I downloaded memtest+ and ran tests on my ram so I do not think that is it... It happend this night as well. Are someone able to figure something out from the minidump files? Ken Blake: When you say overheating, does this mean it shuts down when overheated, or it shuts down becouse it has a defect caused by a previous overheating? I might have had some overheating problems previously, but have now installed a better fan and heatsink, and havent really used the computer that hard to overheat, and it always blue screens when ideling or planned shutdown. My PSU is a Corsair VX450W, powering the asus P7 P55 pro mother board, I7 860, ATI x5850 and a corsair 60gb SSD. Non of the components should be of the power hungry type, and allthough only 450W, the VX should deliver enough for this setup? The RAM has been changed already. I have previously had different problems, and returned MB, processor, and RAM (bought it all from same supplier). They then checked it, and found the RAM faulty. As for warreny, i'm very well covered by norwegian laws. (3 or maybe even 5 years even if manufacturer only has 1 year). As you say, the problem is troubleshooting. But I can always send it in, but risk paying for shipping and testing if they don't find anything wrong. Thats why I'd like to be confident before doing it. But can someone find anything from the minidump files? That would be great!

Please download memtest86+ [1], burn a new bootable CD (use a CD-RW if possible) from the ISO (download and use ImgBurn [2][3] to do this or make double click on the ISO in Windows 7), reboot your PC and scan your RAM 4-5hours for errors. If memtest86+ detects errors, test each module its own and replace the faulty RAM. If the memtest tells no error, please download CPU-Z [4], look in the memory and SPD tab and verify that the current RAM Speed and the Timings match to the values that you see in the SPD tab. If your RAM run at CR (Command Rate) 1T, change the value into 2T in the BIOS. This should fix the crashes. Thank you so much for a great answer Andre! indeed helpfull! you make it all sound so easy. :) However I'm not quite sure what to do after following your steps. Here is what I've done so far: I ran the memtest86+. It came out with no errors. You say I should scan for 4-5 hours. I'm not quite sure how long time the test took, but when I checked up with my computer after an hour and a half it was done. Shall I run the test over and over again to see if there is a different result? There is also a number of configurations to be made in the program. I suppose I am to leave them alone. So I downloaded the CPU-Z also. It looks ok for me at first glimpse, but I'm not quite sure what to look for, so I'll list the results here: Memory: Type: DDR3 Size: 4096 MB Channels #: Single NB Frequency: 2407,4 Mhz DRAM Frequency: 668,7 MHz FSB:DRAM: 2:10 CL: 9 tRCD: 9 tRP: 9 tRAS: 24 tRFC: 74 CR: 2T SPD: Memory slot Selection: DDR3, 2048 MB, PC3-10700H (667 MHz), Corsair, CMX4GX3M2A1600C9, SPD Ext.: XMP Timings table: JEDEC #1 JEDEC #2 JEDEC #3 XMP-1600 Frequency: 444 592 666 800 CL: 6 8 9 9 tRCD: 6 8 9 9 tRP: 6 8 9 9 tRAS: 16 22 24 24 tRC: 23 30 34 41 CR: - - - 2T Voltage: 1,5 1,5 1,5 1,65 I'm not quite sure what to make of it, but I see there is no 2T command rate at 666MHz. And should the tRFC of 74 match the tRC of 34? So is my RAM OK or not?

I don't get this. I have now run the memtest for over 20 hours. 26 passes, and 0 errors. I even run the memory at XMP 1600/800MHz mode. The first thing that happend when I rebooted from the test, is another bluescreen. I have uploaded the minidump if it can tell anything new: http://cid-4ffc84a65382bd9e.office.live.com/self.aspx/Minidump/031011-9843-01.dmp So now that my timings and CR are OK, and the memtest comes out fine, are my memory OK as well then? Could it be a MB issue like a memory controller not working proparly or something? (If that is possible????) I just don't understand. Please help!

So another blue screen just an hour or so after the other. I have problems with explorer freezing also no. And the gadgets "stopped working" also. I suspect my system to have become more unstable after upping the RAM to 800MHz. I'll keep the setting a while longer to see if it happens again. However , these two bluescreens didn't show dxgkrnl.sys, like i belive the previous ones have. Could you please check the two minidumps from today, to see if it still point towards memory problems? http://cid-4ffc84a65382bd9e.office.live.com/self.aspx/Minidump/031011-19999-01.dmp

The first number in the bugcheck params is the number of the trap (8 = double fault, etc) Arguments: Arg1: 0000000000000008, EXCEPTION_DOUBLE_FAULT 0x00000008, or Double Fault, indicates that an exception occurs during a call to the handler for a prior exception. Typically, the two exceptions are handled serially. However, there are several exceptions that cannot be handled serially, and in this situation the processor signals a double fault. There are two common causes of a double fault: * A kernel stack overflow. This overflow occurs when a guard page is hit, and the kernel tries to push a trap frame. Because there is no stack left, a stack overflow results, causing the double fault. * A hardware problem. The minidumps are not useful for UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP bug checks. Configure your Windows to create a kernel dump [1] and upload the zipped dump (C:\Windows\memory.dmp) to your SkyDrive [2] and post a link here. Have you made the BIOS Update? Hello again... Been quite tiered of this computer and busy the last months, but I still need to determine the cause of my crashes. After turning the ram back down, the computer turned back to the usual dxgkrnl bluescreens. When shuttting down, there now is about 80% chance that this will happen rather than powering down normally... However I have had at least 4 occasions where the computer have bluescreened during wathcing a movie or running a program. Could you please look at these dump files and see if they reveal anything? http://cid-4ffc84a65382bd9e.office.live.com/self.aspx/Minidump/non%20dxgkernl%20minidumps.zip In the meanwhile I will set up the kernel dump. Last time I had a problem (turned out to be the ram) I did a Bios update, that made everything alot worse. I had a very hard time managing to roll back the bios version, so I'm not very positive to trying that again. I will however if it is believed to help me this time. Considering all the problems I have had would you say it wouldn't be a bad guess blaming the MB? or could it be the CPU? or is it simply impossible to tell without swapping and testing? I appreciate the help. ALOT! -Stian

Hi DJrokr, Some of the minidump files point to the kilf.sys which is a Kaspersky driver. Try uninstalling Kaspersky and see if the blue screen errors resolve. Afterwards you could try reinstalling Kaspersky or go with other security software such as Microsoft Security Essentials. If problem persists consider starting a new topic on the problem for clarity and to get better help.

Hi Al Bob. Can you uprovide the following file?: C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP The memory.dmp is fairly large so you would have to compress and split the file into segments less than 300MB to upload to Windows Live SkyDrive using a third party application such as WinRAR, WinZip or 7-Zip. The memory.dmp file will contain more information on the crashes and may pinpoint the driver causing the issue. Also, is either ZoneAlarm or Check Point VPN software installed?
June 8th, 2012 11:31pm

BTW yes I using Check Point VPN. Is there the problem cause by Check Point VPN? CheckPoint VPN uses the vsdatant.sys driver which has a high probability of causing the crash.
