Black screen after login windows 7
windows 7 home premium 64 bit toshiba - After i login i get a black screen, and then all i can do is press ctrl alt delete, and brings up the menu, where you start task manager, or restart, etc. Although not like others, i when i start the task manager nothing happens. I think i know what caused this problem, before restarting my computer i was changing some files, i changed, explorer.exe, shell32.dll and i think the last one was windowsexplorerframe.dll. I made a copy of these before making any changes, on a folder on to my desktop. But i think that these changes have messed up the computer. Please help!!! my exams are next week and i need my computer for my revision work.

First try booting into the Safe Mode by repeatedly pressing the F8 key when first turning on the laptop and see if you can put the original files back where they belong. If that doesn't work the next thing is you need a Windows 7 installation DVD to boot the laptop from and make the selection to Repair the current installation. I have no idea what discs you have or came with your Toshiba, but most OEM system do not have installation DVDs and the "Repair" discs will wipe out any existing installeion. If all you have is the OEM discs you will need to contact Toshiba. I assume you are fully aware that these Windows 7 forums are not geared toward helping someone who has messed up their system by doing foolish things as you describe? These are not Technical Support forums.

thanks for the reply, i already tried safe mode, but it doesnt work. As for the CD, i have an original upgrade CD for windows 7, i guess i can boot from that, but it doesnt give me the the option to repair, it only gave me the option to do a clean wipe or upgrade again. Is there any way to recover my files before i do a clean install again. And also will my comoputer work, if i do a clean install from the upgrade cd? I was trying to fix an error for my windows, and i found the instructions on a website, i guess i shouldnt have followed them blindly.

The only way I know is to remove the hard drive from the laptop and connect it to your desktop. You can either plug it into an unsed SATA port and either a spare power plug or an appropriate adapter from the 4-pin power to SATA power. If you happen to have an external case that connects via USB you may use that.
