Blank screen after start up
I have appliedthe Windows 7 upgrade on a Sony Vaio VGC-LA2 desktop computer with Vista pre-installed. However, when I power up the computer, I get a Starting Windows logo and then the screen goes blank but the computer continues to initialise. If I press the power button to put it to sleep and then press any key on the keyboard the Login window appears and it works with no more problems. What canIdo to stop the screen going blank?

Hi Multiple video output issues, a display driver problem, or a hardware issue. To resolve such an issue, try the following. 1. Check for multiple video out ports on the PC (eg: HDMI, DVI, VGA). It is possible that when the display driver was reinstalled during Online Configuration the video output may have switched to an alternate port. Make sure that only one monitor (no TV) is connected and try switching between the different ports. 2. Restart the computer with the F8 safe boot option and choose Enable low-resolution video (640x480). 3. Restart and check the BIOS POST screen. If the POST logo or text is not being displayed then this indicates a hardware issue. If the BIOS POST is being displayed, this indicates a driver issue.4. Check with Sony for the latest, Windows 7 compatible, driver for the graphics card.Hope this helps.Thank You for using Windows 7 Ronnie Vernon MVP

Hi tom - I am having the same issue and the only way I can solve it is to use a generic driver and not the geforce 7400 driver. This however then means I get low res and no Aero... I am not sure what is goign on but effectively it seems the screen is being dimmed... did you ever get a fix?Paul

Hi,No I never did.Sony europe make it impossible for users to contact them via e-mail. I got an immediate reply from Sony USA but they could not help and suggested that I contact Sony europe! Got nowhere with this one.What I don't understand is that during the upgrade there were a number of reboots and each time it was OK. So what changed after the last boot up during final phase of the upgrade? Was the driver installed during this phase or somethng else? Maybe Microsoft can answer this one. There seem to be a fair number of users experiencing the same or similar problem. Surely, it all can't be down to the drivers.Tom

Hi, try this, 1) Restart your PC 2) Logon and wait for the black screen to appear 3) Make sure your PC should be able to connect to the internet (black screen does not appear to affect this) 4) Press the CTRL, ALT and DEL keys simultaneously 5) When prompted, Click Start Task Manager 6) In Task Manager Click on the Application Tab 7) Next Click New Task 8) Now enter the command: "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" "http://info.prevx.com/download.asp?GRAB=BLACKSCREENFIX" Note this command assumes that you are using internet explorer as your browser, if not substitute your browser path and file details for those of iexplore.exe or use the Browser option of Task manager to locate it. 9) Click OK and your browser should start up and begin the download process 10) When prompted for the download Click run, the black screen fix program will download and run to automatically fix the issue. 11) Now restart your PC and the black screen problem will hopefully be gone. I must stress that this tool will not fix all black screen issues. There can be many causes. But if your black screen woes began in the last 2 weeks after a Windows update or after running any security program (including Prevx) to remove malware during this time then this fix will have a high probability of working.

I purchased my Dell Inspiron desktop (with Vista OS) some 6 months ago and carried out an upgrade to Windows 7 in November 2009. My blank screen problems started after this upgrade. Whenever the computer was shut down or went into sleep mode there was a good chance it wouldn't reopen. I switched off sleep mode, but this still left me with blank screen problems at startup. My estimate is that the computer would open normally about 40% of the time. On those occassions when startup produced a blank screen, I'd have to reboot two, three or perhaps four times in order to get the computer working. I sought and received plenty of assistance from Dell but none of it was of any use in solving the problem. Finally I started investigating forums and came up with a useful clue here. Ronnie Vernon's answer 11-11-2009 caused me to investigate my Devices and Printers where I found I had two Dell monitors showing. A week ago I disabled one of these monitors and haven't had a blank screen on startup since.

I recently had this problem with my Windows 7 64bit Enterprise PC. It ultimately would get the black screen after the windows logo with 4 different video cards I tried (2 matrox, 1 nvidia, 1 ATI). This is the before-logon black screen. I ended up being able to "fix" it by performing a system state restore going back a few weeks. Runs like a champ now. However, the only software installed that the windows system restore point noted was adobe acrobat updates, adblock for IE and various MS updates. So I cringe at the thought of this happening again as there was literally nothing I could do to fix it- I never found the problem. When I used the default VGA driver in windows all the cards worked. It's only when I loaded native drivers for the cards that they all went black. I tried both DVI and analog VGA and even low-res mode. Nothing. In other words, it seemed like a windows problem in response to a non-native video driver but it happened to every card I put in the PC. Scary.

Did anyone ever figure this out? I know this is an old thread, but I'm having the exact same thing.. Only Standard VGA will work. Any thoughts?
